Clase 11: Past Continuous

El Past Continuous se usa cuando se quiere enfatizar que una acción en el pasado duró un largo tiempo o
se realizó por un largo período. En combinación con el Simple Past, se usa para resaltar que la acción en
Past Continuous fue más larga comparada con la del Simple Past.
Se forma con el verbo TO BE en pasado (WAS-WERE) como auxiliares, más el gerundio del verbo
principal.

Ejemplos:
Yesterday I was sleeping all morning. Ayer estuve durmiendo toda la mañana.
At 4:00 o’clock you were knocking at my door. A las 4:00 en punto estabas golpeando a mi puerta.
He was working in London last year. Él estaba trabajando en Londres el año pasado.
She was making a cake for her son when I called her yesterday. Ella estaba haciendo una torta para su
hijo cuando la llamé ayer.
The dog was lying all morning because he wasn’t feeling well. El perro estuvo descansando toda la
mañana porque no se estaba sintiendo bien.
We were watching TV when the storm started. Estábamos mirando televisión cuando comenzó la
tormenta.
You were eating the cake when she shouted. Ustedes estaban comiendo la torta cuando ella gritó.
They were holding an umbrella because it was raining. Ellos estaban sosteniendo un paraguas porque
estaba lloviendo.

Negative:
Para formar el negativo usamos los auxiliares WASN’T – WEREN’T

Ejemplos:
I wasn’t working all day yesterday. Yo no estuve trabajando todo el día ayer.
Mary wasn’t cleaning the floors while my mother was washing the clothes. María no estaba limpiando los
pisos mientras mi madre estaba lavando la ropa.
The children weren’t behaving well when I entered the classroom. Los niños no se estaban portando bien
cuando entré en el aula.

Interrogative:
Para el interrogativo, los auxiliares WAS-WERE van delante de la pregunta.

Ejemplos:
Was she drinking when you found her? ¿Ella estaba bebiendo cuando la encontraste?
Were the dogs barking when the thief came into the house? ¿Estaban ladrando los perros cuando el
ladrón entró en la casa?
Where were you playing tennis last Saturday? ¿Dónde estabas jugando al tenis el sábado pasado?
What was he doing when you arrived? ¿Qué estaba haciendo él cuando llegaste?
Why were they crying yesterday? ¿Por qué estaban ellos llorando ayer?
EJERCICIOS: Forme oraciones, como en el ejemplo y luego tradúzcalas.
She/at home/study.
She was at home. She was studying.

Traduzca este párrafo:

Yesterday afternoon there was a big mess at home. We were moving to another house. Everybody was
doing something. My father was lifting the furniture. My mother was sweeping the floors. I wasn’t
helping because I was studying for school. But my brother and sister were putting some glasses into big
boxes. My dog was barking all day because there were a lot of people working and it got very nervous.
My mother was shouting all day too. It was a terrible day, but, finally, we are in a new house now!
