Hay muchas maneras de hablar del pasado en inglés, pero el pasado simple es la forma
más común. Usamos el pasado simple para acciones completas en el pasado. En el
pasado simple hay verbos regulares y verbos irregulares.

Sentence Structure Rules


There are three possibilities of writing any sentence or a statement.

1) Simple statements

[Subject + verb (ed) + object]

2) Negative statements

[Subject + did not + verb + object]

3) Question statements

[Did + subject + verb + object + ?]

Examples of simple past tense in sentences

Lesson 3: Past Continuous.
The past continuous is made from the past tense of the verb be and the –ing form of a
verb:

USE. We use the past continuous to talk about the past:

➢ for something which happened before and after another action:

The children were doing their homework when I got home.

Compare: The children did their homework when (= after) I got home.

This use of the past continuous is very common at the beginning of a story:

The other day I was waiting for a bus when …


Last week, as I was driving to work, …

➢ for something that happened before and after a specific time:


It was eight o'clock. I was writing a letter.

Compare: At eight o'clock I wrote (= started writing) some letters.

LESSON 1: EXPRESSING ACTIONS THAT STARTED IN


THE PAST AND ARE STILL HAPPENING.

We use “the present perfect” for the following contexts.

The present perfect is used to describe


● An action or situation that started in the past and continues in the present. I have lived in Bristol since 1984 (=
and I still do.)
● An action performed during a period that has not yet finished. She has been to the cinema twice this week (=
and the week isn't over yet.)

called, reported speech.

“We use reported speech when we want to tell someone what others said.
Reported speech is when we tell someone what another person said. To do this, we
can use direct speech or indirect speech. direct speech: 'I work in a bank,' said Daniel.

There are some rules you need to follow, these will be explained down below.
