TURISMOFOBIA

DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE TOURISMPHOBIA?
For a long time, tourism has been one of the activities that contributes most to the world
economy. Many people are motivated to visit different countries, either for pleasure or for business.
However, many people do not perform this activity in the best way and for this reason we can find
new concepts such as overtourism or tourismphobia.
What is it tourismphobia?
Tourismphobia is the fear or social rejection that local citizens feel against tourists. This
phenomenon has begun to increase in many places around the world and it is given by the result of
bad planning of tourist destinations and is reflected in the large number of tourists that arrive at the
cities, who generate more problems than solutions. This notion, appears when the carrying capacity
of a destination is affected, that means, when a physical space arrives tourists in excess and the
environment begins to deteriorate, so local people feel uncomfortable.
A tourist destination goes through five stages which are euphoria, apathy, annoyance,
antagonism and surrender by the effect of tourism. At the beginning, tourists are welcome in the
destination because they represent a novelty (euphoria) and a positive change for the city, until they
become so common that there is apathy or indifference towards them, becoming and annoyance.
The two last ones stages (antagonism and surrender) are part of the tourismphobia, here is
when local people begin to experiment a rejection towards the excess of visitors and it could end in
surrender where the only solution is accepted the transformation of the environment.
The main tourist destinations with tourismphobia are: Barcelona (Spain), Venice (Italy),
Santorini (Greece), Amsterdam (Netherlands), by factors such as:
- It breaks with the daily life of citizens
- Increase in rental prices
- Increase in living costs
- You cannot travel calmly and quietly through tourist places
- Degradation of the ecosystem and natural areas
- Destruction of flora and fauna
- Excessive noise
- Traffic
- Environmental pollution
In conclusion, although tourism, in many cases, has great positive impacts on destinations such as:
generation of employment, great contribution to the economy of the place, potential to attract
investment, etc. Tourists do not understand or respect the norms and cultures of the different
destinations and this is what causes rejection by local people; In addition to the large masses that for
lack of control deteriorate the great attractions.
