ircunvalando el borde del casco histórico o en

zonas poco urbanizadas durante la Colonia
encontramos edificios de interés, como los
cementerios trinitarios o la antigua ermita de
la Candelaria de la Popa, junto a las ruinas del
hospital Militar, en el pie de un cerro desde donde se disfruta
de una hermosa vista de la ciudad.

 LOGIA AURORA DEL BIEN
Ubicado en la calle Colón, este edificio fue cons-
truido durante las primeras décadas del siglo XX,
bajo las tendencias eclécticas que llegaron a la
Ciudad. Posee una tipología de la casa quinta con
jardín delantero y sin medianería; su límite con la
vía se establece mediante una verja de hierro con
pilares de ladrillo sobre los que se aprecian rebus-
cados copones. El inmueble es una construcción
con portal, el cual se soporta por cuatro pares de
columnas, de inspiración dórica, sobre las que se
apoya todo un pretil con cornisas y balaustres,
entre estos últimos se halla un elemento elipsoi-
dal que recuerda los antiguos frontones. Su
fachada se compone de dos ventanas con lucetas
en la parte superior y la puerta de acceso posee
un postigo-vitral de cristal opaco. En su interior
lo que más se destaca son sus pavimentos de
mosaicos blancos y negros.
CEMENTERIO CATÓLICO
Construido en 1803 en terrenos de un trinitario
llamado Nicanor Lahera, ubicados en lo que hoy
constituye la carretera que conduce a la ciudad
de Cienfuegos.
Se accede a él mediante un frontis de mam-
postería cerrado por una verja de hierro de gran-
des secciones. Dentro del recinto encontramos
una hermosa capilla, fechada en 1833, con un
elevado campanario y un ábside cubierto por
una bóveda catalana. Como elementos decorati-
vos presenta un retablo de madera donde se evo-

AURORA DEL BIEN LODGE.
Situated on the street Colón, this
building was constructed during
the early decades of the 20th
century in keeping with the
Eclecticism that had recently
emerged in the city. Its style is
that of the typical detached
mansion with a front garden
delimited by iron railings with
brick pillars adorned by over-
elaborate urns. A portico with
four Doric-style geminate columns
fronts the building and serves as
the support for a balustraded
parapet with cornices and an
elliptic element reminiscent of
the old pediments. The façade
comprises two windows with
fanlights and a main entrance
fitted with a single-leaf door
made from opaque glass. The
most outstanding elements of the
interior are the black and white
floor tiles.

Boca y Reforma
CATHOLIC CEMETERY. Now the
site of the road leading to the city
of Cienfuegos, this cemetery was
constructed in 1803 on land
belonging to a Trinitario called
Nicanor Lahera. It is accessed by a
brick façade with large iron
railings. Situated inside the
enclosure is a beautiful chapel,
dated 1833, with a high bell-
tower and an apse covered by a
vault in which the bricks are lain
flat. The main decorative
elements, both currently under
restoration, are the wooden
altarpiece depicting the souls in
Purgatory and a crucifix. The
mausoleums and tombs are richly
decorated in keeping with the
social status of their owners.
Outstanding examples are those
belonging to the Sánchez Iznaga
family, to that of Mariano Borrell
and, in particular, the Malibrán
family vault, which is engraved
with the following poem attributed
to the Cuban poet Plácido:

tauración.
Significativas resultan las decoraciones de los
mausoleos y tumbas los cuales se corresponden
con el nivel social de los difuntos, como el de la
familia Sánchez Iznaga, la de don Mariano
Borrell y una en especial, perteneciente a la
familia Malibrán, que como epitafio posee los
siguientes versos, atribuidos al poeta cubano
Plácido:
“Regad doncellas de amorosas flores
el tétrico sepulcro de una esposa,
que fueran sus delicias mis amores
y en botón feneció cual fresca rosa
abatida por el viento con rigores.
Venid los bardos y en su yerta losa
cantad, cantad su muerte
y conmigo llorad mi triste suerte.”
CEMENTERIO CIVIL
Levantado en las afueras de la ciudad, hacia el año
de 1921, aledaño a la carretera que conduce hacia
el poblado costero, su construcción se mueve del
neoclásico al eclecticismo, solución adoptada en
algunos edificios de la ciudad.
El frontis se compone de una nave de techo
plano a la que se accede mediante tres arcos de
medio punto con claves decoradas; sobre ellos,
un friso compuesto por metopas y abilletados,
que culmina con un cornisa en cuarto de bocel;
esta sección de fachada concluye con un frontón
decorado con molduras rehundidas; al final de
esta nave se repiten los tres arcos, los que se cie-
rran mediante trabajos de herrería.A ambos lados
de la nave se encuentran anexos dos pequeños
espacios decorados a semejanza de la primera.
En el interior se destacan por una rica herre-
ría funeraria y por sus decoraciones en mármol
las pequeñas bóvedas y los mausoleos pertene-
cientes a las Logias de la ciudad, construidos todos
en la primera mitad del siglo XX.

CIVIC CEMETERY. Constructed on
the outskirts of Trinidad around
1921 on a site adjacent to the
road leading to the coastal area, I S O L A T E D
its style, like that of several other
buildings in the city, combines
Neoclassicism with Eclecticism.
The front section comprises a flat-
roofed nave accessed by means of
three semi-circular arches with
decorated keystones. Running

above is a frieze made up of
metopes and billets and
culminating in a quarter-round
cornice. This section of the façade
is completed by a pediment
adorned with sunken mouldings.
The three arches are repeated at

the end of the nave, this time

fitted with ironwork. Annexed to
each side of the nave are two
small spaces decorated in the
same fashion as the former.
Outstanding elements of the
interior are the small vaults and

mausoleums belonging to the
city's various Lodges. Constructed
during the first half of the 20th
century, these are decorated with
rich funerary ironwork and
marble mouldings.

 LA EMPRESA
Casa construida en la segunda mitad del siglo
XIX en las afueras de la ciudad, en los límites con
el valle de Santa Rosa. Hermosa vivienda con
portal y una accesoria lateral; en su fachada lo
más notable son sus trabajos de carpintería en
ventanas y la puerta principal, las cuales son de
tablero y con mamparas de persanería francesa.
En su interior se repiten las puertas de tablero
adornadas con jambas y pateras de elegante fac-
tura. El cuerpo original del inmueble lo consti-
tuyen dos crujías paralelas a la calle y un martillo
en su ala derecha. Con posterioridad se le anexó
a este martillo, otro cuerpo bajo idénticas carac-
terísticas constructivas.
Interesante resulta de este inmueble su entor-
no: patio posterior con una fuente y verjas deco-
radas por el cual se accede a las ruinas de un
antiguo fortín colonial conocido como Santa
Rosa, construcción que defendía esa zona del
valle durante el período de las guerras indepen-
dentistas en el siglo XIX.
CABILDO DE SANTA BÁRBARA
Vivienda ubicada en una zona de escasa urbaniza-
ción durante la Colonia, su sencilla construcción
data de la primera mitad del siglo XIX. En 1952 se
funda en ella el Cabildo de Santa Bárbara por
Pedro Matamoros, como resultado de la pregnan-
cia que habían alcanzado los cultos sincréticos en la

LA EMPRESA. This mid-19th-century
building is situated on the outskirts
of the city on the boundary with
the Santa Rosa Valley. A beautiful
house, it has a portico and a lateral
accessory construction. The
outstanding elements of the
façade are the panelled windows
and doors with their exquisite
woodwork and French shutters.
The panelled doors are repeated
inside the house, where they are
adorned with elegant jambs and
paterae. The original section of
the building comprises two bays
running parallel to the street and
a wing on the right. Another
identical construction was
subsequently annexed to this wing.
An interesting feature of this
building is its setting: a rear
courtyard with a fountain and
ornate railings provides access to
the ruins of an old colonial fort.
Known as Santa Rosa, this fort
defended the area from the valley
during the independence wars of
the 19th century.

CHAPTER OF ST BARBARA. This
building is situated in an area
which, during colonial times, was
barely developed. It is a simple
construction dating back to the
first half of the 19th century. In
1952 Pedro Matamoros
established the Chapter of St
Barbara in the building as a result
of the increasing importance of
syncretic worship in the city. The
façade is very simple, its only
outstanding elements being the
old projecting iron windows with
their wooden rails. The building
comprises two bays separated by
a low mixtilinear arch, whilst
several of the interior mud walls
have been preserved. The
reception room of the building
contains the image of St Barbara
for worship by the faithful, as
ciudad. La fachada es de un diseño muy simple, en
ella sólo se destacan las arcaicas ventanas voladas de
hierro con sus travesaños de madera. Es un edificio
de dos crujías, separadas entre sí por un arco mix-
tilíneo de bajo puntal; en el interior aún conserva
algunos de sus muros de embarrado. La sala de la
casa se destina al culto a la imagen de Santa
Bárbara, apreciándose un altar decorado según la
religión y un gusto marcadamente popular.
ERMITA DE LA CANDELARIA DE LA POPA
Y RUINAS DEL HOSPITAL MILITAR
Hacia el extremo norte del Centro Histórico y
sobre la elevación del cerro de la Popa aparece
esta pequeña iglesia, fundada en el primer cuarto
del siglo XVIII y reedificada en los inicios del
siglo XIX, después del paso de una severa tor-
menta que afectó su cubierta.
Se conforma por una sola nave de modestas
dimensiones que sólo se altera en su planimetría
por la elevación del pavimento como indicativo
del presbiterio. A la entrada aparecen dos peque-
ños recintos, uno para la escalera de acceso al
campanario y el otro para alojar la pila bautismal;
a la izquierda del presbiterio aparece la antigua
sacristía de dimensiones cuadradas. La cubierta
de la nave es un techo de armadura de madera y
tejas a dos vertientes, que se oculta por una espa-
daña con tres pequeños arcos apuntados que sir-
ven de campanario; la sacristía se cubre por su
primitivo techo de madera a cuatro aguas.
El templo presenta una extraordinaria fachada
de influencia barroca con la puerta pricipal en
forma de arco abocinado, el remate superior apira-
midado y un ático de perfil sinuoso. Se accede a
través de una empedrada calzada construida en
1849 para facilitar el ascenso de los feligreses. En el
interior de la nave aparecen las huellas de la deco-
ración pictórica que delineaba el zócalo. El exte-
rior fue pintado de un intenso amarillo y sus vanos
resaltados con franjas de color blanco. Presenta un
mal estado de conservación. Justo al lado, se obser-
van las ruinas del que fue antiguo hospital Militar,
construido en la primera mitad del siglo XIX.

CHAPEL OF THE CANDELARIA DE
LA POPA. This small church was
founded in the first quarter of the
18th century and reconstructed at
the beginning of the 19th century
following damage to its roof in a
violent storm. It comprises a single
modestly-sized nave, the ground
plan of which is interrupted only by
the slightly higher paving of the
presbytery. Situated at the entrance

are two small areas, one containing
the staircase leading to the bell-
tower and the other the baptismal
font, whilst to the left of the
presbytery is the old square-plan
sacristy. The pitched roof of the nave,
which has a wooden and tiled truss,

is hidden by a bell-tower with three
small pointed arches. The sacristy
still has its original wooden hipped
roof. The façade is very unusual in
that, despite its simplicity, it contains
elements that suggest a certain

Baroque influence: the splayed arch
of the main door, the pyramidal shape
of the upper crest and the sinuous
profile of the attic. The chapel is
approached via a stone-paved street
laid in 1849 to facilitate access by the
worshippers. Inside, the nave still

contains the pictorial decoration
that delimited the plinth. The external

walls were painted deep yellow
and the openings enhanced by white
borders. The ruins of what was the
old military hospital, built during
the first half of the 19th century,
are situated nearby.
