Buenos días, jóvenes.

Hemos llegado a la Unidad 6, semana 10 de nuestro curso. Les recuerdo que el mismo finaliza el 11
de diciembre de 2022.
Otro punto importante a referir es que para estas últimas 6 semanas de trabajo, nuestras sesiones
de chats se llevarán a cabo los días jueves. La hora exacta está señalada en la sección del
CALENDARIO.
Por otra parte, para esta semana número 10 tenemos una sola actividad la cual está relacionada con
el parafraseo o paráfrasis. Es decir, es la explicación con palabras propias del contenido de un texto
para facilitar la comprensión de la información que contenga dicho texto.

La actividad presente en la plataforma es la siguiente:

Read the text below and evaluate the three given paraphrases saying which one is the best
paraphrased.
You have to express your opinion (giving reason) about the three paraphrases and say which one is
correctly paraphrased (supporting your answer) and which ones are not and why they are not.
In other words, you have to specify what is wrong with each of the paraphrases and which the correct
one is.
You will find information about this topic in the books “Academic Writing” and “Writing: learn to write
better academic essays.”
You can find them at the resource section in the link for Unit VI.
For the book “Academic writing”, the information about effective paraphrasing is on chapter 1.6, page
71.
For the book “Writing: learn to write better academic essays”, the information about
effective paraphrasing is on chapter 10, page 115.

¿Qué debe hacer con esa actividad?

 Primero debe leer el Abstract titulado THE CAUSES OF THE

INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION.
 Una vez leído el Abstract, inmediatamente verá tres paráfrasis (o
parafraseos) de ese Abstract. Solo una de ellas es correcta. Usted debe
señalar porqué la opción que usted seleccionó es la correcta, y porqué las
otras dos no lo son. Debe ARGUMENTAR/JUSTIFICAR cada una de las
tres opciones.
  Para argumentar su respuesta, debe buscar información sobre lo qué es el
parafraseo en los libros que allí se mencionan: Academic Writing y
Writing: learn to write better academic essays. Esos libros los encuentra
en la sección de RECURSOS disponibles para la semana 10. Las páginas
están señaladas en las instrucciones. De igual modo puede buscar
información sobre este tema en otras fuentes de libros en internet.
 La respuesta correcta del parafraseo con su respectivo argumento tendrá un
valor de 40 puntos. Los argumentos para las otras dos opciones de porque no
se consideran las mejores paráfrasis tendrán un valor de 30 puntos cada uno
para un subtotal de 60 puntos. En total serán 100 puntos a evaluar.

Estas son las tres opciones donde usted debe argumentar su pertinencia o no
como correctas paráfrasis.

(a) A focus on demand may help to explain the UK origin of the industrial revolution. At that time workers’
pay was high, but energy from coal was inexpensive. This encouraged the development of mechanical
inventions based on steam power, which enabled bosses to save money by mechanising production
(Allen, 2009).
(b) The reason why Britain was the birthplace of the industrial revolution can be understood by analysing
demand in the early 1700s, according to Allen (2009). He maintains that,uniquely, Britain had the critical
combination of cheap energy from coal and high labour costs. This encouraged the adoption of steam
power to mechanise production, thus saving on wages and increasing profitability.
(c) Allen (2009) claims that the clearest explanation for the UK location of the industrial revolution is seen
by examining demand factors. By the eighteenth century cheap energy and high wages were both
aspects of the British economy. As a result, the mechanisation of industry through inventions such as the
steam engine and mechanical spinning was profitable because employers were able to save money on
employees by spending on coal. At that time, Britain was the only country with significant deposits of coal.
