PRESENT PROGRESSIVE.

Ejemplos:

I’m studying now.(Estoy estudiando ahora.)

He’s eating at the moment.(Está comiendo en este momento.)

Is it raining?(¿Está lloviendo?)

tiempo como “currently”, “lately” o “these days”.

Ejemplos:

They’re learning English.(Están aprendiendo inglés.)

She’s currently looking for a job.(Actualmente está buscando un trabajo.)

Are you working much lately?(¿Estás trabajando mucho últimamente?)

Ejemplos:
I’m going to the party tonight.(Voy a la fiesta esta noche.)

He’s not [He isn’t] coming to class tomorrow.(No viene a la clase manaña.)

Are you working next week?(¿Trabajas la semana que viene?)

be (ser/estar), want (querer), need (necesitar),
know (saber/conocer), prefer (preferir), remember (recordar),
understand (comprender), care (cuidar), see (ver), hear (oír), smell (oler), believe (creer
), belong (pertenecer),
cost (costar), seem (parecer), exist (existir), own (poseer),
like (gustar), dislike (desagradar), love (amar), hate (odiar),
fear (temer), envy (envidiar), mind (importar)…

Ejemplos:

 David needs a new car. (David necesita un coche nuevo.)

X David is needing a new car.

Forming the Present Participle

A present participle is formed like this:

Add "ing" to most verbs: Consonant, vowel+y, vowel Consonat+y.

 play > playing working doing agreeing studying

 shout > shouting eating being skiing crying

For verbs that end "e," remove the "e" and add "ing":

 prepare > preparing use > using

 ride > riding Complete > completing

For verbs that end "ie," change the "ie" to "y" and add "ing":

 lie > lying die > dying

 untie > untying

For verbs whose last syllable is written [consonant-vowel-consonant] and is stressed,

double the final consonant and add "ing":

 run > running stopping opening

 forget > forgetting swimming

Afirmativa

Sujeto + (am | is | are) + verbo+ing +complement (time expression)

ejemplos:

I am learning English. I’m learning English.

You are learning German. You’re learning German.

She is learning Spanish at this

She’s learning Spanish.
moment.

She’s cooking tonight.

She is cooking tonight.

Negativa

Sujeto + (am not | isn't | aren't) + verbo acabado en -ing

I am not learning English now. I’m not learning English.

We are not learning German at this We aren't learning German. | We're

moment. not learning German.

He is not speaking Spanish right He isn't speaking Spanish | He’s not

now. speaking Spanish.
Interrogativa

(Am | Is | Are) + sujeto + verbo+ing + complement + ?

verbo to be. ¡Ah! Y aquí nada de contraer. Para contestar con short answers (respuestas
cortas), solo tienes que poner el verbo to be en afirmativa o en negativa, detrás del
sujeto. Fíjate en los ejemplos.

Am I eating hamburger? Yes, you are.

Are they calling their boss? No, they aren't.

Is it working? Yes, it is.

La práctica

Empecemos practicando con la afirmativa. Antes, unas notas sobre pronunciación:

 Junta los labios al decir la m de I’m, /áim/

 Pronuncia bien la s de he’s, /hhhiis/ y she’s, /shhhiis/

 You’re, we’re y they’re suenan así: /ióo/, /uía/ y /dzéa/

Estoy mirando el reloj de pared. I’m looking at the clock.

Te estoy mirando. I’m looking at you.

Estoy hablando con ellos. I’m talking to them.

Estoy escuchando la radio. I’m listening to the radio.

Ella está hablando con él. She’s talking to him.

Él está escuchando las noticias. He’s listening to the news.

Me estás leyendo un libro. You’re reading a book to me.

Están soñando con la Navidad. They’re dreaming about Christmas.

Estamos escribiendo al periódico. We’re writing to the newspaper.

No estoy mirando a Laura. I'm not looking at Laura.

No estoy cantando. I’m not singing.

No estoy comiendo chocolate. I’m not eating chocolate.

No estoy viendo la tele. I’m not watching TV.

She’s not dating him. | She isn't dating

Ella no está saliendo con él.
him.

He’s not listening to the news. | He isn't

Él no está escuchando música.
listening to the news.

You’re not reading a poem. | You aren't

No estás leyendo un poema.
reading a poem.

They’re not doing their homework. |

No están haciendo los deberes.
They're doing their homework.

We’re not drinking beer. | We aren't

No estamos bebiendo cerveza.
driniking beer.

interrogativas what (qué), where (dónde), how (cómo), etc. ¡A practicar!

¿Qué estás haciendo ahora mismo? What are you doing right now?

¿De qué estoy hablando? What am I talking about?

¿Dónde está él trabajando ahora

Where’s he working right now?
mismo?

¿Cómo está gestionándolo ella? How is she dealing with it?

¿Qué estamos aprendiendo? What are we learning?

¿Adónde estáis yendo? Where are you going?

¿Cómo están haciéndolo ellos? How're they doing it?

¿Para qué hace ese ruido? What’s it making that noise for?

¿Para qué parpadea? What’s it flashing for?
