Muy buenos días tengan todos ustedes

estudiantes y padres de familia. Agradecemos

SIMPLE PAST
Se usa para:

- Hablar de acciones completadas en

el pasado

- Hechos del pasado

- Se usa con palabras de tiempo

terminado (Yesterday, last week, in

2010, etc)

- Por lo general, se usa pasado simple

después de "when"

EJEMPLOS:

- I went to the cinema yesterday.

- I lived near Cambridge for a couple of

years.

- When i was younger, I played with my

cousins all the time.

SIMPLE PAST
PAST CONTINUOUS
OR PROGRESSIVE
Se usa para:

- Expresar una acción interrumpida en el

pasado.

- Para referirse a acciones que ocurrían

simultáneamente.

- Muestra que una acción ya estaba en

proceso en cierto tiempo en el pasado.

EJEMPLOS

- What were you doing at 8 p.m. last night?

I was studying. This means that i started

studying before 8p.m. and I continued after

8p.m.

- We were cleaning the house all morning.

- She couldn't come to the party. She was

working.
PAST CONTINUOUS
¿CÓMO USAR "WHEN" Y
"WHILE"?
Cuando hablamos de una acción que ha sido

interrumpida por otra, observamos que la

opción interrumpida la expresamos en

presente continuo y la acción que provoca

la interrupción está en pasado simple.

“When” y “while” señalan el uso del pasado

simple y continuo.

Usamos el pasado simple directamente

después de “when” y el pasado

continuo después de “while”.

EJEMPLOS

- I was sleeping when you arrived. Estaba durmiendo cuando

llegaste.

- While she was walking, she found a wallet. Mientras iba

caminando, se encontró una cartera.

- My father was cooking while my mother was putting the

table. Mi padre estaba cocinando mientras mi madre ponía

la mesa
WE USE THEM BOTH WHEN (LOS
USAMOS JUNTOS CUANDO):

- When the past simple action happened in the

middle of the past continous action, while it was in

progress (cuando la acción del pasado simple

pasa en medio de la acción del pasado continuo,

mientras esta estaba en proceso):

While I was studying, I suddenly felt sleepy

(mientras estaba estudiando, de repente, me

dormí).

- We often use these tenses to show an action

interrupting another action (A menudo usamos

estos tiempos para mostrar una acción que

interrumpe otra acción.):

I broke my leg when i was skiing.

We were watching tv when the power went off. (Me

rompí la pierna cuando estaba esquiando.

Estábamos viendo televisión cuando se fue la luz.)

NOTA: Utilizamos WERE para los
sujetos en plural: we (nosotros/as),
you (ustedes), they (ellos/ellas). Y
utilizamos WAS para los sujetos en
singular: I (yo), you (tú), he (él), she
(ella), it (eso).
