First let's start knowing what are variables.

 Variable
• In algebra, besides using numbers and our basic operations (addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division) an unknown value is called a variable.

Variable = is a symbol or a letter that takes the place of an unknown number.

• En álgebra, además de usar números y nuestras operaciones básicas (suma, resta,

multiplicación y división) un valor desconocido se llama variable.

Variable = es un símbolo o una letra que toma el lugar de un número desconocido.

To calculate an algebraic expression, substitute the variable for a numerical value and simplify.

Para calcular una expresión algebraica, sustituye la variable por un valor numérico y simplifica.

Example 1: Addition Example 2: Subtraction

Calculate x + 8, when x = 2 Calculate 12 – y, when y = 4
Substitute the x with the 2 Substitute y = 4
X+8=? 12 – y = ?
2 + 8 = 10 12 – 4 = 8
