Riff: Disculpe señor, nosotros creemos que en realidad lo lastimó uno de sus policías.

dueños de estas calles, y no permitiré estos desórdenes.

(Se acerca un niño (Nobodies))

Ice: ¿Y tenemos que dejar que nos quiten todo lo que nos pertenece?
Pauline: Pero los sharks también quieren ser los amos, será una pelea dura.
Rose: Tal vez escojan navajas o pistolas.
Riff: Debemos estar preparados ¿Qué opinan Jets?
 Clarice: Hay que hacerlo y pronto.

Riff: Este sector es pequeño y siempre ha sido nuestro. Lo defenderemos, como

Griselda: Somos los mejores
Riff. Es necesario hablar con los Sharks para que la pelea quede arreglada. Yo
personalmente le daré la mala noticia a Bernardo.
Action: Uno de nosotros tiene que ir contigo
Riff: ¿Tony?
Rose: Ya no pertenece a la pandilla
Riff: ¡No digas eso! Tony y yo formamos los Jets. Además lo necesitamos.
Rose: ¡El trabajo lo ha echado a perder!
Minnie: Fue el que mejor peleó contra los Esmeraldas. Gracias a él les vencimos.
Riff: Y peleará ahora también. Lo conozco y sé que podemos contar con él.

SEGUNDA ESCENA
DESCRIPCIÓN GENERAL hablan Tony y Riff, luego hablan Valentina y Tony
PERSONAJES Tony, Riff y Valentina

Riff: Tony no me estás oyendo.

Tony: Claro que sí.
Riff: ¿Y por qué no me dices algo? Esto es importante.
Los Sharks pretenden apoderarse de todo, si no los detenemos ahora…
Tony: No lo entenderías, Riff
Riff: ¿El qué Tony? ¿El qué? Anda, ven con nosotros al baile. Yo ya les dije a los chicos que ibas a ir.
(Tony lo piensa un momento)
Riff: ¿A qué hora se verán?
Tony: A las diez
Riff: Ah ahí estaré
(Riff se va y Tony se queda pensando)
(Entra Valentina)
Valentina: ¿De verdad vas a volver a juntarte con esa gente?
Tony: Es solo un baile. No es nada grave.
Valentina: No deberías, Tony. Tienes potencial para salir de aquí y conseguir una vida mejor. s

TERCERA ESCENA
DESCRIPCIÓN GENERAL Anita y María hacen un vestido en la tienda de costura cuando llegan Bernardo y Chino
PERSONAJES Anita, María, Bernardo y Chino

María: ¡Ay Anita! Hace un mes que vine a este país y aún no sé que es una diversión.
Paso aquí todo el día y en casa toda la noche.
¿Para qué me trajo mi hermano aquí?
Anita: Para casarte con chino
María: Chino, cuando veo a Chino no pasa nada.
Anita: Bueno, ¿qué esperabas que pasara?
María: No lo sé. Algo. ¿Qué pasa cuando ves a Bernardo?
Anita: Es cuando no lo veo cuando pasa
(llegan Bernardo y Chino)
Bernardo: ¿Listas señoritas?
María: ¿Verdad que es muy lindo?
Bernardo: Oh sí lindo, Chino vigila bien a María esta noche
Bernardo: en caso de que yo no pueda hacerlo, también tú Anita
María: Mi hermano me trata como a una niña
Pero esta noche será el principio de mi vida como una señorita de América

CUARTA ESCENA
DESCRIPCIÓN GENERAL Baile en el gimnasio
PERSONAJES Todos
Se abre el telón y todos están bailando (dance at the gym) los jets por un lado y los shares por otro
 Entran Bernardo con Anita, y María con chino y saludan a todos, Bernardo presenta a
María a sus amigos
Ice: Hey, ya llego Bernardo
Shark: Mira Bernardo (señala a los Jets que lo miran)
(Sharks y Jets se acercan como para pelearse)
Teniente Shrank Escuchen amigos, escuchen. Yo sé que todos nos vamos a divertir en paz.
Hagan dos círculos y bailen por su cuenta.
Todos: ¡Buu! ¡Qué dices!
(Riff y Bernardo con su respectiva pareja empiezan el círculo. Con un movimiento de cabeza, llaman a sus
bandas.)

María y Tony se quedan aburridos dando vueltas, cuando la música disminuye, se ven el uno al otro, se
gym van acercando y se toman de la mano para bailar

Tony: ¿Nos conocemos?

María: No, no nos habíamos conocido.
Tony: Yo sabía que hoy iba a pasar algo, tenía que pasar. Pero esto es mucho más…
María: Maravilloso.
Tony: No puedo creerlo, ¿es una broma tuya?
María: Aun no sé hacer esa clase de bromas, y creo que no aprenderé nunca (se besan)
Bernardo: (se ilumina más y los separa Bernardo) ¡Cuidado con lo que haces americano!
María: ¡Bernardo!
Bernardo: No te acerques a mi hermana. No viste que era uno de ellos.
A las portorriqueñas solo las buscan para divertirse
Tony: Eso es mentira
Ice: Quieto Tony
Chino: Largo de aquí
Tony: ¡Déjame! No le creas
Teniente Shrank Por favor chicos, sé que se pueden llevar bien. A bailar todos
Bernardo: Ven (se lleva a María del brazo)
María: Bernardo
Bernardo: Sácala de aquí, llévala a casa
María: Pero Bernardo este es mi primer baile
Bernardo: Haz lo que te digo, ve con Chino (María se va con Chino)
Chino: (María y Tony cruzan miradas) Vamos María
Tony: María (la ve alejarse)
Bernardo: (va tras Tony, se le atraviesa Riff) A ti no te necesito
Riff: Pero yo a ti si (un policía los ve, lo agarra del hombro y se alejan) Arreglaremos una
pelea entre Jets y Sharks
Bernardo: Será un placer para mi
Riff: Vamos afuera
Bernardo: No dejaremos a las chicas aquí solas. Nos veremos a media noche
Riff: ¿En la tienda de Doc?
Bernardo: Aja
(Se van, se queda Tony solo y comienza a cantar)

DESCRIPCIÓN GENERAL Bernardo se reúne con los Sharks en la azotea.
PERSONAJES Sharks, sus novias y María.
Los Sharks y sus novias están al fondo, hablando. Bernardo está hablando con María.

Bernardo: Créeme que no lo hice para estropearte la noche, lo que te dije es cierto María.
Cuando estés casada y tengas muchos hijos podrás decirme lo que yo debo hacer
pero ahora debes obedecerme. A dormir.
María: Se te olvida que tengo madre y también padre
Bernardo: Ellos no conocen este país, son igual de inocentes que tú.
Anita: Tú tampoco lo conoces, las chicas aquí se pueden divertir, estamos en América.
Bernardo: Vamos María, a Dormir.
María: Pero Bernardo… Está bien, ya oí
(Se va enojada, Bernardo y Anita se acercan a los Sharks)
Chino: ¿Está bien María?
Anita: Sí, está bien
Bernardo: Les aseguro que esto no volverá a pasar, esta noche hay que darles una lección
Anita: Tranquilízate, tienes que pensarlo.
Teresita: Van a venir con la cabeza y la Nariz rota
Anita: Sí, van a usar a María para empezar la tercera guerra mundial.
¿Pero qué hizo? Solo estaba bailando

Anita: Uy que gran pecado
Sharks mujeres: Jajaja
Juano: Eso no es gracioso. Nos ven como cucarachas por ser extranjeros.

Los Jets esperan a los Sharks en la tienda de Doc, llega el teniente Shrank, Jets y
 Sharks arreglan la pelea

Jets, Sharks, teniente Shrank, Tony y Doc

Rose: ¿Qué pasa con los Sharks?

Action: Tal Vez no vengan esos gallinas
Riff: ¿Están preparados?
Jets: ¡Sí, sí, sí!
Riff: ¿Estamos todos? ¿No ha venido Tony?
Clarice: No ha venido, ni vendrá
Minnie: Riff, ¿qué armas crees que los Sharks pedirán?
Ice: Pedirán Piedad.
Clarice y Ice: Los Jets van a ganar. Acabaremos con ellos.
Nobodies: Oye Riff, en esa pelea yo podría serles muy útil
Action: Servirías solo de estorbo, largo.
Nobodies Puedo ayudarles, de verdad.
Griselda: Ya vete, y no vuelvas “Nobodies”
(Echan a Nobodies)
(Llega el oficial Krupke)

(Lo llaman por radio y le comunican que debe irse)

Tony: ¡Botellas, navajas, pistolas! Vaya un grupo de gallinas

Juano: Pues seguramente ustedes
Tony: Todos son unas gallinas. Piensan pelearse arrojandose piedras ¿eh? Les asusta
acercarse, les asusta pelearse a puñetazos
Velma: ¿Sólo con las manos?
Clarice: No sería una pelea
Riff: ¡Cállate!
Bernardo: Dijiste que sería con armas.
Tony: También puede ser una pelea limpia, si tienen el valor necesario.
Bernardo: De acuerdo, pelea limpia
Riff: (Le da la mano a Bernardo) Pelea limpia
(Todos simulan llevarse bien)
Shrank: Lo ven chicos, así es mejor. Todos conviviendo juntos.
Así es mejor, ustedes los puertorriqueños ya podrán usar el campo de juego.
(Bernardo se pone de pie ofendido)
Shrank: Si ya sé, este es un país libre y no te puedo hacer nada. Pero yo tengo una placa y
Una pistola, Así que yo soy quien manda, ¡fuera de aquí!
(se van los Sharks)
Shrank: Bien muchachos, ¿en dónde va a ser la pelea?
Velma: Pero señor… nosotros no…
Shrank: Vamos yo estoy de su lado, diganme en donde esta la pelea. incluso podría ayudar.
(mira a cada uno cara a cara) ¿En el campo de juegos? ¿Junto a la estación?
Tony: Vayanse todos de aquí. ¡Ya vamos a cerrar!

OCTAVA ESCENA
DESCRIPCIÓN GENERAL En la tienda de ropa María esta muy feliz, se van y Anita descubre cuando llega Tony y se
va dejándolos solos
PERSONAJES María, Tony, Anita, Rosalia y Consuelo
(maría está tarareando)
Maria: Hoy me siento tan….. felíz
Anita: La pobre chica esta loca
Maria: Es verdad, estoy loca
Francisca: Debí imaginarlo, estas muy rara hoy
Margarita: Yo creo que algo estas tramando

(Anita sale)

(Tony detiene a Ice)
Tony No es necesario que pelee nadie. No va a pelear ninguno…
(Bernardo le pega a Tony y Riff interviene)
Riff: Alto, recuerda que el trato era una pelea entre tu y Ice. Ven para acá Tony
Bernardo: ¿Pero por qué proteges al cobarde? Deja que termine la pelea.
Tony: Ninguno va a pelear. Escúchame
Bernardo: Tienes miedo, ¿Verdad que si? Gallina
(Riff empieza a pelear con Bernardo, cuando Riff saca una navaja, Tony trata de detenerlos. Bernardo
también saca una y mata a Riff. )
Tony ¡Noo! ¡Riff! ¡AAaaaaaa!
(Tony agarra la navaja de Riff y mata a Bernardo. Se oyen sirenas y todos huyen menos Tony. )
Tony Riff…… Bernardo…… ¿Qué he hecho? ¡Noo! ¿Cómo pude?
Tony se queda atónito por lo que hizo y entra Nobodies a ayudarlo a escapar.
 Nobodies Vamos Tony, tienes que huir.

DÉCIMA ESCENA
DESCRIPCIÓN
GENERAL (María se entera de la muerte de Bernardo y Tony va a verla)
PERSONAJES María, Chino y Tony

Chino: ¡María! ¿Dónde estás María?

María: Aquí estoy chino. ¿Qué pasa?
Chino: ¡María!
María: ¡Estuviste peleando, Chino! Eso está mal.
Chino: María, en la pelea….
María: ¡Dime qué pasó!
Chino: Tienes que saber que… Tony…
María: Tony, ¿Qué le pasó a Tony? Oh Chino, ¡Dime! ¿Qué le pasó a Tony?
Chino: ¡Asesinó a tu hermano!
María: No es cierto. ¡Chino! ¡No me mientas!

Hubo una pelea y … sacaron navajas. Bernardo mató al otro, pero Tony lo
Chino: apuñaló.Bernardo ha muerto. Lo siento mucho.
(La abraza, ella lo empuja)
María: ¡Dejame Chino! ¡déjame sola!
Chino: Debes ser fuerte María, Todo va a estar bien. Esto no se va
A quedar así. ¡Cuídate Tony! Por Bernardo, lo pagarás.
(Chino sale del cuarto)
María: Virgen María, por favor, que esto no sea verdad.
(Llora, Entra Tony)
María: ¡Asesino! ¡Asesino! ¡Asesino! (cae a sus brazos y llora)
Tony: Fui ahí a detener la pelea, sacaron navajas, no sé que paso. Riff era como mi
hermano, seguro que Bernardo no hizo con intención. Y yo tampoco.
(María sigue llorando)
María, no vine a darte excusas, solo a pedirte perdón antes de entregarme a
la policía.
María: ¡No! ¡No me abandones Tony! Te perdono.
Tony: Se va a arreglar todo lo sé
María: Aquí nos separan muchas cosas, nunca nos dejaran ser felices.
Tony: Entonces nos iremos de aquí, nos iremos a un lugar donde nadie nos
conozca.

Griselda: ¡Nunca vamos a dejar de pelear! ¡Hasta que no quede un solo puertoriqueño en
América! (Vuelve a llorar incontrolable) Riff, ¡mi Riff! Eras toda mi vida… ¿ahora
dónde estás? ¡Qué me maten a mí también! ¡No quiero quedarme sola en esta mísera
vida!
Velma: Tranquila, tranquila. No sabes lo que estás diciendo. Tienes que descansar un rato.
Griselda: Riff, Riff. ¡No!
(Se van Velma y Griselda)
Clarice: ¿Qué hacemos ahora?
Ice: Ocultarnos hasta que aparezca Tony
Nobodies ¡Ey muchachos!
Pauline: Ah lárgate de aquí

Action: ¿Puedes avisarle a Tony que se esconda en la tienda de Doc?
Nobodies ¡Sí! ¡Escuchen! Tony peleó por nosotros y ahora debemos protegerlo.
No debemos permitir que Chino se acerque a la tienda de Doc.
Clarice: Si los puertorriqueños quieren seguir peleando, ¡No nos rendiremos!

GENERAL Anita se entera de que María perdonó a Tony. Shrank interroga a María.

(María y Tony están en el cuarto, abrazados y llorando)

Tony: Debemos huir hoy mismo.
María: ¿Pero a dónde?
Tony: No importa. Un lugar donde nadie nos juzgue.
Anita: (Su Voz) María, María. Soy Anita. ¿Estás ahí dentro? ¡María! Abre la puerta, quiero
 hablar contigo.
Tony: Doc. nos ayudará, le pediré dinero. Prepara tus cosas, Nos veremos en su tienda, en
quince minutos
Anita: ¡María abre! ¿Estás con alguien? ¡Vamos María!
María: Ahí estaré… Te adoro Antón.
Tony: Te adoro María
(Tony se va, María abre la puerta y entra Anita de luto)
Anita: ¿Quién era María? ¿Acaso era el americano?

Shrank: Lo que sea necesario. ¿Usted estuvo en el baile del gimnasio?
María: Anita la cabeza me sigue doliendo, quieres ir a la tienda de Doc. por favor.
(Anita lo piensa)

Anita: ¿Qué es lo que tengo que pedir?
María: Doc. ya sabe, dile que estoy ocupada, que no puedo ir.
(Anita sale)

María: Disculpe, ¿qué me decía?

Shrank: A sí, en el baile ese, su hermano tuvo una discusión porque usted bailó con cierto
Muchacho, ¿quién era?

Shrank: ¿tiene alguna idea de quién haya cometido el asesinato de su hermano?
María: (llora) no, lo sé. Pero es un tema muy delicado.

Minnie: Está allá abajo en el sótano
(Entra Anita)
Rose: ¿Qué haces aquí metiche?
Anita: Quiero ver a Doc.
Ice: No está aquí
Paulin: Que coincidencia de verla, “señorita”
Minnie: ¿A dónde cree que va?
Anita: Al sótano
Ice: Ya le dije que ahí no está
Anita: Escuchen traigo un mensaje para Tony. Sé que está aquí
Minnie: ¿Quién te lo dijo?
Rose: ¿Acaso es un mensaje de Chino?
Anita: solo quiero ayudar
Gris: ¿La novia de Bernardo quiere ayudar?
Ice: Quiere ayudar a matar a Tony
Anita: ¡No! Tengo que decirle a tony……

Tony: ¿Trajo el dinero?

Ice se acerca para cargar a Tony…. María se avienta a Tony
