The fall of Constantinople was a shock to the West, it was seen as the end and end
of Christianity.
For many historians it marks the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the
Modern Age.
The flight of many Greek thinkers to the Italian Cortes was an important factor in
the rise of the Renaissance in Europe.
Turkish control of the city blocked trade between Europe and Asia and forced
European nations to seek new trade routes.
the Portuguese and Spanish took advantage of its geographical location next to the
Atlantic Ocean to try to reach India by sea.
The Ottoman Empire held the city until its collapse after World War I.
IMPERIO BIZANTINO
TheEastern Roman Empire at the end of the fourth century year 395 had divided
into two and was ruled by two different emperors.

the Western Roman Empire.

In the new Byzantine Italy the capital the city of Ravenna on the Adriatic Sea
was the capital .
Itis full of beautiful churches such as San Apolinar and Sant Vitalis. En San vitalis
is where the mosaic of Justinian and his wife is.
InConstantinople the emperor built the great hagia church Sofía which was used
for important religious ceremonies.
El esplendor de bizancio
cultura bizantina
Byzantine culture

order to preserve the Roman judicial system .

CHRISTIANITY IN BYZANTIUM
The Byzantine Empire knew how to adapt classical Greek and Roman culture to
that of Christianity
The Byzantines believed that the emperor had to intervene in ecclesiastical affairs
THAT IS WHY religion and politics were combined.
From the 6th century the Slavs, culture that inhabited present-day Russia, came
into contact with the Byzantine Empire and gradually adopted that culture.
To translate the Bible into Slavic two Byzantine monks Cyril and Metodium
invented an alphabet based on the Greek letters, it is called the Cyrillic
alphabet, and even today it is used by several European and Asian languages such
as Russian, Bulgarian or Mongolian.
By the sixteenth century many Slavs had already become followers of the
Orthodox Church.
Lor more important was the conversion of Prince Vladimir of Kiev who allowed
Byzantine influence to enter Russia by linking its history to that of Europe.
WhenConstantinople fell in the 15th century the Russian monarchs adopted the
title of tsar which means to cease because they felt they were heirs of Byzantium.
Byzantine art endured in these countries for centuries both in its architecture and in
its paintings of icons.
The Orthodox and Catholic churches share many beliefs although they disagree on
some points such as the different ceremonies and festivals for example the
Orthodox Christmas is celebrated the epiphany of January 6 in addition orthodox
priests can marry
