4. Verbo To be - 'Ser' y 'Estar'
El verbo to be se puede traducir como ser o como estar en espaol. El Ingls slo tiene un verbo para
los dos significados.
Nota: La forma infinitiva de los verbos en ingls siempre empieza con to.
La conjugacin del verbo to be en el presente es la siguiente:

El cero en ingls
Para decir "0" en ingls se utilizan las siguientes palabras dependiendo del contexto:
zero. Se utiliza "zero" para la mayora de contextos
Today, the temperature is zero degrees
La temperatura es hoy 0 grados
oh (letra "o"). Se utiliza para la cifra 0 (no para el nmero), habitualmente para
nmeros de telfono, habitaciones de hotel, etc. Por ejemplo la habitacin "502" se dira:
"five-oh-two".
nil. Se usa para deportes. Ejemplo: "Valencia beats Chelsea 1-nil" (el Valencia gana al
Chelsea 1 a 0).
love. nicamente se utiliza en tenis. Trmino proveniente del francs "luf" (que
significa huevo).
nought. Sinnimo de "zero" pero nicamente usado en Reino Unido e Irlanda.
naught. Sinnimo de "zero".
Los nmeros en ingls no tienen plural: two hundred, two
thousand, two million
En espaol la construccin de los nmeros tiene su complejidad, dado que los plurales
juegan un papel para algunos nmeros:
cien dos cientos
mil dos mil
un milln dos millones
En ingls es ms sencillo:
one hundred two hundred
one thousand two thousand
one million two million
El problema del billn en ingls
En ingls la palabra billon (billn) significa 1000 millones, mientras que en espaol (y
para la mayora de pases de habla no inglesa) un billn es un milln de millones. Esta
situacin provoca elevados errores en traducciones. As que hay que tener cuidado.
Como se ve en la tabla siguiente el problema no afecta slo al billn sino tambin a
todas las unidades mayores:

Al sistema de numeracin donde mil de millones es un billn se le denomina sistema de
numeracin de escala corta y se utiliza en todos los pases de habla inglesa y Brasil.
El sistema de escala larga se usa en Amrica (con excepcin de los pases de habla
inglesa y Brasil) y en Europa occidental (a excepcin de Reino Unido e Irlanda).

Abreviatura de los nmeros ordinales
El espaol se coloca simplemente el smbolo de grado despus de un nmero para
indicar que el ordinal en lugar de cardinal.

En ingls es un poco ms difcil, se aade:
-st. Si el nmero acaba en 1 (abreviatura de first). [A excepcin que acabe en 11]
-nd. Si el nmero acaba en 2 (abreviatura de second) [A excepcin que acabe en 12]
-rd. Si el nmero acaba en 3 (abreviatura de third) [A excepcin que acabe en 13]
-th. En los dems casos.
Las Fracciones (Fractions)
Para construir las fracciones existen 2 posibilidades o bien se usa los ordinales para el
denominador o bien se usa entre el numerador y denominador la palabra over.

PARA QU SIRVE?
En esta parte veremos cmo expresar preferencias en ingls, es decir, cmo expresar lo que nos gusta y lo
que no. Vemos un ejemplo para ver a qu hacemos referencia.

A QU HACEMOS REFERENCIA?

Cuando hablamos de 'Likes & Dislikes' debemos tener en cuenta que podemos hablar de cosas que nos
gustan, pero tambin de accionesque nos gustan. Debemos tener esto en cuenta para formar las diferentes
oraciones.


CMO SE USAN?

COSAS: Si quieres indicar que te gusta alguna cosa, lugar o persona podemos utilizar el verbo 'like'.

SUJETO + VERBO DE PREFERENCIA + RESTO DE FRASE

Me gusta la msica.
I like music.

Tambin podemos negar el verbo principal e indicar lo contrario, es decir, que no te gusta algo,
alguien o algn lugar.

No me gusta la msica.
I don't like music.


ACCIONES: Si queremos indicar que nos gusta hacer algo (alguna accin), debemos poner el verbo
de esa accin en '-ing'.

SUJETO + VERBO DE PREFERENCIA + VERBO EN -ING + RESTO DE FRASE

Me gusta escuchar msica.
I like listening to music.

Tambin podemos negar el verbo principal e indicar lo contrario, es decir, que no te gusta realizar
una accin.

No me gusta escuchar msica.
I don't like listening to music.


CULES SON?

Los verbos ms comunes para expresar preferencias son los siguientes.

love I love (listening to) music.
like I like (listening to) music.
enjoy I enjoy (listening to) music.
dislike I dislike (listening to) music.
hate I hate (listening to) music.


QU DEBO RECORDAR?

Lo importante que debemos tener en cuenta es lo siguiente.

Debemos tener en cuenta que la tercera persona de los verbos termina en 's' (I.e. She likes [listening
to] music.).

Recuerda que si hablamos de alguna accin utilizamos dos verbos, y el segundo verbo debe ir en -
ing.

Adems, ten en cuenta que podemos utilizar esta estructura en afirmativa, negativa o interrogativa.
