4. MARKET INSIGHTS

4.1 KEY MARKET TRENDS AND INSIGHTS ON THE GLASS BOTTLES

INDUSTRY IN LATIN AMERICA
◼ Glass has emerged as one of the prominent constituents in the packaging industry, it made noteworthy
inroads over the past few years and influenced the growth of the glass bottles and containers market.
◼ Glass bottles and containers are majorly used in the alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage industry due to
their ability to maintain chemical inertness, sterility, and non-permeability.
◼ Alcoholic drinks are prominent adopters of glass packaging, as glass does not react with the chemicals
present in drinks. Therefore, it preserves these beverages' aroma, strength, and flavor, making it a favorable
option for packaging. Due to this reason, a majority of the beer volume is transported in glass bottles, and
this trend is predicted to continue during the study period.
◼ Glass packaging is 100% recyclable, making it a desirable packaging option from the environmental point
of view. 6 ton of recycled glass directly save 6 ton of resources and reduce the emission of CO2 by 1 ton.
◼ A recent innovation, such as lightweight and effective recycling, is driving the market. Newer production
methods and the recycling effect make it possible to develop more, particularly thin-walled and lightweight
glass bottles and containers. Also, the development of the narrow neck press and blow process has allowed
for a significant reduction in the weight of glass bottles in the region.
◼ Increasing demand from the beverage industry is driving the market. Alcohol consumption is particularly
high in the Latin American region and Caribbean countries and territories (LAC). According to a study from
the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Health Observatory, the region's consumption of 6.5 liters
of pure alcohol annually per capita makes it the third-highest region globally, after Europe at 10.1 and
North America at 9.9 liters.
◼ However, some countries within the region, like Grenada and Saint Lucia, are higher at 9.5 and 10.6,
respectively (WHO, 2020]. Total adult per capita consumption in Central and South America has increased
over the past 40 years. In a country such as Brazil, which ranks among the largest beer producers globally,
consumption has almost tripled since the 1960s. Such trends have driven the demand for glass bottles in
the region.
◼ Also, in Brazil, the consumption of alcohol between inhabitants is considerably high. Growing consumption
of non-alcoholic beverages, like milk and juices, is further expected to create a scope for the region's glass
bottles and containers market. According to Argentina’s Secretary of Integral Policy on Drugs, the region
consumes the most alcohol per capita of any country.

4. MARKET INSIGHTS

4.1 KEY MARKET TRENDS AND INSIGHTS ON THE GLASS

BOTTLES INDUSTRY IN LATIN AMERICA
◼ Green packaging is a fast-growing trend in the beauty industry currently and is being increasingly driven
by an eco-conscious consumer looking for products that have a minimal impact on the environment.
Natura launched the first packaging for perfumery made with post-consumer recycled glass. The
incorporation of recycled glass in the packaging of perfumes reduces CO2 emissions by 357 ton/year. The
trend of sustainability across the packaging domain is gaining traction across the cosmetics and
perfumery domain in the region.
◼ Many other vendors in the Latin American region are accelerating their sustainability efforts. Cristalerías
Toro, a Chilean and family-owned company with more than 60 years of expertise in the production and
commercialization of glass containers, has been in charge of transmitting from generation to generation
the commitment to its Customers, the Environment, and the Community.
◼ The company has completed successful projects in different segments of the Food and Beverages industry
(Wines, Sparkling wines, Liquors, Beers, Soft drinks, Waters, Juices, Oils, etc.), Cosmetics, Pharmaceutical
and Household. Cristalerias Toro signed USD 40 million loans tied to sustainable metrics in July 2020.
◼ Recently Cristalerías Toro announced that its plant would use 100% renewable energy from Statkraft. Both
the companies have signed a long-term clean electricity supply contract, which would allow the modern
industrial plant for the manufacture of glass to come to life with high standards of technology and care
for the environment.
◼ For Cristalerias Toro, this project would put them at the forefront of technology for the manufacture of
glass containers and is part of its policy of producing high-quality products in an environmentally friendly
way. That is why a high percentage of recycled glass is used in the manufacture of containers, and this
collaboration with Statkraft allows them to provide all its customers a much more sustainable container.
◼ Many packaging companies, mostly based out of the Americas or Europe, have established their business
in the Central America regions through acquisitions. For instance, Owens-Illinois acquired around 50%
interest in glass containers maker Empresas Comegua. Empresas Comegua produces glass containers for
the Central American and Caribbean markets through its two glass manufacturing plants in Guatemala
and Costa Rica.

4. MARKET INSIGHTS

4.1KEY MARKET TRENDS AND

INSIGHTS ON THE GLASS BOTTLES
INDUSTRY IN LATIN AMERICA
◼ In the Central America region, interactions in the digital environment
associated with fragrances and perfumes, and products to prevent hair loss,
skincare, and nails, have rebounded. Hence, growing interest among
consumers for cosmetic and personal care products would create scope for the
market in the region.
◼ Costa Rica is one of the most attractive pharmaceutical markets in the Central
America region. Although regulatory and patent enforcement concerns remain,
steps are also being taken to address such shortfalls.
◼ The country's business environment is friendly, with direct foreign investment a
vital part of the country's economy. The country’s healthcare system is strong,
and it makes a concerted effort to keep pace with technological advancements
to aid public health. The country’s rapidly aging population and growing
reputation as a medical tourism hotspot would indicate an increase in
medicine demand going forward.
◼ Costa Rica is an important near-shore production hub and for many
multinational pharmaceutical companies, like Abbott, AstraZeneca, Roche,
Bayer, GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer, Merck, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Aspen.
◼ High competition from substitute products is restraining the market. Changes
in consumer trends toward convenient and comfortable handling solutions are
anticipated to drive the demand for flexible solutions. Incremental
enhancements in plastic packaging solutions are posing a threat to the glass
packaging market.

4.2 COVERAGE ON THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE

GLASS BOTTLES INDUSTRY IN LATIN AND CENTRAL
AMERICA REGION
◼ One of the significant advantages of glass packaging application in the pharmaceutical industry is its
inert nature (i.e., it does not react with the contents inside). Glass has near-zero affinity toward
chemicals, which makes it apt for storing drugs, where it is imperative to maintain the exact composition
and quantities of different chemicals. Amber color glasses are among the preferred containers. Injection
vials and ampoules are other segments that are preferred in glass packaging.
◼ It is expected that glass vials demand would surge for COVID-19 vaccines. Many companies across the
world have ramped up vials manufacturing to meet any surge in demand for glass vials from the
pharmaceutical industry worldwide. COVID-19 distribution would require packaging, which requires
strong vials that protect their contents and won’t chemically react with the vaccine solution. For decades,
drugmakers have depended on vials made up of borosilicate glass, though containers crafted from
newer materials are also entering the market.
◼ Many COVID-19 vaccine deals have been announced recently in Latin America and Central America
region. For instance, In December 2020, Costa Rica signed an agreement with pharmaceutical companies
Pfizer Inc and its German partner BioNTech SE for the manufacture and delivery of 3 million COVID-19
vaccines next year, according to the office of President Carlos Alvarado.
◼ The deal would allow Costa Rica to offer two doses to 1.5 million people and follows accords with
AstraZeneca and the Covax mechanism backed by the World Health Organization (WHO). In total, the
agreements should cover about 3 million people or almost 60% of the Costa Rican population.
◼ In November 2020, Panama’s government announced that that it had signed an agreement with drug
companies Pfizer and BioNTech to purchase 3 million COVID-19 vaccine doses. The vaccine would be
distributed during 2021, pending clinical success and local regulatory approval.
◼ Also, Mexico signed an agreement with Pfizer to buy 34.4 million vaccines against the coronavirus, with a
first batch due to arrive in December 2020. The country has also announced a partnership with Britain's
AstraZeneca and China's CanSino Biologics to buy their vaccines, which are undergoing trials. Hence,
such partnerships would drive the market’s growth positively over the forecast period.

◼ According to the IQVIA, the pharmaceutical industry in Latin America is expected to grow from USD 55
billion in 2018 to USD 76 billion in 2023, with a CAGR of 7%. In September 2020, Luye Pharma Group
announced two collaborations with partners in the region, further boosting the development of the
central nervous system (CNS) drugs Seroquel (quetiapine fumarate, immediate release, IR) and Seroquel
XR (extended-release formulation) in the local markets. Seroquel and Seroquel XR are atypical
antipsychotic (AAP) medicines with antidepressant properties.
◼ Latin America is regarded as the high-potential emerging market in the region’s global strategy for CNS
business development. Owing to Alter-Pharma's extensive operational experience in Central America, the
Caribbean, and other regions.
◼ Luye Pharma believes this partnership would greatly improve the depth and breadth of Seroquel's
market coverage in the related countries and regions. Meanwhile, the packaging and manufacture
partnership with Laboratorios Bagó would bring benefits to Seroquel products through more
competitive production costs while enhancing drug accessibility for local patients.
◼ According to the ABIHPEC (the Brazilian Association of personal hygiene, perfume, and cosmetics
industry), the worst of the crisis is over in Brazil, for sales of cosmetics. ABIHPEC forecasts a growth of
1.1% in 2020 for the entire perfume, cosmetics, and hygiene sector in Brazil.
◼ Driven by skyrocketing sales of products that help them prevent the spread of the COVID-19, like hand
sanitizers and soaps, the sector grew by 0.6% between January 2020 and May 2020. Compared to the
same period last year, the Brazilian market has increased by 0.6% in turnover and 2.8% in volume.
◼ In June 2020, Diageo Plc, one of the world’s largest spirits maker, doubled its efforts to strengthen its
presence in e-commerce channels in Brazil as the COVID-19 pandemic triggered lockdowns, driving
customers to drink at home. According to Diageo PLC, consumption at home has increased significantly
over the past few months but does not fully compensate for revenue lost with the closure of bars,
restaurants, nightclubs, and events.

◼ Diageo currently has partnerships with major retailers in Brazil, including international players, like
Amazon.com and MercadoLibre, and the local subsidiaries of French supermarkets groups Casino
Guichard Perrachon SA and Carrefour SA. Despite efforts to boost online channels, Brazil’s alcoholic
beverages association ABRABE predicts that the COVID-19 reduced total sales by an average of 50%.
◼ It is expected that the sales of alcoholic beverages in Brazil fell by 52% during the period between March
15, 2020, and March 31, 2020, when social distancing and quarantine measures were implemented to
avoid the contagion of the novel COVID-19 virus, according to guidelines issued by the Ministry of
Health and the World Health Organization (WHO)., ABRABE, which congregates producers of spirits,
beer, and wine, claims that 40% of them have felt an ever stronger decrease in sales since 61% of all
alcohol consumption takes place in bars, restaurants, and nightclubs, which were on lockdown.
◼ According to the ABRABE, with many bars and restaurants closed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the
dine-out market has slowed by 52% since March 15, 2020. However, restaurant data states that the
consumer relationship with ready meals is changing, with a recurring decrease in homemade meals,
especially on weekends.
◼ Also, in June 2020, Diageo announced a USD 100-million recovery fund to help bars, pubs, and
restaurants worldwide welcome customers after the lockdowns are lifted. The two-year program would
be available from July 2020 and is called “Raising the Bar.”
◼ This program would offer support for the recovery of major hospitality centers in Mexico City, Sao Paulo,
Shanghai, New York, London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Belfast, Mumbai, Bangalore Delhi, Nairobi, Dar es

4.2 COVERAGE ON IMPACT OF THE COVID-19 ON THE

GLASS BOTTLES INDUSTRY IN LATIN AND CENTRAL
AMERICA REGION
◼ Central America and the Caribbean region during COVID-19 :
◼ In the central region of Latin America, the preference for digital shopping witnessed increasing interest
from consumers. During the first three days of quarantine, In Costa Rica, Panama, and Guatemala, the
number of small-sized businesses interested in expanding and updating their digital platforms tripled,
according to the Association of Exporters and the Digital Commerce Camara of Guatemala. It is expected
that more than 25% of people in Guatemala and Colombia are using digital channels for grocery
purchases, bringing the country averages above those of much of Latin America.
◼ People are increasingly buying food and drinks in “modern” channels, like supermarkets, hypermarkets,
and drugstores versus more traditional markets. Part of this shift is owing to a perception of cleanliness
and safety and its widespread effects. As of April 2020, more than 1,000 “pulperías,” or small grocery
shops, were closed in Costa Rica.
◼ Despite the decline of the beverage industry in other countries, during the first days of the COVID-19
crisis, products, like orange juice, still drinks, and powder beverages, witnessed great growth in sales in
this region. Additionally, families have increased their food expenses, especially with the addition of
more non-perishables.
◼ Also, restaurant rules vary by country. For instance, in Costa Rica and Guatemala, the respective
governments declared restaurants “essential” to the population but only able to operate through
delivery or the pick and go model.
◼ Many companies diverted their resources to meet the unexpected rise in demand for specific products.
For instance, Brazilian beer company Ambev converted one of its breweries in Rio de Janeiro state to
alcohol gel production, manufacturing half a million bottles that would be distributed to public
hospitals. According to Ambev, demand for alcohol continues to grow, and there is already a shortage
on the market.

◼ Besides, various governments across the region are imposing bans on plastic packaging in
beverages, due to which beverage companies are trying to avoid plastic packaging, and the
alternate for that is likely to be glass bottles. For instance, in a broader initiative to cope up
with the huge Tonnes of garbage produces in Mexico city, a new law is being enacted since
February 2020 that prohibits the commercialization of plastic bags in supermarkets and
stores.
◼ Moreover, liquor and wine packaging in glass bottles provide a positive consumer perception
toward the brands. Consumers are preferring glass packaging in wine and relate other forms
of packaging to inferior quality products.
◼ Even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Fevisa, a Mexican beer bottle manufacturer, claimed in
April 2020 that they were able to continue the production of glass, as usual, owing to the
declaration by the Mexican government to consider glassmaking as an essential business. The

◼ Glass is also among the most preferred packaging material for packaging alcoholic beverages, such as
spirits. Various vendors in the market studied are observing increasing demand from the spirit industry.
The ability of glass bottles to preserve the aroma and flavor of the product is driving the demand.

◼ The glass bottles are also most favored in wine packaging, especially colored glass, owing to its ability to
limit the exposure to sunlight. The growing consumption of wine is expected to spearhead the glass
packaging demand during the forecasted period. Besides, wine glass packaging manufacturers are
innovating their offerings keeping in pace with the latest trends.

◼ However, the logistics aspect of the liquor packaged in glass bottles is challenging the growth. As glass is
comparatively more cumbersome and prone to breakage during transport, increasing the chances of
goods loss. However, vendors are trying to innovate the packaging aspect of glass bottles as well.

◼ Moreover, even producers of liquor, such as gin, are also facing issues with the weight of glass bottles used
in the packaging of their products. In such regard, manufacturers are looking to offer lighter glass bottles
to gin manufacturers and heavier and thick-bottomed glass bottles for cognac.

◼ More and more liquor manufacturers are becoming conscious of the use of recycled materials in their
packaging and increasing the percentage of recycled glass used in their bottles. Owing to such increasing
demand from various liquor vendors and consumer preferences, glass packaging type in liquor is expected
to augment the demand over the forecasted period.

◼ Within the packaging for beer, manufacturers based out of the region are moving toward environmental
and sustainable packaging solutions, owing to which the packaging of beer is moving toward other
materials, resulting in sluggish growth for glass bottle packaging of beer.

◼ Addressing such concerns, other beer vendors are looking to increase the recycling and re-usability of
glass bottles and are investing in such technologies.

consumption of soft drinks, respectively. Soft drinks held a prominent share of single-use plastic bottles. Nevertheless, various soft drink vendors are currently
switching back to glass bottles, owing to the increasing government regulation.

◼ The increase in demand from soft-drink vendors is helping bottle packaging solution providers, and packaging vendors are increasing their capacities as well.
Moreover, glass packaging vendors are trying to provide customized packaging solutions to soft drinks vendors.

◼ Moreover, the dairy industry in the region has been witnessing a backward shift from plastic to glass bottles. Driven by consumer demand for environmentally friendly
milk, many small dairy market players choose to sell their products in reusable bottles. The demand for glass bottles in the milk industry has been increasing.

◼ Moreover, companies are taking several initiatives to encourage people to use glass bottles by providing door-to-door delivery of fresh milk bottles. Thus, the market
studied is expected to witness significant growth opportunities over the forecast period.

◼ Most of the dairies from London mentioned that most of the change is from their younger consumers whose families seem more than willing to pay a little extra for
the service rather than the plastic in their efforts to help the environment. Moreover, to increase sales and brand recognition, many of the dairies have been adopting
glass bottle packaging for milk.

◼ The glass bottle industry has also been witnessing adoption by the milkshake providers in recent years. Owing to such developments in the dairy sector, the glass
bottle packaging are expected to further surge in demand in the foreseen period.

◼ However, according to the data from US export trade, the exports to Mexico from the US dairy plants is overtaken by ASEAN, to become the largest US dairy export
destination by volume as of August 2020. With the continuation of current shipment trends, the ASEAN region is likely to retain the top position.

between the Preserve Planet organization and the WilDTours Costa Rica company, which aims to
eradicate the use of single-use plastic bottles in the tourism industry.

 Under the brand Topo Chico, Coca-Cola company has begun to commercialize in the Costa Rican country
a carbonated drink with alcohol, which belongs to the category called "hard seltzer" or "spiked seltzer.“
 In Costa Rica, Topo Chico Hard Seltzer would compete with "Adam & Eve," a product of the same category
that is marketed since 2019 by Florida Ice, Farm & Co (Fifco). This category of drinks is gaining interest
among consumers.
 According to the country's Ministry of Foreign Trade, imports of cosmetic products have increased in the
past few years. The consumer habits of the country are becoming more complex, owing to an increased
awareness of aging processes. Consumers in Costa Rica are investing more in premium products &
services. Also, Guatemala and Colombia have become important competitors within the Central American
region, owing to sustained development in the cosmetic industry and recent free trade agreements.
 Beer and Spirits are the most prominent alcoholic beverages in the country, such as El Salvador. The
popularity of spirits and beer underpinned the industry’s strong performance in the year 2019 as rising
incomes and urbanization bolstered demand.
 In June 2020, the Government of El Salvador, through the Minister of Health, announced 5 phases of
economic reopening. Phase 1 included all the activities that were enabled during the emergency, food &
beverage manufacturing industries, cleaning and hygiene products, textile & clothing industry,
construction, and metalworking industry, among others. Phase 2 included, in addition to Phase 1 sectors,
the plastic industry, paper and cardboard industry, shoe industry, cosmetic industry, other manufacturing
industries, and creative industries, among others.
 In September 2020, Balaxi Ventures, a Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical firm, announced that it plans to
enter the Central American markets of Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Honduras by setting up wholly-owned
distribution units, eyeing these smaller but high-margin pharmaceutical markets.

 This expansion in El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Honduras follows the company's foray into the landlocked
Central African Republic last year. The pharmaceutical company plans to start operations in all three
markets by the first quarter of next year.
 Moreover, consumers are increasingly willing to buy beverages with low alcohol content, but also for
flavored beers. These trends are visible in Panama, which is in third place in Latin America in terms of beer
production. According to the International Association of Home Brewers (PSPD), currently, every fifty-beer
bought comes from a small, local plant, and only 2% of beer sold in the country is imported.
 The craft beer market in Panama has been growing since 2013. Various local breweries have opted to
participate in international competitions, where they have obtained high recognition, helping with this to
position the country in the international market as a country of quality beer production. There is potential
for the growth of craft beer in Panama, especially in the cities where are more tourists and ex-pats, but the
cheap commercial lagers would keep dominating the market.
 In May 2018, with an investment of close to USD 7 million, the launch of El Zapote Brewing Company was
announced, which would produce and market six types of craft beers in the local market in Panama. The
company would have a production capacity of 2,500 liters per brewing session. They plan to market the
product in local restaurants and supermarkets, in presentations of 20-liter barrels and 12-ounce bottles.
 Honduras has one of the largest pharmaceutical markets in the region. There is a big opportunity inf the
pharmaceutical market with the right incentives, as well as management. The country could be one of the
dominating countries in the pharmaceutical market if the public image is restored and the government
addresses new legislation towards that specific market.
 In August 2020, Molson Coors Beverage Co signed a partnership with Nicaragua’s largest brewer to
expand Miller Lite into the country. Miller Lite would roll out in Nicaragua in the coming months as part of
a multi-year partnership with Companía Cervecera de Nicaragua. Managua-based CCN would brew,
market, and distribute Miller Lite from the fourth quarter, Molson Coors stated.

 A company such as Carib Glassworks Ltd (CGL) is the manufacturer of glass packaging in the English-
speaking Caribbean. Located in Trinidad & Tobago, the company is a prominent producer of standard
and customized glass packaging of bottles, jars, and containers for the alcohol, beer, soft drink, food
processing & chemical industries, meeting International Quality and Environmental standards. CGL
exports throughout the Caribbean and the United States.
 The company’s manufacturing facility is modern, with robust design and testing facilities, quality raw
material sourcing, and advanced production capabilities. Customer-focused, CGL works with customers
to bring the product to market, delivering development and design services. While manufacturing new
bottles are using up to 40% of recycled glass, CGL saves energy and natural resources and is
environmentally responsible.
 A container glass manufacturing plant is likely to be built in the Dominican Republic, which would
manufacture 500 million bottles per year. The companies Caribbean Glass Industry and the Dominican
National Brewery announced a partnership in November 2020 that they say would lead to the
reactivation of the glass industry in the Dominican Republic with the construction of the glass
production plant.
 This plant would have enough capacity to satisfy national demand and would generate new jobs. The
facility would be located in the municipality of Pedro Brand, within the free zone complex of the same
name. An important part of its production would use locally collected glass, thus promoting a circular
economy model. According to the terms of this agreement, it is set to start production at the end of
March 2021, and once in operation, the facility would employ 300 people. In the past, Carib Glassworks
has also invested in a plant in Cuba.
 The alcohol industry was most exposed to the impact of COVID-19 in the Caribbean due to government
measures (both impacting domestic consumer spending patterns and tourism) implemented to stem the
spread of COVID-19 and a deteriorating economic outlook.
 The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a reduction in drug sales by 25 to 30% for pharmacies in the
Dominican Republic. Also, some products related to the COVID-19 virus increased, according to the
executive director of the Union of Pharmacies, Inc., Scarlet Sánchez.

 Also, demand is different for drug importers in the country. According to the
Association of Pharmaceutical Representatives, Agents and Producers, Inc.
(ARAPF), they have an increased demand for pharmaceutical products and,
hence, the need to increase the importation of drugs. They further said that
consumers had assumed unusual behavior when buying medications to
strengthen their immune system and avoid getting the virus.

 Historically, Cuba has been a place of alcoholic beverages such as rum. Famous
Cuban cocktails include Cuba Libre, Mojito, Daiquiri, Pina Colada. Beer is also
popular in the country. Given its historical linkages, consumption of alcoholic
beverages has been common in the nation. Famous Cuban beer includes
Cristal, Hatuey, La- Tropical, Cubay Clasica, and Bucanero Fuerte, among others.

 In August 2019, Diageo entered into the Cuban rum industry with a joint
venture between its European subsidiary and rum producer Corporación Cuba
Ron SA. This deal would give exclusive global distribution rights to Santiago de
Cuba, the second-largest premium Cuban rum brand. Santiago de Cuba would
join Diageo Europe’s portfolio of Reserve luxury spirits with its four core
variants (Carta Blanca, Anejo, 11-year-old, and 12-year-old). Hence, such
developments in the region are expected to drive the market’s growth
positively.

8. MARKET OUTLOOK
◼ Glass has been one of the primary packaging materials used for the packaging of cosmetic products and
perfumeries. The unique combination of hermeticity, transparency, strength, and chemical durability offered
by glass makes it the optimal material for such an important role.
◼ Even with the advent of materials, such as plastics and metal cans, glass remains the most common
packaging container for parenteral purposes; and the trend is expected to continue in the future. The
introduction of new labeling techniques, coupled with ever-changing consumer preferences, helps
manufacturers invent new forms of glass packaging for cosmetic products.
◼ Sustainability is driving major changes in consumer packaging. Fast-Moving Consumer Goods companies
and retailers are proactively making bold commitments to enhance both the sustainability of their packaging
and fundamentally rethink their packaging systems.
◼ FMCG manufacturers & retailers have begun to experiment with complete packaging redesigns and the
fundamental rethinking of their delivery chains, including circular delivery models. They are looking to curb
plastic-waste generation by experimenting with the use of glass in returnable systems. Moreover, major
brands are starting to self-regulate.
◼ Coca Cola announced its plans to make 100% of its packaging recyclable globally by 2025 and use at least
50% recycled material in its packaging by 2030. The company strives to make all its glass bottles, aluminum
cans, and plastic bottles recyclable.
◼ Previously, Latin America had relatively low sustainability commitments with few regulations in place through
the early 2000s. However, in the past few years, there has been a considerable rise in awareness. Between
2016 and 2019, many local and federal bills have been approved or proposed in countries across the region.
◼ The government initiative to limit plastic use for various environmental concerns will boost the glass
packaging industry in the future. Several parts of the region have introduced legislation to restrict or ban
plastics. For example, Costa Rica pledged to become one of the world's first countries to be single-use
plastics free by 2021. This would open up opportunities for glass bottles and containers where end-users
verticals would adopt glass packaging in the future for the majority of their products.
◼ Latin American consumers show a great deal of interest in sustainable packaging. Consumers in Brazil
perceive the glass to be more sustainable and visually appealing than plastic. However, glass is heavy, easily
breakable, and needs substantial energy to transport.

8. MARKET OUTLOOK
◼ Hence, In 2019, packaging manufacturer Amcor developed the first PET bottles for pasteurized beer in
Brazil. Utilizing PET for New Age’s Salzburg beer brand provided a glass-like container combined with the
convenience of lightweight and shatter-resistant PET. The company has also developed transparent 1L PET
bottles exclusively for prominent Brazilian dairy company Letti to replace the traditional white HDPE bottles.
Such innovation highlights the opportunity to utilize the visual appeal and quality perceptions of glass while
offering a sustainable packaging solution.
◼ CBC is a multinational corporation of beverages founded in 1885 that operates in South America, Central
America, and the Caribbean, and having the biggest portfolio of products in the region. The company
encourages the formation of micro-enterprises dedicated to the recovery and commercialization of
recyclable materials, with an emphasis on post-consumption bottles, cans, and non-returnable glass bottles.
◼ Also, in recent years, light-weighting of glass bottles has become a focal point in the industry, compared to
the traditional glass bottles, and is expected to remain the same in the coming years. For instance, Verallia
SA started operations in the Jacutinga plant in Minas Gerais state (Brazil) to meet the growing demand for
lightweight bottles in the region. Premiumization is also a growing trend in the region. For instance, Mexico
is witnessing an increasing trend for premiumization (sophisticated bottles) in the drinks sector, for example,
tequilas and mezcal. This, in turn, would push the vendors to produce sophisticated bottles in the near
future.
◼ The growing consumption of alcoholic drinks such as beer in Latin American countries is projected to
augment the demand of the glass packaging industry in the near future. Glass bottles offer excellent uses
for the food & beverage industry by maintaining the quality of their contents and protecting the product
from external factors. Anheuser-Busch InBev's Mexican unit, Grupo Modelo, is building a USD 755 million
brewery and bottling plant about 55 miles northeast of Mexico City. The plant is capable of producing about
320 million gallons of beer annually, or 9 million bottles daily. This will create a scope for the market studied.
◼ In December 2020, VSBLTY Groupe Technologies Corp, a provider of security and retail marketing
technology, along with Mexico’s Grupo Modelo and Retailigent Media signed a Letter of Intent to create an
global in-store media network of up to 50,000 Modelorama stores and independent neighborhood bodegas
in Mexico, with the potential to expand to other Central and South American countries by the end of 2027.
The deployment would start in more than 5,000 Modelorama stores and 15,000 neighborhood bodegas
throughout Mexico. Modelorama is Mexico’s second-largest convenience store chain and is owned by the
Grupo Modelo.

8. MARKET OUTLOOK
◼ Beer packaging is the prominent category in the Latin American region, with glass bottles being the
dominant pack type, reflecting the drive by major brewers to leverage its greatest asset, i.e., returnability.
Latin America's beer industry is highly concentrated around returnable family-sized glass bottles, with eco-
friendly glass weights expected to gain growth in the future. This, together with increased sales of craft and
premium beers, is also helping to drive growth in the use of glass bottles throughout the region.
◼ Glass has been one of the primary packaging materials used for the packaging of Pharmaceutical and
multiple drugs and biologic formulations. The unique combination of hermeticity, transparency, strength,
and chemical durability makes glass the optimal material for such purposes. Companies are encouraged by
the FDA’s role to facilitate the adoption of emerging technologies, such as Valor Glass, with the potential to
enhance biopharmaceutical product quality on a broad scale.
◼ To tackle the increasing demand for Pharmaceutical glass packaging, companies are continuously
increasing their production capacities. In April 2019, the technology group, SCHOTT, invested BRL 50
million in its pharmaceutical tubing production in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as part of its global growth
strategy. As the pharmaceutical industry demand increases, the company is contributing to manufacture
100% inspection of glass tubing to detect possible defects.
◼ In Mexico, cosmetics with added sunblock are anticipated to be in increased demand in the coming years.
The National Chamber of the Cosmetics Industry (CANIPEC) is boosting consumer awareness through
educational campaigns about the risks of sun exposure. The Mexican consumer is becoming savvier on this
issue and is starting to look for products that include SPF. The growth of the cosmetics industry is
anticipated to boost the demand for glass bottles in the near future.
◼ Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, and Chile are the top markets in Latin America, witnessing a high growth rate in
the cosmetics industry. Numerous home-grown market players have been witnessed to have flourishing
cosmetics business in Latin America. Growth in the sales of products, such as premium perfumes, skincare,
and hair care products, would drive the demand for glass bottles and containers for the cosmetics industry
in the future.
