The pavilion is created by a field of 8m high brushed stainless-steel rods supporting a thin-plate canopy. Pathways are
defined within the pavilion by removing clusters of the structure, creating a generous seating area—an arrangement
which defines public space without enclosing it. The pathways reveal various densities of vertical rods, which shimmer
in sunlight by day and reflect intense projected light by night, generating a visual moiré effect for passers-by. At night
the visual transparency of the structure is reinforced by up-lighting the clusters of rods so that the pavilion appears to

bombings, we designed a permanent memorial to commemorate the worst terrorist
attacks in peacetime London.
Located in Hyde Park, the memorial’s setting on a new park path provides a place
for quiet contemplation within one of the largest public places in London. The
singular and collective loss inflicted by the bombings has informed the character
of the memorial. Fifty-two 850 kg stainless steel cast vertical pillars (or stelae),
each representing one of the 52 lives lost, are arranged in an open pattern of
four interlinked clusters representing the four locations of the bombs.

LONDRES, REINO UNIDO
During the summer of 2010, Studio East Dining was built on top of a 35m high
multi-storey car park within the live construction site of a major new commercial
mixed development in Stratford, East London.
The temporary pavilion provided a unique elevated vantage point across London's
2012 Olympic site. A cluster of interlocking timber-lined rooms sheltered by angled
translucent roofs, formed a large, singular restaurant space, allowing up to 140
guests to enjoy an intimate dining experience at communal tables whose orientation
were aligned to key views of London’s emerging skyline.
Sección longitudinal a través del comedor / Longitudinal section through dining room
The project was designed and built within ten weeks from initial briefing to opening night. With a life-span
of only three weeks, the 800m2 lightweight structure was constructed with materials borrowed from the
existing construction site including scaffolding boards, scaffolding poles and an industrial grade heat
retractable polyethylene roof membrane. All building materials were selected for their ability to be 100%
recycled following the closure of the restaurant.

Frieze Art Fair Pavilions
Each autumn Frieze Art Fair shows works by more than 1,000 artists represented
by contemporary British and international galleries. The Fair is hosted within a
20,000 m² temporary venue built from tent structures within the remarkable context
of Regent’s Park, London. Frieze Art Fair promotes living artists and hosts a
curated programme of talks, commissioned art installations and film projects,
many of which are interactive and performance-based, thereby encouraging
visitors to engage with art and artists directly during the four-day fair.
Over three consecutive years, Carmody Groarke developed a concept for Frieze
that balanced the quality of the art space, the social experience and the park
context. The architectural idea was to construct a series of interlinked, translucent
pavilions surrounding the perimeter of the large exhibition tents.

The pavilions, located adjacent to the exhibition spaces, were constructed as
timber-lined 'rooms' arranged around the existing trees within the park and con-
tained the public hospitality and VIP functions. The palette of materials was rudi-
mentary in character, with proprietary timber flitch beams and raw plywood sheath-
ing for walls and roofs, covered externally with polycarbonate.
The project included the master plan of the gallery layout. Approached as an
urban strategy of avenues, streets and squares, the arrangement aimed to give
legibility to public circulation within the large-scale tents and created a series of
architectural installations which orientated the visitor and provided opportunities
for rest and refreshment. Feria de Arte Frieze. Planta / Frieze Art Fair. Floor plan

Waddesdon Manor was built in 1874 as a French Renaissance-style chateau by Baron Ferdinand
de Rothschild to entertain and house his collection of fine art. The Manor sits within the grounds
of Waddesdon Estate, a vast, man-made park landscape, punctuated by several ornamental archi-
tectural structures used for cultural attractions. Waddesdon Manor Estate constitutes one of the
most popular stately home visitor attractions in the United Kingdom.
The purpose of the new pavilion is to manage the enormous volume of visitors arriving at the
Waddesdon Estate by car and to offer welcome, orientation and transport connections to the Manor
and around the park. The pavilion’s architectural identity is confirmed by a large, elemental steel
canopy, generated from its primary purpose of providing shelter within the park landscape.

Paddington Hotel [Gateway Building]
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM. 2015-
Diagrama de fachada. Alzados. Maquetas de estudio / Façade diagram. Elevations. Study models
The site of this new twenty-five-storey tower in Paddington is remarkable in both its infrastructural history and physical constraints. Developments of road, rail and canal waterways intersect
the area and have defined the borders of a large commercial estate. Marking the entrance to this estate, removal of a small derelict pavilion building, originally built in the 1980s, has
created a small gap site with highly unusual geometry and topography. The opportunity of the site is to shape the identity of this evolving and highly visible arrival to this part of London
(by road and rail), create a social culture, and add to the significant ongoing public realm improvements.
A 200-bed hotel occupies the articulated tower form, balancing on a substantial base of subterranean levels containing foyer, restaurant and events spaces. A restaurant crowns the
top of the building. The hotel not only brings a complementary vitality to the place throughout night-and-day, but it provides a much stronger urban connection between estate buildings,
public spaces and the vast expanse of the adjacent railway. The tower’s form negotiates a precariously small and angular site footprint, and steps vertically to acknowledge the very
different urban conditions it faces, creating a dialogue with the physical and historical context at various scales.
A consistent architectural treatment has been applied to all elevations to consolidate the presence of a landmark seen from all points of view. A subtle graduation of window proportions,
from smaller and horizontal for lower level rooms, to larger and taller for penthouses and social levels, conspire to reinforce the vertical proportions of the tower.

Casa en Highgate
The original commission was to replace an existing large, detached Edwardian
house with a new family home. The old house was suffering from a long-term
lack of repair and reflected a pattern of living that was far more relevant to life
more than a century ago. Benign in character and quality, it blended into the
typical set-piece of the suburban streetscape, and architecture that appeared
different to its surrounding status-quo was always going to be treated with suspicion
by the neighbourhood.
The resultant new detached family house creates a strong relationship between its
context, its external form and the composition of its internal spaces. A clear language
of public and private is defined spatially and by the elevations of the house.
Alzado Oeste a la calle / Street elevation, West
The treatment of thresholds between interior and exterior space varies greatly in
scale and proportion from front to rear, according to each room’s physical and
visual connection to the street, the gardens and Highgate Wood beyond.
The front elevation is divided into three tightly-packed, angled gables of varying
heights, a proportional device to reference the surrounding vernacular architecture,
and completing a geometrical scale-step between the building lines of adjacent
houses. The rear elevation contrasts in character with more generously proportioned
windows and terraces linking inside and outside.

Museo Temporal para la Hill House de Charles Rennie Mackintosh
Temporary Museum for Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Hill House
HELENSBURGH, UNITED KINGDOM. 2016-
COMPETITION FIRST PRIZE
The house proposed a radical layout and three-dimensional spatial progression, and although
the architecture was embedded in the picturesque tradition of Scottish Baronial, Mackintosh
was also clearly influenced by the contemporary technological advances of Modernism hap-
pening elsewhere in Europe. This unusual hybridisation of tradition and invention in the con-
struction of the building has led to some fundamental long-term problems of prolonged water
damage that require a major conservation project to help the house survive.
Rather than incarcerate the house away from view whilst the restoration is undertaken, a
more radical approach to active conservation has been taken. As an integral part of this
process of conservation, which it is thought will take up to 15 years, the project proposes
a ‘big-box’ temporary museum to contain and protect the Hill House as an ‘artefact’, whilst

Suite del Hotel Burgh Island
Burgh Island Pool House
DEVON, UNITED KINGDOM. 2016-
COMPETITION FIRST PRIZE
Emplazamiento / Location

The Pool House is conceived as an inhabited bridge, consolidating the sculptural profile of the eroded mud-stone sea-cliffs.

Studio in a Ruin and Lake Pavilion
An existing rural family farmhouse has been extended to provide additional spaces for residential
retreat and creative work. The scale and composition of the existing main house could not sustain
any further adaptations, and so two pavilions were created as distinct and separate buildings
within the landscape.
The first pavilion is designed as a 'hermitage'— self-sufficient guest suite containing a bedroom,
bathroom and a small kitchenIt is conceived as a singular, square, oak-lined room given orientation
by a single large window overlooking a beautiful man-made lake and small island. Externally, the
pavilion is made from horizontally board-marked, in-situ concrete and is embedded into the
steeply sloped banks of the lake, giving it an archaic, almost geological character. The suite is
only accessible from the existing main house, via a 3m diameter, 40m-long, galvanised-steel
underground tunnel. An oak jetty is suspended over the lake as an extension of this very special
and secluded experience.

The second pavilion is intended to be of very different architectural character and used for an artist’s studio to make sculpture.
It uses a dilapidated eighteenth century farm building that was all-but destroyed, apart from a few parts of its existing perimeter
brick walls. Rather than demolish its last remains, it was felt that the unselfconscious character and handmade quality to the
existing brickwork structure would be the correct starting point to create a space for making art. The form of the old house was
reconstructed, making the distinction of old and new very clear, but appearing coherent as a completed whole
Existing brickwork has been retained and the figure of the original walls has been completed inside-and-out in polished in situ
concrete. A new plate-steel roof with a very elemental expression to the large studio hall inside balances on the repaired structure

A new private house and workshop-studio occupies an unusually large backland plot of land in South London. The site
was originally occupied by industrial warehouses dating back to early Victorian times, and is landlocked on all sides by
a dense grain of two and three-storey nineteenth-century terraced houses. There are only two entrances to the site.
The pitched-roofs of the original buildings have been removed leaving only the perimeter brick walls as existing fabric.
Within this boundary, a new sectional treatment of the site has allowed a large lateral single-storey house to be built
above the retained working space. A small new build town house will complete the gap plot at the front gate.
The new house is only partially visible above the parapet wall from the neighbours as a composition of flat-roofed brick
forms of various heights.

Existing brickwork is left in its found condition and the new building is also expressed as brick but rubbed all over with white mortar to give
the forms a sculptural solidity. Spaces in between the new and old walls create small, intensively planted roof gardens which will eventually
conceal the new house from the neighbours with nature and gradually evolve the composition of old and new.

For the past two decades, an existing nineteenth-century warehouse in London's industrial East End has been used as
studios for the internationally renowned artist Julian Opie. As part of a terrace of warehouses built for furniture making,
the old building is typified internally by tall proportions of open plan space, and externally by a strong contrast in the front
and rear elevations. Depot doors and simple ornamentation reflect the prosperity to the main street, whilst the rear is an
ad-hoc composition of two-storey outbuildings along one of the narrowest back alleys in London.
With the artist requiring more space to work (painting, sculpture and photography) and an increase in privacy from a new
hotel development emerging immediately to the rear of the existing building, the project extensively renovates the existing
studios at the front and adds new working space at the rear.
Basic elements of the existing building have been improved: circulation, lighting and heating, but the unselfconscious
character of the 'found space' remains conducive for making creative work.

The space dedicated for the new Members' Room will convert a top-floor, top-lit gallery
space in Aston Webb's Grade I Listed 1909 wing of the Victoria & Albert Museum. The
existing gallery is both magnificent in character and vast in scale and will enable the
V&A to host several hundred Members for hospitality events and refreshments.
Architecturally, the creative adaptation of the original gallery is seen as part of the natural
continuum of the Museum fabric. As such, new designs have subtly restored and
retained existing spatial or detail character and where appropriate reinvented architectural
features including lighting and furniture.

Espacio de Arte de Park Hill en Sheffield
Park Hill Art Space, Sheffield
UNITED KINGDOM. 2017-
COMPETITION FIRST PRIZE
Plano de situación y edificio original (1961) / Site plan and original building (1961)
Park Hill was built between 1957 and 1961 as one of the largest council
owned housing estates in the UK. The estate was originally designed
with 955 apartments planned in several angular slab blocks on a steeply
sloped landscaped site, linked laterally by their iconic "streets in the
sky". It was a visionary concept for post war reconstruction of one of
the historically poorest neighbourhoods in Sheffield. Following the city's
pronounced economic decline in the 1980s following mass closure of
coal, steel and manufacturing industries, the estate suffered from
chronic underinvestment and was eventually fully vacated by the mid
1990s. Notwithstanding the ensuing decay, Park Hill was given Grade
2 Listed status and remains the largest heritage listed structure in
Europe. Renovation of the original buildings has begun as part of a
masterplan for a mixed tenure of public and private housing. The third
phase of this redevelopment will be dedicated to cultural use for a
