The AVO/AVA analysis is fundamentally El análisis AVO/AVA se basa

What is so interesting
about Class 2p ?
Within this classi cation, class 2 is
subdivided into 2p and 2n, depending
on the sign of the re ection
coe cient for normal incidence.
What makes the 2p response more
interesting is the change in polarity as
the angle of incidence becomes
larger, which translates into several
potential problems for the seismic
interpreter:
1- Normal incidence is positive but
stacking is possibly negative, which
would make any tie between a normal
incidence synthetic and a stacked
seismic section very di cult.

Que es tan interesante
de la Clase 2p ?
Dentro de esta clasi cación, la clase
2 se subdivide en 2p y 2n,,
dependiendo del signo del coe ciente
de re exión para incidencia normal.
Lo que hace más interesante a la
respuesta 2p es el cambio de
polaridad a manera que el ángulo de
incidencia se hace mayor, lo que se
traduce en varios posibles problemas
para el interprete sísmico:
1- Incidencia normal es positivo pero
el apilado posiblemente negativo, lo
que haría muy di cil cualquier amarre
entre un sintético de incidencia
normal con una sísmica apilada.

2- For the same reason, velocity
analysis for NMO correction  are
compromised. Remember that most
algorithms are based on semblance,
and this will be affected by the
change in polarity.
3- Being di cult to horizontalize, both
by semblance and by residual static
or amplitude picking techniques, the
values of the AVO curves, and the
extraction of AVA attributes, will be
quite inaccurate.
However, this same polarity change
provides very good information if
worked correctly. Partial angle
stacking, elastic inversion, and other
AVO attributes can provide important
details of changes in rock and uid
properties.

2- Por la misma razón, los análisis de
velocidades de correción NMO se ven
comprometidos. Recuerden que la
mayoría de los algoritmos se basan
en semblanza, y esta se vera
afectada por el cambio de polaridad.
3- Al ser di ciles de horizontalizar,
tanto por semblamza como por
técnicas de estáticas residuales o
picado de amplitudes, los valores de
las curvas AVO, y la extracción de
atributos AVA, seran bastante
inexactos.
Sin embargo, este mismo cambio de
polaridad proporciona muy buena
información si se trabaja
correctamente. Apilados parciales
por ángulos, inversión elástica y otros
atributoa AVO, pueden proveer
detalles importantes de cambios en
propiedades de roca y uidos.

The Birth of the AVO in
Venezuela and its Relation  Venezuela y su relación

I really wanted to talk about the AVA Class
2p response because of its relationship
with my personal experience, related to
the rst AVO work done in Venezuela.
It was around 1985 and people were
beginning to hear a lot about the works
related to AVO; Ostrander, Shuey,
Hilterman, etc... and I had just nished a
seismic characterization project for
onshore gas reservoirs in the Los Lanudos
eld, west of Maracaibo, using inversion
on stacked data.
Seismic anomalies at gas levels were
important, but the presence of coals made
the work somewhat di cult. However, a
very good job was done, based on good
correlations with wells.
After this, curiosity made me look for the
CMP gathers and... let's see if all that fuss
about AVO was true ???

Realmente quise hablar de las respuesta
AVA Clase 2p por su relación con mi
experiencia personal, relacionada con el
primer trabajo de AVO hecho en
Venezuela.
Era por allá por 1985 y se comenzaba a oir
hablar mucho de los trabajos relacionados
con AVO ; Ostrander, Shuey, Hilterman,
etc... y yo acababa de terminar un
proyecto de caracterización sísmica de
yacimientos de gas, en tierra, en el campo
Los Lanudos, al oeste de Maracaibo,
utilizando inversión sobre datos apilados.
Las anómalias sísmicas a niveles de gas
eran importantes, pero la presencia de
carbones di cultaba un poco el trabajo.
Sin embargo, se realizó un muy buen
trabajo, basado en buenas correlaciones
con pozos.
Luego de esto, la curiosidad hizo que
buscara los CMP gathers y... a ver si eso
de AVO era verdad ???

I am not going to make a new publication
of the results of this work, only make
references, at anecdotal levels, of some
observations that served as learning for
that young geophysicist.
Below you can see the Supergahter that
gave rise to the analysis. Of course, tied to
a well.
Clearly there were AVO effects... Yessss...
And they were different for coals, gas
sands, and water sands. That was enough

referencias, a niveles anecdóticos, de
algunas observaciones que sirvieron de
aprendizaje a ese joven geofísico.
Abajo pueden observar el Supergahter

Claramente existian efectos AVO...
Yessss... Y eran diferentes para los
carbones, las arenas gasiferas, y las
arenas con agua. Ya eso era su ciente
para ese primer análisis,

At that time no idea of classes... at least
me. Moreover, if you notice, the curves are
based on absolute values of the
amplitudes. For the curious, try to
generate the curves that would be
observed using the values with their
respective signs.
En aquel momento ni idea de clases... por
lo menos yo. Es más, si observan, las
curvas están en base a valores absolutos
de las amplitudes. Para los curiosos,
traten de generar Uds. las curvas que se
observarian utilizando los valores con sus
signos respectivos.

data is real, this is one of the best example
of a 2p anomaly that I have seen so far.

That work was done in 1986-1987 and I
did not play much with that data after the
original publications, so actually, I never
used the true effect of the polarity change
for any other study. It was going back to
the data for making this new publication,
and because of the sharp wisdom of
professor Backus that all that new
information came to life.
It did, however, help explain many of the
original problems we had, primarily when
trying to tie the wells to the stack data.
Of course, nothing that a good stretch-
squeeze can resolve... jeje
Well, I hope that with this simple anecdotic
article you can see the importance of
identifying the type  of interesting AVA 2p
response, and learn a little about it.

Ese trabajo se realizó entre 1986-1987 y
no jugué mucho con esos datos después
de las publicaciones originales, por lo que
en realidad nunca usé el verdadero efecto
del cambio de polaridad para ningún otro
estudio. Fue volviendo a los datos para
hacer esta nueva publicación, y gracias a
la aguda sabiduría del profesor Backus,
que toda esa nueva información cobró
vida.
Sin embargo, ayudó a explicar muchos de
los problemas originales que tuvimos,
principalmente cuando intentamos
amarrar los pozos con los datos  apilados.
Pero por supuesto, nada que un buen
estiamiento no pueda resolve... jeje
Bueno, espero que con este sencillo
artículo anecdótico puedas ver la
importancia de identi car el tipo de
respuesta AVA 2p, y aprender un poco al
respecto.
