Edozein artelan ezin uler daiteke entregatu diguten zerbait bezala soilik, baizik eta
ezin azalduzkoaren nolabaiteko manipulazio bezala ere bai. Arte handian, beti egoten
gara jakitun ezin esan daitezkeen gauzez (decorumaren arauak), adierazpenaren eta
ezin adieraz daitekeenaren presentziaren arteko kontraesanaz. Asmakizun estilistikoak
saiheste-teknikak ere badira. Artelan baten elementu ahaltsuenak, sarritan, beraren
isiluneak dira Susan Sontag
Nahi dudana limurtzeko ahalmena dut Iris Murdoch
Mireya Martnen lanean barneratzean izan nuen lehenengo sentsazioa izan zen sartu izana
gogoratzen ez nuen etxe batean esnatzea. Goiz batean etxe arrotz batean esnatzea eta intimitatez
jositako geletatik arretagabe ibiltzea, batetik bestera, deseroso sentitu gabe; are gehiago,
neure burua elementu jakin batzuetan aurkituz beste bizitza bateko nahaspila partikularrean.
Erakargarritasun, zorabio eta lotsa berehala bihurtzen den emozio bat.
Beraren lanetan sartzen naizenean errepikatzen den beste efektu bat, batez ere animazioen
kasuan, poema baten gaiaren barnean sartzea da, edo abesti baten bihotzean sartzea, eta
musikaren trinkotasunari neu inguratzen uztea, lehenengo aldiz ulertzen ez den letraren xuxurlari
neu inguratzen uztea, gero, azkenean, zure modura deszifratu eta asmatzen baduzu ere.
Mireyak marrazkia, irudi bideografikoa eta instalazioa aukeratzen ditu: obren solidifikazioa
eragozten duten teknologia eta materialak. Hauskortasuna eta iradokizuna nahiago ditu gai
bezala. Marra, papera bere ehundurekin, eta mugimenduan dagoen irudia, bitarteko egokiak
dira bere pentsaera-korronteen motibazioak eta efektuak ez ixteko.
Aldi berean, konpromiso feminista hartuta duten beste artista batzuekin gertatzen den bezala,
erabaki horrek abardura politikoa ere izan dezake; izan ere, genero handiei (pintura eta
eskultura) uko egitea eta praktika artistikoaren ertzak bultzatzea lagungarria da emakumeak
autore gisa baztertu dituen Artearen Historiaren zamatik ihes egiteko. Marrazkia, animazioa
eta bideoa uztartzen dituzten eta espazioan hedatzen diren bitarteko hibrido iheskorrago
horien aldeko hautua Pipilotti Rist, Susi Jirkuff edo Shahzia Sikanderren lanarekin konektatuko
litzateke, narratiba pertsonalen eta musikaren aldeko interesa berarekin konpartitzen duten
autore batzuk aipatzearren.
Mireyaren lanek kutsu berezi bat dute, hots, lurralde anbiguo batean, kanpoaldearen eta
barnealdearen arten, flotatzera daramatzan kutsu berezi bat. Ametsaren barnean eta kanpoan,
pentsamenduaren barnean eta kanpoan, nahiaren kanpoan eta barnean; era horretan, uko egiten dio
bere aurkikuntza propioak eta bere narratibak ikusleari ezartzeari, geu izan gaitezen beste ikuspegi
bat gehitzen dugunok. Gorputzaren barnean eta kanpoan. Mugarik gabeko gorputz bat, mugaldean
artean jarrita, animalia, lorea, hezurrak, barneko organoa dena eta ez dena. Beraren panteismoa.
Artistaren animazioek, marrazkia eta argazkia, kolorea eta ehundurak uztartuta, natura dute aipagai,
gorputzaren haustura eta oroimena bere eraldaketen katean, animaliengan (hala nola hontza
edo sugea), frutetan eta paisaietan. Bilatutako nahaspila ikonografiko horren kontrapuntu
bezala, baina, artistaren obraren izenburuak hizkuntza-elementu erantsi bat dira: erreferente

literario ironikoak, hasieran ezin azalduzkoa eta ezin kontatuzkoa iruditu zitzaigunari ahotsa
jartzen diotenak. Izenburu dekadente ederren, kultu-filmen elkarrizketen edo esaera filosofikoen
zaporearekin, esaera horiek adjektibatu eta mugatzen dituzte ikusgai jarritako irudiak: El otoo
Misteriotik sartuta guretzat hartu dugun etxe horretan, argiak altzariak eta arropa pilak
bainatzen ditu gela batzuetan, baina beste batzuetara ilunpetan eta haztamuka sartu behar dugu,
malabarismoak eginez mahai bateko punta ez jotzeko edo liburu-dorreekin estropezu ez egiteko.
Ez erortzen saiatzen gara, baina batzuetan talkak sortzen dira ezinbestean, beraren soinu-paisaien
alderdi ilunena eta beltzena da, inkontzientera bidaltzen gaituena. Gorputz zatikatua, pultsio eta
auto-sendaketa holistikoen isla. Burua, aldaka edo bihotza beldurrei buruz mintzatzen hasten dira,
bizitzaren hauskortasunari buruz, denboraren joanari buruz, mintzatzean eta isiltzearen artean
artistak egiten dituen negoziazioei buruz. Sentitze horrek Sylvia Plathen barneko sufrimendua
nahastuko luke Jonas Mekasen egunerokoa atzemateko ebidentziarekin/nostalgiarekin.
Beraren piezen hegazkortasuna gorabehera, bada inolako gehiegikeriarik gabeko forma eta
orbanen bilaketa bat, eta efektismorik gabeko marrazki autonomoaren espezifikotasunaren
aldeko hautu bat.
marrazkiaren arteko sei pieza hibridok audioa baztertzen dute beren marrazketa-izaera
nabarmentzeko. Irudia mutu geratzen da, isilik, barneko meditazioaren eta kutsu taoistaren
oihartzunekin. Esan liteke asmoa aurkeztea dela, komentatzea baino gehiago.
Irudiak kontzientzia-fluxua izateko interes hori, bisitariak haiekin elkarreraginean aritu
eta bereganatzeko interes hori are agerikoagoa da Sentir es un pensamiento extravagante
instalazioan; izan ere, zinema esperimentalaren eta etxeko filmaketen erreferentziekin, ikuslea
proiekzio-zurrunbilo batean sartzen du, bata bestearen gainetik jarritako tul-geruza batzuen
gainean, zeinetatik ikuslea ibil baitaiteke noraezean. Autoreak berak azaltzen duenez: tula
proiekziorako azalera bezala erabiltzea, irudia atxiki eta aldi berean pasatzen uzten dion azalera
bezala, belo gisa erabiltzea da, modu sotilean aldatzen baitu atzean geratzen dena ikusteko
dugun modua. Piezaren audioa ere astindu deseroso bat da, ikuslea abandonu onirikotik esnatu
nahi duena, orainaldiaz jabetu dadin.
Beste alde batetik, oraina aurkezteko ahaleginagatik, iheserako trikimailuak ezkutatzen
saihesten da, instalazioa ahalbidetzen duten elementuak agerian jarriz. Bada, erabaki horren
ordenatuan ipintzen baitira animazioen fotogramak, zirriborroak eta pigmentu-flaskoak.
Animazioen irudi-ehunduren collagearen aurrean, hemen mahaia apropos dago ordenatuta,
armen edo erreminten erakusmahai bat balitz bezala.
Bukatzeko, artistak bere marrazkietarako erabiltzen dituen paper-bilkariak bistaratzen ditut,
animazioaren motorra abiatu aurretik, eta sismografo bitxi baten erregistro-danborra dakarkit
gogora arimaren lurrikarena.

Every work of art needs to be understood not only as something rendered, but also as a
certain handling of the ineffable. In the greatest art, one is always aware of things that
cannot be said (rules of decorum), of the contradiction between expression and the presence of the inexpressible. Stylistic devices are also techniques of avoidance. The most
potent elements in a work of art are, often, its silence. Susan Sontag
I have the power to seduce anyone Iris Murdoch
The first feeling I had when I went into Mireya Martns work in depth is the feeling of waking
up in a house that I couldnt remember having entered. Waking up one morning in someone
elses house and wandering aimlessly around rooms packed with personal things without feeling uncomfortable, and even recognising myself in certain items in the personal disorder of
someone elses life: a feeling that quickly turns to attraction, vertigo and embarrassment.
Another recurring effect when I approach her work, particularly the animated pieces, is the sense of getting right inside the subject of a poem, or into the very heart of a song, and becoming
shrouded in the depths of the music, by the whispers of a lyric that you cant understand at first,
and that you end up deciphering and making it up in your own way.
Mireya chooses drawing, video images and installations: Technologies and materials that prevent pieces from solidifying. She prefers fragility and suggestiveness to be the substance of her
work. The line, the paper with its textures, and the moving image are ideal means of ensuring
that neither her motivations nor the effects of her thought patterns are closed off.
At the same time, as occurs with other artists with a feminist commitment, this decision may
also involve a political aspect, as abandoning the major genres (painting and sculpture) and
favouring the fringes of artistic practice allows her to shake off the burden of a History of Art
that women have been excluded from as authors. This preference for more fleeting hybrid
media that blend drawing, animation and video, that expand in space, link her with the work
of creative artists like Pipilotti Rist, Susi Jirkuff, or ShahziaSikander to mention just a few of
those who share her interest for personal narrative and music.
Mireyas pieces have a special feel that makes them float in an ambiguous area somewhere
between the inside and the outside. Inside and outside dreams, inside and outside thoughts,
inside and outside desire: in this way she desists from imposing her own discoveries and narratives on the viewer, so that we are the ones who add a different perspective. Inside and outside
the body; a body that is limitless, on the fringes, that is and yet isnt animal, flower, bones, or
internal organ. A kind of pantheism all of her own.
The artists animated work, that blends drawing and photography, colour and textures, alludes
to nature, fragmentation and the memory of the body in its chain of transformations into animals (such as the owl or snake) fruit and landscapes. However as a counterpoint to this deliberate iconographic disorder, the titles of the artists pieces are just another language item: ironic
literary reference points that articulate what we first thought was ineffable, inenarrable. With
hints of delightfully decadent headlines, of dialogue from cult films or philosophical quotes,
BilbaoArte
these sentences qualify and comment on the images on display: The autumn I have is the one
that Ive lost; I was no longer myself, I was someone else, and for this very reason, once again
I was myself, I got lost for a few moments from feeling I was alive; I had turned into an interior; Feeling is an extravagant thought
In the house taken over that we have mysteriously entered, light bathes the furniture and the
piles of clothes in some rooms, whereas in others, we need to go in and fumble around in the
dark, and perform a juggling act so we dont bump into the corner of a table or trip over piles of
books. We try not to fall over, but inevitably sometimes collisions occur: this is the darker, more
sinister side of her sound landscapes, the side that refers to the unconscious. The dismembered
body that reflects holistic self-healing and impulses; the hip, the head and the heart start to talk
about fears about the fragile nature of existence, about the passage of time, about how the
artist negotiates between talking and keeping silent. A feeling that may combine Sylvia Plaths
inner suffering with Jonas Mekass evidence/nostalgia of capturing the mundane.
Despite the volatile nature of her pieces, there is a search for shapes and markings, cleansed
of any kind of excess with a commitment to the specificity of autonomous drawing, devoid of
any sensationalism. In the installation, Yo me haba convertido en un interior, (I had turned
into an interior) six hybrid pieces, that are somewhere between drawings and animation, dispense with audio in order to stress their nature as drawings. The image remains silent, with
hints of Taoist-like inner meditation. It is as if it aimed to present something rather than to
comment.
This interest for letting the images be a stream of consciousness that interact with visitors
so they can make them their own becomes even more obvious in the installation Sentir es
un pensamiento extravagante(feeling is an extravagant thought), where with references to
experimental cinema and domestic footage, the viewer is engulfed in a whirlpool of screenings
that are shown on various consecutive layers of tulle that you can walk about among. As the
author herself explains: the use of tulle as a screening surface, that retains the image while at
the same time letting it pass through, acts as a veil that subtly modifies the way we see what
remains behind this. The audio for the piece also provides an uncomfortable kind of disturbance that aims to shake the viewer out of their dream-like indifference and make them accept
the present.
On the other hand, in her desire to present the here and now, she doesnt bother to hide the escapist tricks that reveal the features that make the installation possible. The most emblematic
case of this decision is the installation, Sin ttulo, (Untitled) where the animation stills, sketches and the bottles of pigments are neatly displayed. Compared to the collage of textures of
animated images, here the desk is quite deliberately tidy as if this was an exhibitor of weapons
or tools.
To finish, I can visualise the huge rolls of paper that the artist draws on, before starting the
animation motor, and the recording drum on an unusual seismograph comes to mind for
earthquakes of the soul.
