Strategy 1: Common Understandings about Reading

INTRODUCTION:
 Reading is the active process of understanding print and graphic texts.
 Effective readers know that when they read, what they read is supposed to make sense.
 Effective readers monitor their understanding, and when they lose the meaning of what
they are reading, they often unconsciously select and use a reading strategy (such as
rereading or asking questions) that will help them reconnect with the meaning of the text.
 Effective readers use strategies to understand what they read before, during, and after
reading.

Read the following text and answer the questions.

1. Antes de leer el texto:

a) No hice nada y sólo empecé a leer.
b) Miré las pistas visuales (dibujos, gráficos, títulos y subtítulos).
c) Pensé, “no sé inglés, así es que no voy a entender mucho”.
d) Le di una lectura rápida para ver de qué se trataba.

2. Mientras leía el texto:

a) Habían palabras que no sabía, y eso me dificultó la comprensión.
b) Traté de entender el significado de las palabras desconocidas por el contexto.

e) Tengo una visión crítica del texto, (estoy de acuerdo o en desacuerdo con las ideas, me
es útil lo que leí, voy a buscar más información, lo voy a comentar con alguien.
