LIVING WITH AN INDIGENOUS FAMILY

(Viviendo con una familia indígena)

Jayson McNamara is an Australian journalist,

writer, and a TV production editor who lives
in Buenos Aires. He is passionate about
travel and history. In his blog he shares his
experience living with an indigenous family
in Ecuador. He says that South American
indigenous communities are very distinct and
provides some tips to keep in mind when you
live with an indigenous host family in
Ecuador.

Jayson McNamara es un periodista, escritor y editor australiano productor de televisión que vive en
Buenos Aires. Le apasiona viajar y la historia. En su blog comparte experiencias viviendo con una
familia indígena en Ecuador. Él dice que las comunidades indígenas de América del Sur son muy
distintas y nos proporciona algunos consejos para tener en cuenta cuando vives con una familia de
acogida indígena en Ecuador.
 FAITH (FÉ)

In Ecuador, many types of mixed religious

expressions are possible. They have their roots in
both history and nature, with the Spanish having
implanted their European religion and the indigenous
population having maintained a strong spiritual
connection to the land.

En Ecuador, son posibles muchos tipos de expresiones religiosas

mixtas. Tienen sus raíces en la historia y la naturaleza, ya que
los españoles implantaron su religión europea y la población
indígena mantuvo una fuerte conexión espiritual con la tierra.

PACHAMAMA (MADRE TIERRA)

The Pachamama, otherwise known as mother earth and

also referred to as Mama Pacha, is an Andean spiritual
figure that emerged from ancient Incan society where she
was considered the bearer of fertility, as seen in her
influence over the harvests. throughout the year in
Ecuador, spiritual practices in indigenous communities see
the Pachamama help with good harvests.
La Pachamama, conocida como madre tierra y también llamada
Mama Pacha, es una figura espiritual Andina que emergía de la
antigua sociedad Inca donde fue considerada como portadora
de fertilidad, como se ve en su influencia sobre las cosechas.
Durante todo el año en Ecuador, las prácticas espirituales en
comunidades indígenas ven a la Pachamama como ayuda en las
buenas cosechas.

GENDER (GÉNERO)

Gender roles are different in indigenous families,

especially when it comes to the role of women. Native
women have important leadership roles within
indigenous families and communities, taking charge of
household economics, participating actively in
agriculture, and taking on the role of curanderos, or
spiritual healers.
Los roles de género son diferentes en las familias indígenas,
especialmente cuando se trata del rol de la mujer. Las mujeres
nativas tienen importantes roles de liderazgo dentro de las
familias y comunidades indígenas, se hacen cargo de la
economía doméstica, participan activamente en la agricultura y
asumen el papel de curanderos o curadores espirituales.
 MEDICINE (MEDICINA)

In indigenous Ecuador, traditional and natural medicine

dominates. They rely on a variety of plants to cure
common illnesses. In the culture of Otavalo, for example,
people believe that illness is caused by four things: fright,
evil wind, evil spirits, or foreign objects.

En el Ecuador indígena, domina la medicina tradicional y natural.

Dependen de una variedad de plantas para curar enfermedades
comunes. En la cultura de Otavalo, por ejemplo, la gente cree
que la enfermedad es causada por cuatro cosas: miedo, mal aire,
espíritus malignos u objetos extraños.
