Why has the Brazilian government in the 20th and 21st centuries sought to develop a world-class
manufacturing industry?
How could Brazil transform its non-competitive industrial forces into competitive ones?
On ethics: Although President Rousseff’s critics accuse her of ignoring Brazil’s lack of
comparative advantage for manufacturing, its supporters argue that its policies force the country
to reduce its dependence on foreign manufactured goods. If you were to participate in this
debate, which side would you be on?

As an executive of an Australian-based multinational interested in undertaking FDI in emerging

economies would you be interested in investing in Turkey among the world’s options?
Using data from the most recent year, what is the flow of China FDI in to your Country? What is
the stock of China´s in your country? Relative to other countries whose multinationals undertake
FDI in your country? What is China´s ranking-in both flow and stock relative to other countries?
Compare your country’s FDI flow (in the most recent year) and stock in China with China’s FDI flow
and stock with your country Which is the largest? Why?
Why has China’s OFDI received such sensational (but often unfounded) press reports about its
scale and scope?
Identify the largest FDI project (in terms of dollar amount) undertaken by Chinese multinationals
in your country. Assess their advantages and disadvantages and consider whether the advantages
for the host economy (i.e., that of your country) outweigh the disadvantages.
Is the WTO becoming less important and are regional and bilateral agreements the wave of the
future? Are there advantages of a bilateral agreement such as KORUS over WTO agreements?
While trade theories generally support free trade, political realities claim that trade barriers still
exist. ' How does KORUS address the realities of international trade?
Some argue that regional or bilateral trade agreements are blocks to global trade agreements.
Others argue that such balkanization of world trade represents a series of obstacles to
international trade. Is KORUS a promoter or an obstacle to trade?
How do formal institutions facilitate or hinder trade and investment? Provide examples of KORUS
Read President Obama’s National Export Initiative Online to what extent did KORUS contribute to
the main objective of this initiative?
