En este artículo se recogen los principales hechos de la
cronología de la exploración europea, desde 1418 hasta
1948, entendiendo por tal la llevada a cabo por las principales
naciones de Europa y de las personas a su servicio, en
muchos casos protagonizada por personas nacidas en
territorios antes inexplorados y que pasaron a formar parte de
las nuevas colonias.
el siglo XV vio la conquista de América y la llegada a lasislas de las Especias. En 1492 Cristóbal Colón
descubre América y desde ese momento los españoles enviaron cada vez más expediciones al Nuevo
Mundo, centrándose primero en explorar el [[mar Caribe] y ampliando cada vez más sus conquistas.
Varios países enviaron a explorar partes en el interior de las Américas, así como a sus respectivas
costas oriental y occidental, al norte de la península de California y de la península del Labrador y en el
sur de Chile y el archipiélago de Tierra del Fuego;
el siglo XVI fue el de la exploración y conquista por los rusos deSiberia en busca de pieles, mientras
que los neerlandeses cartografiaban por vez primera partes del litoral del emergente continente
australiano;
el siglo XVII vio la primera exploración extensa del Pacífico Sur y el descubrimiento de Alaska;
el siglo XVIII estuvo dominado por la exploración de las regiones polares (además de las excursiones
al corazón de África);
el siglo XIX ve caer los últimos lugares inexplorados: se conquistan los propios Polos y no queda
ningún territorio inexplorado en toda la Tierra.
La cronología se ha realizado en forma de tabla, ordenando como es lógico de forma cronológica, pero
pudiéndose hacerse de varias maneras sin más que clikar en la primera fila de cada columna. Para facilitar la
consulta, se han dispuesto dos columnas en las que se recoge el ámbito de la exploración: la primera según
el continente, y la segunda según el océano o mar. Estas dos columnas son usasdas en sentido amplio y de
mayor importancia: aunque Vasco de Gama navegó en aguas aún poco conocidas del Atlántico y de las
costas africanas, su mayor proeza es haber alcanzado el subcontinente indio, que es lo que se destaca. En
el epígrafe general de océanos, normalmente se consideran incluidos todos los mares contienentales; esto
es, en el Ártico, se consideran los mares de Kara, Láptev, Siberia Oriental, Chutki, etc.

1500 Vicente Yáñez Pinzón descubre Brasil, llegando a un América Atlántico Siglo
cabo que nombra como «Santa María de la XVI
Consolación» (cabo de Santo Agostinho) y navega
cincuenta millas río arriba un río que llama
«Marañón» (el Amazonas).2

1511 Duarte Fernandes lidera una misión diplomática al Asia —
reino de Ayutthaya (Siam o Tailandia).10
1513 Juan Ponce de León descubre «La Florida» (Florida) América Atlántico
y la península de Yucatán.2
1516 Juan Díaz de Solís alcanza el estuario de lo que llama América Atlántico
La Mar Dulce (ahora el Río de la Plata).2
1519 Hernán Cortés viaja desde Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz Norteamérica —
hasta la capital azteca de Tenochtitlan en el lago de
Texcoco.18

1519– La expedición de Fernando de Magallanes completa América Pacífico
1522 la primera circunnavegación de la Tierra, explorando
la costa de la Patagonia y descubriendo y
atravesando el estrecho de Magallanes.21
1522 Gil González Dávila explora el interior desde el golfo América Pacífico
de Nicoya, descubriendo el lago Nicaragua, mientras
su piloto Andrés Niño explora la costa hacia el oeste,
descubriendo el golfo de Fonseca y quizás llegando
hasta la costa suroccidental de la moderna
Guatemala.14
1525 Los portugueses alcanzan las islas «Célebes». 25 Oceanía Índico
1526 Alonso de Salazar descubre las islas Marshall (atolón Oceanía Pacífico
Bokak).26
1528 Diogo Rodrigues explora las islas Mascareñas (que África Índico
nombra en reconocimiento de Pedro Mascarenhas),
nombrando las islas de Réunion, Mauritius y
Rodrigues.28

1528– Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca y otros tres son los Norteamérica —
1536 únicos supervivientes de un grupo de varios cientos
de colonosque viajan desde la costa occidental de
Florida hasta el río Sinaloa, en el norte de México,
donde encuentran esclavos españoles.29
1539 Francisco de Ulloa navega hasta el fondo del golfo de Norteamérica Pacífico
California y alrededor de la península de California
hasta la isla Cedros, estableciendo que la Baja
California es una península y no una isla como se
pensaba.30

1541– Francisco de Orellana navega aguas abajo el curso Sudamérica —
1542 completo del río Amazonas. 32
1543 Ruy López de Villalobos descubre tres islas (Fais, Oceanía Pacífico
Ulithi y Yap) en las islas Carolinas y ocho atolones
(Kwajalein, Lae, Ujae, Wotho, Likiep, Wotje, Erikub y
Maloelap) en las islas Marshall.26
1543 Jean Alfonse explora aguas arriba el río Saguenay, Norteamérica Atlántico
pensando que sería «la mer du Cattay».7
1553 Hugh Willoughby busca el Paso del Noreste por Asia Ártico
Rusia; alcanza la isla Kolguyev o Novaya Zemlya.34
1565 Miguel López de Legazpi descubre las islas Mejit, Oceanía Pacífico
Ailuk y Jemo en las islas Marshall, mientras su
subordinado Alonso de Arellano descubre la isla Lib
en el mismo grupo de islas, así como cinco islas
(Oroluk, Chuuk, Pulap, Sorol y Ngulu) en las islas
Carolinas.26

1585 John Davis explora el estrecho de Davis, alcanzando Norteamérica Atlántico
los 66°40′ N; también navega en dirección norte por
el Cumberland Sound, pensando que era el "pasaje a
Catai". 7
1602– Bento de Góis viaja por tierra desde India hasta Asia —
1606 China, vía Afganistán y los Pamires.41
1606 Luis Váez de Torres navega a través del estrecho de Oceanía Pacífico
Torres que ahora le honra con su nombre.43

1610 Kondratiy Kurochkin lidera una expedición, Asia Ártico
navegando en kochi, desde Turukhansk hasta la boca
del río Yenisei y luego sigue la costa al este hasta la
boca del río Pyasina en la península de Taimir.3437
1616 Dirk Hartog explora unos 576 km de línea costera (la Australia Índico
costa de Australia Occidental, desde cerca de los
22°S hasta los 28°S), descubriendo la isla Dirk Hartog
y la bahía Shark.52
1618 Lenaert Jacobszoon descubre una isla a los 22°S (la Australia Índico
costa de Australia Occidental desde punta Cloates
hasta el cabo Noroeste).43

1619 Frederick de Houtman avista la costa de Australia Australia Índico
Occidental cerca de Fremantle y navega a lo largo de

1632– Piotr Beketov desciende el río Lena hasta su gran Asia —
1633 curva, erige el ostrog Yakutsk, y envía un
destacamento unos 720 km río abajo (donde se
construye el zimovie de Zhigansk) y otro hacia el
este, remontando el río Aldan hasta llegar al lejano río
Amga (que también ascienden en búsqueda de
yasak).3740

1644 Mijaíl Stadujin alcanza el río Kolyma.37 Asia —
1651– Stadujin viaja desde Anadyrsk hasta la boca del río Asia Pacífico
1657 Penzhina, y luego sigue hacia el oeste a lo largo de la
costa septentrional del mar de Ojotsk hasta
Ojotsk.3757
1653– Piotr Beketov asciende el río Khilok, cruza los montes Asia —
1654 Yablonoi meridionales, y desciende el río Ingoda y
luego el río Shilka hasta la confluencia con el río
Nercha (donde sus hombres construyen el ostrog de
Nerchinsk).37

1688– Jacques de Noyon descubre el lago Rainy y el lago de Norteamérica —
1689 los Bosques.61
1706 Mikhail Nasedkin alcanza el cabo Lopatka y avista Asia Pacífico Siglo
Shumshu, la más septentrional de las islas Kuriles.57 XVIII
1728 Vitus Bering navega a través del estrecho que ahora Asia Ártico
lleva su nombre; también descubre y nombra la isla
San Lorenzo.34

1737 Dmitry Ovtsyn cartografía la costa rusa desde la Asia Ártico
desembocadura del Obi hasta la boca del Yenisei.36
1738– Fyodor Minin cartografía la costa rusa desde la boca Asia Ártico
1740 del río Yeniséi hasta la del río Pyasina.36
1739– Dmitri Láptev cartografía la costa rusa desde la boca Asia Ártico
1741 del río Lena hasta justo el este de la boca del río
Kolyma.36
1741 Bering avista el monte San Elias, la entrada del Norteamérica Ártico
Prince William Sound, la península de Alaska (desde
el cabo Providence hasta bahía Chignik) y varias de
las islas Aleutianas (descubriendo Great Sitkin, Atka y
Kiska), así como descubriendo las islas Kayak,
Montague, Hinchinbrook, Sitkalidak, y las islas
Shumagin y las islas del Comandante; su segundo,
Aleksei Chirikov, avista los montes Fairweather y
Douglas y descubre Noyes y Baker Islands (ambas en
la costa de la isla del Príncipe de Gales), así como las
islas Baranof, Chichagof, Kruzof, Yakobi, Kodiak,
Afognak, varias de las islas Aleutianas (Umnak, Adak,
Agattu, Attu, y the Islas de los Cuatro Volcanes), y la
península de Kenai.68

1771– Samuel Hearne alcanza el río Coppermine, Norteamérica —
1772 descendiéndolo hasta lo que ahora es conocido
como golfo de la Coronación; el año siguiente, en el
viaje de regreso, es el primero en avistar y cruzar el
Gran Lago del Esclavo.22
1775 Bruno de Heceta descubre la boca del río Columbia; Norteamérica Pacífico
su compañero Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra
descubre la isla del Príncipe de Gales (bahía
Bucareli).74

1791– George Vancouver, junto con William Broughton, Norteamérica Pacífico
1794 Peter Puget, Joseph Whidbey y James Johnstone,
cartografía los modernos estados de Oregon y
Washington, la costa de la Columbia Británica y el
Alaska Panhandle, descubriendo las islas Admiralty,
Mitkof y Wrangell en el archipiélago Alexander, así
como probando la insularidad de la isla Kuiu y las
islas Revillagigedo; también cartografía el Admiralty
Inlet y el Puget Sound y descubre las islas Chatham y
The Snares.76
1796 Mungo Park alcanza la parte alta del río Níger, África —
explorándolo desde Ségou hasta Silla.77
1797– George Bass explora desde el cabo Howe to Western Australia Índico/Pacífico
1798 Port, descubriendo el estrecho de Bass.52

1802 Nicolas Baudin explora la costa australiana desde el Australia Índico
cabo Banks hasta la bahía Encounter, donde se
encuentra con Flinders.52
1805 Zebulon Pike, desde St. Louis, explora las fuentes del Norteamérica —
río Misisipi.
1805– Mungo Park desciende el río Níger hasta los rápidos África —
1806 Bussa, donde muere ahogado.77
1819 William Smith descubre las islas Shetland del Sur.82 Antártida Antártico

1821 John Franklin explora unos 800 km de línea costera Norteamérica
desde la boca del río Coppermine hasta punta
Turnagain en la península de Kent.85
1823 El foquero James Weddell navega hasta los 74°15′ S Antártida Antártico
en el «King George IV's Sea» (mar de Weddell).89
1825– Franklin explora la línea de costa ártica desde la boca Norteamérica Ártico
1826 del río Mackenzie en dirección oeste hasta punta
Beechey, mientras su compañero John Richardson
explora el este hasta el río Coppermine, nombrando
el estrecho Dolphin and Union y descubriendo la
«Wollaston Land» (parte de la costa meridional de la
isla Victoria) —cartografían juntos 1930 km de línea
costera; Richardson también reconoce los cinco
brazos del Gran Lago del Oso.91
1829- John Ross descubre «Boothia Felix» (la península Norteamérica Ártico
30 Boothia); el año siguiente, su sobrino James Clark
Ross cruza su estrecho istmo y alcanza la isla King
William.93

1831– John Biscoe descubre la Tierra de Enderby; el año Antártida Antártico
1832 siguiente descubre la isla Adelaida, la isla Anvers y
las islas Biscoe.67
1839 John Balleny descubre las islas Balleny y avista la Antártida Antártico
costa Sabrina (121° E).81
1841– James Clark Ross descubre el mar de Ross, alcanza Antártida Antártico
1843 78°09′30″ S, y descubre el volcán activo del monte
Erebus en la isla de Ross, la barrera de hielo de Ross,
y la Tierra de Victoria; también avista las islas Snow
Hill, Seymour y James Ross.98

cartografían la península Sabine de la isla Melville,
desde el cabo Mudge al este hasta punta Bradford; el
último, junto con Sherard Osborn, también

1860– Robert O'Hara Burke y William Wills son los primeros Australia —
1861 en cruzar Australia desde el sur al norte, viajando
desde Melbourne hasta el río Flinders.5

desde el cabo Washington hasta el cabo Clarence XX
Wyckoff, y en ese viaje alcanza el cabo Morris Jesup,
el punto más septentrional de la Groenlandia
continental.116
1908– Frederick Cook y Peary reclaman cada uno haber Ártico Ártico
1909 alcanzado el Polo Norte —el primero fue un fraude,
del segundo existen amplias dudas.110

1927 George P. Putnam cartografía la costa septentrional Norteamérica Ártico
de la península Foxe, desde el cabo Dorchester hasta
