Termodinámica y equilibrios
• ¿Cómo se llega a la organización atómica de los materiales?
• ¿Cómo puede surgir de un metal fundido, cuyos átomos pululan al azar de un lado
para otro un sólido cristalino, con todos sus átomos dispuestos en riguroso orden?
• ¿Cómo y dónde dónde debe colocarse cada átomo antes y después del cambio de
estructura alotrópica?
• ¿Cambiarán de posición al unísono todos los átomos del cristal para dar origen a la
nueva estructura?
• ¿Cuándo se solidifica una aleación como el latón, qué elemento solidifica primero?

Solidificación fuera de equilibrio y segregación:
Un proceso de enfriamiento normal se realiza en unos pocos minutos o a lo más
unas pocas horas, por lo cual las condiciones de equilibrio no se logran. Al
solidificar el metal se producen gradientes de concentración que no logran
equilibrarse debido al insuficiente tiempo del que se dispone, originando pérdidas
de propiedades mecánicas.
