Important Concepts
Tea Bag rocket

Air is a gaseous, transparent, odourless and tasteless substance that

envelops the Earth and forms the atmosphere; it consists mainly of
oxygen and nitrogen, and of varying amounts of argon, water vapour
and carbon dioxide.
.

Fire is the heat and light produced by combustion. Fire is born from a
chemical oxidation reaction and involves the generation of flames
and the emanation of water vapor and carbon dioxide. Fire is
arguably the visual manifestation of the aforementioned combustion
process.
.

Convection currents are the result of heating by temperature

gradients. Warm materials are lighter, so they rise, while cold materials
are heavier (denser) and therefore sink.

Project Development
Tea Bag Rocket

It is a small experiment to illustrate thermal changes and how to

transform a tea bag into a mino-rocket. In this experiment we will
simulate the same effect that allows hot-air balloons to rise.

As we know, because the hot air molecules are less dense and
convection currents are involved whenever there is a temperature
difference and a fluid.
Development of the Expereriment
Observation

In this experiment we are going to make sure that the hot air rises, it is
the phenomenon of convection of the air. Air is a fluid and as such it
behaves.

Since hot air is less heavy than cold "floats" above it, and so hot air
balloons that are heated with burners can float and carry passengers
to distant places.

Convection is the transmission of heat based on the real movement of

the molecules of a substance: here a fluid that may be gas or liquid
intervenes.

Convective heat transmission can only occur in fluids in which by natural motion (the fluid extracts heat from
the hot zone and changes densities) or forced circulation (through a fan the fluid moves), particles can
move by transporting heat without disrupting the physical continuity of the body. Here are a few examples
of convection:

1. Heat transfer from a stove.

2. Hot air balloons, which are kept in the air by hot air. If it cools down, immediately the balloon begins to fall.
3. When the water vapor clouds the windows of a bath, by the hot temperature of the water when bathing.
4. The hair dryer, which transmit heat by forced convection.
5. The heat transfer generated by the human body when a person is barefoot.
Problem Statement
Tea Bag Rocket

Convection occurs only through

fluid material.

Hot air balloons work thanks to the

difference in the density of the air
inside the balloon being different
from the air outside of it. Inside the
balloon there is usually helium or
hot air, which are less dense than
the air outside the balloon. Could
these same properties be used for
our project?
Objective

Check the influence of temperature and the principles applied for the
elevation of an object.

Tea Bag Rocket

If you can observe the tea bag closely, you can see that it has a succession of
micro-holes when getting burnt, the air surrounding it is heated. You have to know
that the density of the air depends on the temperature, if you notice the material
of the bag is very light some of these materials are: nylon and polyethylene
terephthalate, two plastics increasingly used by manufacturers, much of which is
released by contact with heat. As it burns it becomes less dense and rises
creating a stream of hot air.
Hot air always tends to rise, so at the point where the sachet loses enough weight,
it overcomes the force of gravity and rises.

When the bag is burnt enough the tendency to rise is stronger than the force of gravity itself. And that’s
how the tea bag turns into a rocket.
This is what happens with hot air balloons. Hot air weighs less or is lighter than cold air and therefore
rises. In hot air balloons, in order to increase the temperature of the air inside, we need to light up the
candle with burners, so that way we create lighter and less dense air than the outside and finally push
up the balloon. In gas balloons, helium or nitrogen is introduced into the candle, gases that are lighter
than air in the atmosphere, producing the same lifting effect. The balloons ascend based on the
Archimedes principle.
Conclusions
Tea Bag Rocket.

I came to the conclusion that for there to be an elevation effect inside the bag,
we need to heat up the air inside of it, so that increases the thrusting reaction.
To simplify and not scare us: If the temperature increases, the volume or
pressure will increase, or both at the same time.

The hot tea bag is lifted up by the principle of Archimedes, the density of the hot
air it contains, has to be lower than that the air surrounding it, so the tea bag
receives an upward thrust that lifts it.
If we heat the air contained in a bag to a temperature of approximately 75
degrees Celsius in an indoor environment at about 24 degrees Celsius, we will
achieve a lifting force that will be proportional to the volume of the bag.
