The art collection of the Foundation is made up of the works of past grant holders. The Estaciones (Stations) exhibition arises from this heritage as the visible embodiment of a unique and seminal artistic experience. We are talking about a very singular art collection consisting of works and projects originating in Bilbao Arte. They were conceived and constructed here. They acquired identity here and remain as a reference of the creative process of all the grant holders who have given meaning to, felt and are part of the his- tory of Bilbao Arte. These works have a double value for us because, being in themselves valid proposals, they accept the responsi- bility to relate, to announce, what the artists were like who were here dur- ing those times and what terrain they were exploring. In some way our his- tory is written in each and every one of these works. As for the actual content of the Es- taciones exhibition, it represents the personal and creative reading of the curator, Petra Joos, Director of Mu- seum Activities of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Oroimen horien atzean ezkutatzen den esanahia erakusteaz gain, artelanen eta beren egileen, ekintzaren eta pentsamen- duaren arteko elkarrekintz berri baten tes- tuingurua islatzen dute, ezin zitekeenez bestela, sormen artistikoaren jaioterria den espazio honetan. Hori dela eta, hitzordu honekin bate- ra hainbat topaketa egin nahi dira, he- men bildutako artistetako batzuekin. Paradigma desberdinen pean deitutako topaketak izango dira eta horien bitartez elkarrizketak partekatu ahal izango dira. Batetik, gure alderdi intelektualak perfekzioa bilatzen du, eta, erkidego-mailan, lege, pentsa- mendu-sistema eta sentimendu bidez adierazten dugu ideal hori, eta, bestetik, gure izaerak (eta inguratzen gaituenak) osotasuna eta asetasuna ukatzen dizkigu eta bakoitzaren patuaren azken ba- kardadera eramaten gaitu. Nire lanean zoriontasuna narrazio inplizitua da, ia ezkutukoa, eta sarritan errepikatzen di- ren sintoma tematiko desberdinen bidez islatzen da. banakoak gizartearekin di- tuen harremanei buruz hausnartzen dut, generoa, memoria, indarkeria, egitura hierarkiakoak eta historia bezalako gaiez baliatuz. L ooking back at my work in recent years I have reached the conclu- sion that the thematic thread running through it is happiness. For me the concept of happiness is the great- est expression of the neurosis of human beings. On the one hand our intellect as- pires to the perfection of completeness, an ideal that we express at community level through laws, systems of thought and feelings, and on the other hand our nature (and that of those around us) renders is incapable of fullness, satiation and condemns us to the ultimate soli- tude of our individual fates. In my work happiness is an implicit, almost covert, narrative that manifests itself through a number of recurrent thematic symp- toms: I think about the links between individuals and society through issues such as gender, remembrance, violence, hierarchical structures and history. Deep down, my work is an optimistic, humorous expression of the impos- sibility of attaining happiness. Hence the paradox, the juxtaposition and the coexistence of opposites are deter- minant factors in my work, because I believe that art is a possibilistic incar- nation of the incapability of human beings to resolve the paradox of their own existence. I n her stunning photographs, Ixone Sdaba names a mythical place, Mount Cithaeron, where the Bacchants, the wild women, impose their disorder. This is where they tore Pentheus apart piece-by-piece, seduced by Dionysus, the other who is, to a great extent, the same, the one who drives and compromises the vision. The long- ing of the voyeur and the mothers pos- sessed state will lead to the horror of a head on a pike held by the one who in ull senses broughL llfe lL ls slgnlcunL I repeat, how Ixone Sdaba resorts to a tale of fury and violence for the setting of her photographic micro-tales, which as I have already mentioned, revolve unceas- ingly around the subject of twinship. We are conceived as twins, but almost all of us are born unique. From the start, we look upon ourselves as twins, but then one of us vanishes. Together, the ini- tial twins face primitive forces and clear themselves a space in this world in which we will be able to tame horses, work the land, survive the lightning; and then one devours the other. The twin that disap- pears leaves behind a body that is as dry and thin as papyrus. Y et that same undertaking of look- ing, of discovering what is ex- traordinary in the ordinary, may be turned towards the search for new forms through or in our surroundings. Some critics have noted that the part played by the camera in this process is extractive, rather than constructive. It is no longer the outmoded myth of ar- tistic expression understood as bring- ing out something that is inside the art- ist (the spirit), but instead of isolating, combining, magnifying or minimising common forms to draw out the extraor- dinary in them. The programme of that process was already mentioned in da Vincis Treatise on Painting, in which he referred to the possibilities of discover- ing new worlds provided by any wall - a moss-covered medium.
