Antoniok egiten duenean aurkezten duen horretatik interesgarri iruditzen zaidan beste gauza bat da zenit-espazioa aurkezteko duen modu guztiz berezia. Txoriaren ikuspegiaren gauza, amildegira erortzeko une horretan, hemen agertzen da... baina ez da deskribatzen maparen edo, okerrago, mapatzearen ideia kontuan hartuz. Zenit-ikuspegi hori maparekiko bizipenetik sortzen da, mapa forma mental eta esperientzien espazio gisa hartuta. Maparen ideia, leku gisa. Bada, errepikapena planoarekin engainatzeko kontu honetan, pausotxo bat harago, eta horixe da garrantzitsua eta hortxe dago arazoaren muina. Antonioren egiten aritzea ez da emaitza bat, baizik eta txikitasunean sentitzearen esperientzia, eta zapaltzen duten magnitudeekin planteatzen duen harreman horretatik (gauza handi gehiegi), zerbait oso limurtzailea, sotila agertzen da. Hala, hasieran, sartu gabe begiratu bat eginez, ez dago, txikitxoa baita, baina gelditzen bazara, sortzen da, badago, agertzen da. Minimotik maximoari aurre egin nahi izatea da, esperientzia forma bihurtu nahi izatea. Hori errepikatzea da, oinez ibiltzea bezala. Hegazkina den eta mendia den zerbait. Katalogatzea den eta deskatalogatzea den zerbait. Agertzea den eta desagertzea den zerbait. Eta hemen ere badago artista, gauzen, uneen, zerbait den horretako egoeren egile moduan, hala izateari uzteko zorian. Eztabaidagai izan genituen gauzetako beste bat izan zen erakusketarako zein pieza aukeratu, nahiz eta lan hori ez zegoen testu bat idazteko hasierako egitekoaren barruan. Baina funtsean bai; izan ere, erakusketa bat egitea testu bat idaztea bezala da; pieza batek ez du zertan zerbait kontatu, baina erakusketa batek kontatzen du zerbait. Behintzat, asmo bat azaltzen du. Zer egin nahi duzun erakusketa honekin, hori litzateke galdera. Beraz, Antoniok, galdera horri erantzunez, litekeena da pentsatzea pauso bat aurrera egitea eta zenbait haustura ipintzea ezin hobeki deskribaturik dagoen eta egiten duena egiten uzten dion corpus teoriko horren guztiaren erdian. Suntsitzea pentsatuz, baina artearen gauzek izan behar duten -tzeko zorian egoeran ere pentsatuz. Hori funtsezkoa da egiten dugun guztian, une bakoitza baliatu behar dugu suntsitzeko, hortik eraikitzen jarraitzeko. Elkarrizketa horretan, Antoniori gonbit egin nion gauzak hauts zitzan, egiten ari zena har zezan eta atzekoz aurrera pentsa zezan, buelta emanda, inolako bitartekorik gabe. Bere izaki esanekoekin deseroso egoteko modua bila zezan. Zalantza pitz zezan. Beharbada, Antonio, hain zuzen ere, horixe ari da pentsatzen bere lanen berrikuspen horrekin, zeukana, egin duena, egiten aritu dena hartu, dena elkarrekin jarri, urrutitik begiratu, mendira igo, maldan behera abiatu, motorrik gabeko hegaldi batean, eta orain, une honetan, egiten ari denarekin zerikusia duen zerbait planteatu.

Antonio Barea Altitude jaitsiera izugarria, abiaduraren murrizketa esponentziala, lurreratze-trenen eszenaratzea. Lurreratzea bikaina izan dadin, horrez guztiaz gain, jarraipen zorrotza egin behar zaio hurbiltzeko, planeatzeko, makurtzeko eta lurreratze-lekua identifikatzeko patroiari. Landing-ak bitarteko izan nahi du, metonimiak, aireontziek berezko duten prozesu eta dinamikek eta haien ekintza-testuinguruek babesturiko jardunaren bidez. Mugimendua indar motor gisa, interkonexio gisa eta produkzio-estrategia gisa erabili. Formen disfuntzioa, errepikapena eta modulazioa. Aireratzeak alde batera uzten du jatorriaren, paisaiaren eta maparen berrinterpretazioa, eta helmuga jakin bat bilatzen du, hegaldia konplexua eta ezegonkorra dela jakinik. Eserleku etzangarrietan jesarrita eta segurtasun-uhala jarrita, bidaiariak ezerezera amiltzen du begirada leihatilatik, eta, hala, esperientzia eliptiko bat lortzen du, zerumuga galdu eta berriz aurkitzearena, gorabeherek eraginda, aire-lasterrarena eta turbulentziarena. Mugimenduaren grabitaterik ezak apaldu egiten du abiaduraren irmotasuna, bai eta fuselaje pisutsuarena eta motorren zarata burrunbatsuarena ere. Ezegonkortasuna fidagarria da. 30.000 oinetara eta orduko 900 kilometroko gurutzaldi-abiaduran, bidaiariak jatorriaren berri jasotzen du, argiro gogoratzen du abiapuntua, eta, zalantzarik gabe, horrek lagundu egiten dio bidaiaren, mugimenduaren intentzionalitatea ulertzen. Beraz, Mapa ikusezinak esku-bagajearen eduki osagarri moduko bat da, low cost konpainiek ezarritako estandarren gainpisu bat. Landing-aren aurrekari bat. Mapa ikusezinak, batetik, mapa edo kartografia bat ez berrinterpretatzeko ihesaldiaren eszenaratzea da, eta, bestetik, miniaturarekin eta miniatura hori kudeatzen duen aireko ikuspegiarekin bat egiten den unearen eszenaratzea. Horren oinarria espazioak, perimetroak eta formak etengabe zalantzan jartzea da. Zuzeneko harremana ezartzen du datuen bistaratzearekin, ikusizko poesiarekin eta gizakia aukera berriekin eta pertzeptzio-konplexutasunekin aurrez aurre jartzen duten bestelako diziplinekin. Borgesen El rigor de la ciencia laneko inperioaren katografoek berresten dute mapak lurraldearen aurrean duen gainbalioa, 1:1 mapa egikaritzean huts eginez. Historiaurreko gizakiak agertzen ditu gatazka berriak irudiarekin, irudikapenarekin eta labar-pinturaren eta testuinguru-egoera zehatzen arteko identifikazioarekin. Bachelard-ek egiten dio erreferentzia, La potique de lespace lanean, 1851ko Diccionario de botnica cristiana-ri, eskala-sistemak ezartzeko eta miniatura identifikatzeko: Lau lorezilak eskuilatxo horien modukoak dira. Nadarrek miniaturizatzen du Petit-Bictre-ren hiri paisaia, 1858ko aireko bere argazkiarekin. Edo geolokalizazioko aplikazio informatikoek eskaintzen dizkiote erabiltzaileari paisaiaren eta lurraldearen irudikapenak, erabiltzailea jolasean baitabil jaitsierarekin eta igoerarekin, hurrenez hurren datuen dentsitatea handitu eta gutxitzen duten mugimenduekin. Hegan egiteko, bidaiatzeko eta aireko ikuspegia, miniatura, lurraldea eta paisaia esperimentatzeko jolas bat, Felix Baumgartner-ek 2012ko urriaren 14an egin zuena. Hori guztia kremaileraz, giltzarrapoz eta plastifikatu azkengabez ixten da. Bagajea berretsirik, onarturik eta prest dago eskala ugariko bidaia bati ekiteko. Baina bidaiari ekiteak berekin dakar espazio/denb orazko plangintza ustekabeko bat, abiapuntuaren eta helmugaren arteko batasunaren sintoma gisa. Erremediorik gabeko prestatze sentipen batek katalogazioz, aurreikuspenez eta bideen eta espazioen ordenantza zorrotzen pean bete beharreko arauz betetzen ditu denbora eta ekintza. Espazio horiek hegaldiaren atariko moduko batzuk dira, mugimendura bideratuta daude, eta antzeko identitatea duten moduluek, formek eta asmo kalkatuek eratzen dituzte. Espazio horietan, harmonia ederrean dauden hainbat koreografia entropiko burutzen dira, eta, aldi berean, koreografia horiek baldintzatzen dituzte, aireontzien bidez elkarrekin konektaturiko aireportu guztietan, antzeko izaera duten engranajeak eta ekintza-ereduak. Check-in, Boarding and Cabin crew closing. Bidaia hastera doa, a few minutes to landing.

Aterrizando
Check-in, Boarding and Cabin crew closing. Comienza del viaje, a few minutes to landing.

Eduardo Hurtado The question of doing comes up in every conscious process. Doing something implies both a physical and a mental act. And working in art means to reside in this state. Being or existing across an interval of time. To be doing is the work itself. And to be doing can mean many things. The question of effort, as based on a formal recognition of the productive process, may come in here. Whether through a reply (the doing) or a rejoinder (doing nothing, or not doing anything productive). Doing nothing is also doing. Even doing nothing useful is doing. It may even be that doing nothing useful, as opposed to what we understand by work, could be the most effective political weapon. To be doing, in a work of art, could be to not be doing anything... or nothing apparently useful. I am thinking about things like sculpting, walking, looking or endlessly folding the same element until it breaks up completely. Or thinking about the whole process of breathing, and that moment of tension that comes out of nowhere the instant you start to notice the air going in and out. The question of non-productivity keeps things spinning round, from the post-romantics right through to the grittiest street activism. Repeating something, like a procedure, can lead to that conscious mental state where breathing becomes voluntary. Repeating becomes a gesture at that moment. And depending on what has triggered the event, it may actually turn into a political act. This is what started coming into my head as I spoke to Antonio about his exhibition in BilbaoArte and what he was working on. Things somehow basic to tackling a work of art, like how you gnaw away on something until you find a way in. Antonio was going on about a whole pile of things, and ideas, that might come from certain theoretical devices he was working on... and I kept answering him, surrounded by all his stuff, that what he was telling me wasnt the main thing. I didnt mean that all those theoretical mechanisms and analytical systems werent important, as they are. Discourse is important, though for art, at times, it is not the most important thing. It is quite clear that where Im coming from has an incredible force when you come to act. And that it is important if not fundamental to have a firm set of foundations underpinning whatever you have in your hands... but all these parameters are theory, and theory, as such, is something that does and should change over time. On the other hand, the outcome of art processes does not change, which is what links it somehow with the symbolic at least as I understand it and we must be careful therefore how we mesh work with discourse and discourse with ideas. In Antonios case, I thought about this idea of non-productiveness - in a certain sense there is also something political about making theories in the conscious act of doing, doing, and doing, and repeating the same thing over, over and over again. One of the things which most interests me about Antonios work is the actual execution of the module. It is all about a meticulous, manual craft (here we come back to breathing and non-productivity) which we can call warm. Still-warm work crafted by hand. Small-scale, manual work. Small as a value, in a world overloaded with big things. Repetition creating space to achieve that certain state of form or formula and gelling it all together as an image. We were arguing about this in the workshop, about whether what Antonio does is sculpture or image. For me the process it is based on is sculpture (in as far as repetition can become political) while the outcome is not, since it is not linked to the specific nature that sculpture has for me. It was an image of sculpture, or rather an image of the process which led Antonio towards sculpture. Precisely or also through the de-activation of form by its repetition. I understood that this was the bedrock of Antonios work, in relation to the module, operability and vision.

Another interesting aspect of Antonios work which comes up as he does/makes is his particular way of presenting the aerial space. The birds eye view which pans out as you leap into the void though it is not delineated like a map, or worse, actually mapped out . This overhead vision springs from inhabiting the map, the map as a mental shape and space for experience. The idea of the map as place. He is going one step beyond in this idea of blurring repetition with the plane, towards the most important thing, the heart of the matter. Antonios doing/making something is not a result, but an experience of feeling the small things, and there is something very subtle and seductive about his relation with the magnitudes crushing down on him (too many big things). Thus at first glance, without going in, he is not there, as he is so tiny, only to be seen if you stop and look. It is something about wanting to confront the most with the least, or wanting to grind experience into form. Repeating as in walking on and on. Something that is an aircraft and a mountain. Classifying and de-classifying. Appearing and disappearing. And here we have the artist too as a maker of things, of moments, of those states of something which is on the point of no longer being itself. Another of the things we discussed was the choice of pieces for the show, despite this falling outside the original remit of writing a text. When it comes down to it though, doing an exhibition is the same as writing a text, as in the same way that a piece does not have to tell us anything, an exhibition actually does tell us something. Or it reveals an intention at least. The question would be what you are seeking to do with the exhibition. Which Antonio might answer by stepping up and placing something fractured amongst the perfectly laid out theoretical body of work which allows him to do what he does. Thinking of destruction, but also of that state on the point of which art should aspire to. This is fundamental to what we do, and we should take every opportunity to destroy something so that it may continue to be built. During this conversation I invited Antonio to break things, to take up the things he was doing and think them out the other way round, upside down, without any outside interference. Seek a way out of the comfort zone with his docile creations. Sow the doubt. Maybe what Antonio is seeking with this revision of his work is precisely this, to seize the work he did, that hes done, that hes been doing, fuse it all together, look at it from afar, from up on the mountain-top, and free-fall downhill towards what hes doing right now... Landing
Antonio Barea A sharp drop in altitude, slowing down, the undercarriage sliding out. Slotting into the approach guidelines, gliding, tilting, identifying the landing spot, this is what makes a perfect landing. Landing seeks to intercede in the processes and dynamics of aircraft and their context by means of antonym. Using transit as a driving force, as an inter-connection and productive strategy. The dysfunction of form, its repetition and modulation. Taking off from a re-interpretation of origin, of landscape and map, searching for a specific destination in full knowledge of the complexity and instability of flight. Sitting back in reclining seats and fastened in by safety-belts, passengers gaze through the window, plummeting up and down through the elliptical experience of finding and losing the horizon, and jerking through air currents and turbulence. Lack of gravity counter-balanced by the rotundity of speed and heavy fuselage, together with the deafening drone of the engines. Making instability feel reliable. 30,000 feet up and at a cruising speed of 900 km per hour, the passenger thinks back to leaving, clearly remembering the departure, and helping to comprehend the intentionality of the journey, or transit. In this way, Invisible Maps acts as an extra piece of hand luggage, a piece of excess baggage outside the limits set by the low cost carriers. As an antecedent to Landing. Invisible maps stages on the one hand the flight towards a reinterpretation of a map or chart, and on the other a re-encounter with the miniature and aerial view it lays out. It is based on a constant questioning of space, perimeters and form. It sets up a direct link between disciplines such as data visualisation and visual poetry, which make mankind face new horizons and perceptive complexities. The ascendancy of map over actual territory is corroborated by the imperial charts in Borgess The rigour of science, complete with its error of execution in the 1:1 map. Then prehistoric man takes issue with image, through the representation and identification of cave paintings with specific contextual situations. Later on Bachelards The poetry of space refers to the 1851 Dictionary of Christian botany to set up a system of miniature scales. The four elements are like little yellow brushes. Nadar then miniaturises the urban landscape in Petit-Bictre, with an aerial photograph from 1858. Or computerised geo-location applications are brought in offering users representations of landscape and territory which flirt with descent and ascent, in movements triggering higher or lower data density. A game about flying, travelling and experimenting with aerial views, miniatures, territory and landscape, carried out by Flix Baumgartner on the 14th October 2012. All this is encased in zips, padlocks, and endless plastic film. Luggage ready to corroborate and play its own part in a journey of numerous stops. Setting off implies a random time/space plan, however, as a symptom of the union between departure and arrival points. The irredeemable sense of getting ready floods time and action with lists, predictions and guidelines to be carried out from strict schedules of resources and spaces. Spaces which act as antechambers to the flight, destined to be passed through and inhabited by modules of similar identity, modelled on the same shapes and intentions. A sort of entropic choreography is played out in these spaces in perfect harmony, setting off similar interlocking patterns of action across all the airports as they are spun together by aircraft. Check-in, Boarding and Cabin crew closing. Setting off, a few minutes to landing.
