Christmas in the Caribbean

La Navidad es la celebraci6n del nacimiento de Jesucristo. El dfa veinticinco de

diciembre hay mucha felicidad. Durante la estaci6n navidefia, la gente manda tarjetas de

Navidad y hace llamadas telef6nicas para expresar sus mejores deseos.

La radio contribuye al reconocimiento y al brfo de la actividad cultural mediante las

canciones religiosas y los villancicos que transmiten. La decoraci6n de las casas con luces y el

arbol navidefio, asf como la preparaci6n de la comida exquisita y el intercambio de regalos

preservan la felicidad y el caracter de Ia epoca navidefia.

Las gentes caribefias son las mas acogedoras. Les da placer compartir su j am6n

serrano, su cerveza de jengibre y su torta de frutas con quienquiera. La Navidad en el Caribe

es una ocasi6n casi magica.

Puerto Plata

Se dice que el mismo Cristobal Colon maravillado ante las tonalidades del agua bautizo

este Iugar como PUERTO PLATA, cuando vio sus costas por primera vez. Hoy en dfa, Puerto

Plata no solo es el puerto mas importante de la costa norte de la Republica Dominicana, sino

tambien uno de los destinos turfsticos mas importantes de la isla.

Esta tierra productora de cafia de azucar, ron y tabaco tambien cuenta con una de las

minas de ambar mas importantes del pafs. Este puerto esta cercano a hermosas playas, como

Sosua y Cabarete. Alli encontrara modemos complejos turfsticos donde podra descansar

tendido en la playa o practicar su deporte acuatico preferido. Ademas, Puerto Plata cuenta

con una vibrante vida noctuma que no puede dejar de disfrutar quien la visita.

El Mate

El mate es una bebida tfpica de algunos pafses del cono sur como Argentina, Uruguay y

Paraguay. El mate es similar al te, pero de color extremadamente verde y de un sabor fuerte.

El mate como bebida, data desde la epoca precolombina. Para los conquistadores espafioles,

la buena talla y el vigoroso estado de los aborfgenes se debfan a esta extrafia infusion que los

indfgenas tomaban en calabazas naturales. Mas tarde, los gauchos y otros personajes tfpicos de

las pampas continuaron con esta tradici6n.

En la actualidad, el habito de "cebar mate" o tomar mate sigue vigente. Este ritual puede

disfrutarse a solas o como excusa para reunirse con amigos. En ellenguaje popular, ofrecer un

mate a alguien significa abrirle las puertas de la casa y darle confianza.
