El pasado continuo, se usa para una acción en desarrollo en el pasado cuando otra acción la interrumpe, la acción que interrumpe está en el
pasado simple, “when y while” señalan el uso del pasado simple y continuo. En general usamos el pasado simple directamente después de
“when” y el pasado continuo después de “while”
Ejemplos:
Maria called while I was watching tv: Maria llamó mientras yo estaba viendo televisión.
He was walking to school when he fell: Él estaba caminando hacia la escuela cuando se cayó.
USOS:
1. Describir acciones que estaban en progreso en un tiempo especial del pasado. Ejemplo:
Peter was reading a book yesterday evening. = Pedro estaba leyendo un libro ayer por la noche.
2. Describir dos acciones que estaban sucediendo al mismo tiempo sin que interfieran una con la otra,
ejemplo:
Anne was writing a letter while Steve was reading the New York limes.
Anne estaba escribiendo una carta mientras Steve estaba leyendo el New York Times (periódico.)
3. Describir una acción (pasado progresivo) que es interrumpida por otra (pasado simple), ejemplo:
ESTRUCTURA
Afirmativa: sujeto + was/were + verbo acabado en -ing + complementos
Negativa: sujeto + wasn't/weren't + verbo acabado en -ing + complementos
Interrogativa: was/were + sujeto + verbo acabado en -ing + complementos?
Para la forma del verbo con la terminación –ing es importante tener en cuenta las

siguientes situaciones:

2.Study= studying (cualquier verbo que termine en –y se deja la -y y se agrega -ing)
We 3.Live = living (si el verbo termina en –e se elimina la -e y agregamos –ing)
They were studying
You 4.Run= Running (si el verbo monosílabo termina en consonante + vocal
+consonante se duplica la última consonante y agregamos –ing)
PRACTICE
1. Read Herb´s Schedule from the previous day, and write sentences of what he was doing.
Example:
He w as meeting w ith Mr. Jones.
What was Herb doing at 8:00 AM?
3. Complete the text with the verb in brackets, use past continuous.
One evening, I (1) was going (go) home with my cousin Ana. We (2) ___________________ (walk)
through the forest when we heard a strange noise. We looked around but it was dark and it (3)
__________________ (rain), so we didn’t see anything. We continued going home but then suddenly
we stopped. Two people were in the path and they (4) _________________ (talk) loudly. We were
really scared. There are many scary stories in our village. The most horrible story is about two
women who were killed by a murderer while they (5) _________________ (work) on their house.
Maybe it was them? We thought about running away when one of the people said my name. It was
my brother Mario, he (6) ________________ (wait) for me to come home!
