The king gave his youngest daughter a golden ball. It was her favorite toy. One day,
as she was playing, the golden ball fell into a deep well. The princess sat by the well
weeping. She heard someone say, “What is the matter, little one?” She looked up and
saw a large, ugly frog.
“My golden ball has fallen down the well. I can’t reach it,” sobbed the princess.
“If you take me home and let me, be your best friend, I will get the ball,” said the frog.
“Oh, yes!” promised the princess. But as soon as the frog handed her the golden ball,
she ran back to the castle.
“Wait for me!” shouted the frog as he hopped after her.
The princess ran into the castle and shut the door. She wanted to forget her promise
to the frog.
That night at dinner, there was a knock at the door. It was the frog. The king asked the
frog, “Why have you come to the castle?”
The frog told the king what the princess had promised him in return for his help. “Well,”
said the king, “she must do as she promised.”
The frog hopped up next to the princess. He began to eat
off her plate. When the princess started to complain, her
father frowned and told her to be quiet.
After dinner the king told his daughter to take the frog to
bed with her. She knew she had to obey her father. She
did what he said, but she was not happy about it. The frog
fell asleep on a pillow next to the princess.
When she woke up the next day, the first thing the
princess saw was the frog. She cried out, “You slimy
thing. Get off my bed!” and threw the frog against the
wall.
Right before her eyes, the frog changed into a young
prince. “Thank you for saving me,” he said. “I was under a
spell. I had to remain a frog until a princess kept her
promise to me.”

was happy that he wasn’t a frog. And the princess was happy that she no longer had
to eat and sleep with a frog.
