First Conditional

We use the first conditional in English to talk about situations that will occur if a particular condition occurs. This
condition is not safe, but it is very likely. In other words, we use the first conditional to talk about things that we think are
likely to happen in the future.

We use the auxiliary “will” and the conditional “If”. (Look the examples below). When we write first with “if” the
sentences, it is in present separated by a comma (,) like be the CONDITION then the sentence is going to “will” that
express the future or CONSEQUENCE.

If + personal pronoun + action verb (present) + complement (,) personal pronoun + will + action verb (present) +
complement. Example:

If you hit me, I’ll tell my big brother. (Si tú me pegas, yo le diré a mi hermano mayor)

Or

Personal pronoun + will + action verb (present) + complement If + personal pronoun + action verb (present) +
complement. Example:

I’ll tell my big brother If you hit me (yo le dire a mi hermano mayor si tu me pegas)

Remember that “will” work with all personal pronouns:

PERSONAL PRONOUNS + WILL CONTRACTION NEGATION

I will I’ll I will not/ won’t
You will You’ll You will not/ won’t
He will He’ll He will not/ won’t
She will She’ll She will not/ won’t
It will It’ll It will not/ won’t
You will You’ll You will not/ won’t
We will We’ll We will not/ won’t
They will They’ll They will not/ won’t

We use the first conditional in these situations:

a. To express a possible situation and its consequences:

What will they do if they win the game?

If they win the game, they’ll have a party.
They’ll be very sad if they don’t win.
If they don’t win the game, they won’t finish in first place.

b. to warm or to threaten

If you arrive late, we’ll leave without you.
