Bien, vamos a agrupar los diferentes adverbios en dos grupos, según la posición que ocupan en
la oración, ya que hay distintas posiciones.

GRUPO 1:

always

usually

often

sometimes

never

Los adverbios de este primer grupo se colocan entre el sujeto y el verbo, siempre y cuando el
verbo no sea to be. Si es to be, irá detrás del verbo. Ante una oración negativa, ponemos el
adverbio entre la negativa y el verbo, es decir, delante del verbo principal.
Ejemplos:

I always go to school by bus.

I usually get up at 7.

I often watch TV in the evening.

I sometimes have lunch in a restaurant.

I never arrive late.

My grandmother doesn’t go out. She’s always at home = el adverbio de frecuencia va detrás

del verbo porque se trata del verbo to be.

often, usually y sometimes también se pueden escribir al principio de oración: Sometimes I

have lunch in a restaurant.

GRUPO 2:

Every day

Estos adverbios pueden ir tanto al principio de oración como al final.

Ejemplos:

Every day I have homework.

Every Monday I have my English class.

On Mondays I go to my English class.

Once a month I have a test.

Twice a month I have a test.

I work every day.

I have my English classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

I play tennis once a week.

I go to the gym twice a week.

Normalmente se pregunta «How often» y se contesta con uno de estos adverbios, por
ejemplo: how often do you have Italian classes? = I have every Tuesday.

ACLARACIONES:

1) Para decir en inglés «todos los días» utilizamos every + day, por ejemplo: I go to the gym
every day, y si quiero decir «todos los martes» por ejemplo, diré: I go to the gym every
Tuesday.

Cabe destacar que la palabra every es singular en inglés, por tanto, tanto «day» como
cualquiera de los días que pongamos, deben ir en singular. Es incorrecto decir: every days o
every Tuesdays.

2. Los días de la semana se pueden utilizar tanto en singular como en plural, es decir, si yo
digo: I have my English classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays puedo poner los días en plural, ya
que es todos los martes y todos los jueves, no sólo uno.

3. Hardly ever es otro adverbio de frecuencia que se pone entre el sujeto y el verbo y signifca
apenas, casi nunca: I hardly ever go to the cinema = casi nunca voy al cine.
