PERMEABILITY IN SOILS
Juan Eduardo Soto Mora1 Paula Andrea Gómez Saray2 Sebastian Charry Roa3

Abstract
The soils are formed by solid mineral particles that leave voids between them. These voids are
interconnected and allow the flow of water through them. This converts the soils into water-permeable
materials. It is defined as permeability to the capacity of the soil to allow the passage of a fluid (in individual
terms, water) without this transit altering the internal structure of the same. The permeability is quantified
on the basis of the permeability coefficient, defined as the velocity of translation of the water within the
terrain and for a unitary of the gradient. In experimental practice in the laboratory, two cylinders with soil
samples were taken, where the degree of permeability was determined by applying to each of the water
samples, saturating the inside of the constant head tank by means of rings, where Measured for a test 5
seconds and for the second test with a time of 10 seconds, measuring its total flow elapsed in the given
time, giving the coefficient of permeability expressed in terms of speed. The constant load permeability test
is of great importance, since the soil is mostly in contact with water, and it is of great interest for engineers
to know the behavior of the soil.
