Verbs are divided in three groups according to the endings of their infinitive: ar -er -ir. The verbs
themselves consist of two parts: a stem or root, which carries the meaning, and the ending, which in
conjugated forms indicates the subject and the tense.
Example: comer (to eat) com is the root and -er is the ending.
vivir (to live) viv is the root and -ir is the ending
The verb’s ending change for each person (1st, 2nd, 3rd). The ending indicates who the
subject is in each case. In Spanish, the subject can be omitted.
