CLÁUSULAS SUSTANTIVAS Y ADJETIVAS EN INGLÉS

Una cláusula nominal o noun clause es un grupo de palabras entre las que

podemos encontrar un sujeto y un verbo que juntos desempeñan la
función de sustantivo. Las cláusulas nominales son siempre subordinadas,
es decir, su significado depende de otros componentes de la oración
completa, no tiene sentido por sí sola.

Las cláusulas nominales suelen comenzar con las palabras how, when,
where, which, why, whatever, whoever, etc.

He told me that he would come tomorrow (Él me dijo que vendría mañana)
I don’t know why he said that (No sé por qué él dijo eso)
En el Segundo ejemplo podemos ver dos cláusulas que son I don’t know y
he said that. Las dos partes de la oración están conectadas con la palabra
why, que se encarga de transformar la segunda cláusula en un sustantivo
que es a su vez el objeto de la oración.

 My friends didn’t know that I could ride a bike (Mis amigos no sabían

que yo podía montar en bicicleta).
Pueden ser los complementos de un sujeto.
 His mistake was that he decided to stop studying (Su error fue que
decidió dejar de estudiar).
 Una cláusula nominal puede ser el objeto de una preposición.
 Her parents are not responsible for what she did. (Sus padres no son
responsables por lo que ella hizo)

Omisión de los pronombres relativos:

Como ya hemos visto, por lo general las cláusulas nominales van
precedidas por alguno de los pronombres relativos, y, excepto por el
pronombre that, se pueden omitir para indicar una cláusula nominal:

NOUN CLAUSE
I don’t know where she lives. (No sé donde vive ella)
I Don’t know what he said. (No sé lo que el dijo)
Do you know when they arrive? (¿Sabes cuándo llegan?
Who live there? (¿Quién vive allí)What happened? (¿Qué pasó?
I don’t know who live there. (No sé quién vive allí)
Please tell me what happened. (Por favor, dime qué pasó.
READING COMPREHENSION

The House
Mr. and Mrs. Smith have one son and one daughter. The son's name is John. The daughter's name
is Sarah.
The Smiths live in a house. They have a living room. They watch TV in the living room. The father
cooks food in the kitchen. They eat in the dining room. The house has two bedrooms. They sleep in
the bedrooms. They keep their clothes in the closet. There is one bathroom. They brush their teeth
in the bathroom.
The house has a garden. John and Sarah play in the garden. They have a dog. John and Sarah
like to play with the dog.
