1. Translate the following sentences into the other language, always being mindful of the contexts in
which the sentences might occur. Use either preterite or imperfect for the Spanish and their
equivalents for the English (Hill y Bradford 1991):
1. I was waiting for you until they closed the building.

2. Según su costumbre, apenas salía de casa.

3. We weren’t watching the road when a truck crossed in front of us.

4. Unos comían mientras otros esperaban para comer.

5. It never snowed, but it was always very cold.

6. Cantaba antes en ese club nocturno.

7. I never knew (found out) her name.

8. La joven quería comprar la cadena, pero no lo hizo porque costaba mucho.

9. My brother knew them well; he met them in Bogota.

10. Guillermo tenía náuseas y no quiso comer nada.

2. Translate the following sentences into the other language and account for the mood differences you
find between them (adapted from Hill & Bradford 1991)
1. Nos aconsejaron que no descendiéramos del monte.

2. They forbid us to speak Spanish to the children.

3. El general mandó que los soldados atacaran de inmediato.

4. We suggest that they write a letter to the President.

5. Dudo que tengan tiempo para hacerlo.

6. He denied that his children had stolen the money.

3. Translate the following sentences into the other language. If it is a Spanish sentence, use a modal verb
in your translation and if the sentence is written in English, state the use of the modal verb it contains
(adapted from Hill & Bradford 1991)

1. Could you read at that time?

2. Ese señor debe ser un arquitecto famoso.

3. Eagles can fly at 80km per hour.

4. Give an English passive as equivalent to the following fronting constructions in Spanish . (M&M).

1. A su hermano le han regalado un telescopio por su cumpleaños.

Your brother has been given a telescope for his birthday.

2. Este bonito jarrón lo compró María en Indonesia.

This beautiful vase was bought by Maria in Indonesia.

3. Este trabajo lo ha escrito uno de mis estudiantes.

This paper was written by one of my students.

4. El cuadro lo encontraron en el interior de un armario.

The painting was found inside a cupboard.

5. Put into the passive. Then translate into Spanish

1. Someone has referred to my dissertation in an academic article.

My dissertation has been referred to by someone in an academic article.  Alguien ha hecho referencia a mi

tesis en un artículo académico.

2. The police will have arrested the hijackers.

The hijackers will have been arrested by the police.  Los secuestradores habrán sido detenidos por la policía.

3. An old aunt of mine gave me a gold ring.

I was given a gold ring by an old aunt of mine.  Una vieja tía mía me regaló un anillo de oro.

4. Someone wounded me in the trenches.

I was wounded in the trenches.  Me hirieron en las trincheras.

5. Someone has seen you climbing into the neighbour’s garden.

I have been seen climbing into the neighbour’s garden.  Me han visto trepar por el jardín del vecino.

6. Can you rely on him?

Can he be relied?  ¿Se puede confiar en él?

7. We are attending to the matter.

The matter is being attended to by us.  Nos estamos ocupando del asunto.

8. They offered me a reward for finding their cat.

I was offered a reward for finding their cat..  Me ofrecieron una recompensa por encontrar a su gato.

9. They had informed us that the train would be late.

We had been informed that the train would be late.  Nos habían informado de que el tren llegaría tarde.

10. We have asked you repeatedly to contact our office.

You have been asked repeatedly to contact our office by us.  Le hemos pedido repetidamente que se ponga en

contacto con nuestra oficina.
