“Wh questions”
Who, When, How often, What, How, Why,
Where, How many
Hacer preguntas en inglés puede parecer complicado a primera vista, pero lo cierto es que no es
así, sino que tan solo deberemos entender la estructura de las interrogaciones. Así mismo,
deberemos conocer las partículas interrogativas que reciben el nombre de "WH questions", ya
que sus iniciales son -mayoritariamente- estas dos consonantes.
¿Qué son las “Wh questions”?
Lo primero que debemos saber sobre este tipo de preguntas es que no pueden responderse con
“sì” o con “no”. Estas preguntas son utilizadas para averiguar información específica.
¿Cuáles son las palabras clave y cómo se pronuncian?
Estas son las formas más importantes:
When? /wen/
What? /wɒt/
Who? /huː/
Where? /wɛər/
Why? /waɪ/
Which? /wɪtʃ/
Whose? /huːz/
How? /haʊ/
¿Qué significan y ejemplos?
When? ¿Cuándo?
-When did you go to Los Angeles? ¿Cuándo fue a Los Ángeles?
What? ¿Qué, cuál, cuáles?
Dependiendo la pregunta esta palabra puede significar “¿qué?” o “¿cuál?”:
-What are their names? ¿Cuáles son sus nombres?
-What did she say? ¿Qué dijo ella?
Who? ¿Quién, quiénes?
Regularmente utilizamos esta palabra sin ningún auxiliar:
-Who drove the car? ¿Quién condujo el auto?
Who…with? ¿Con quién?
-Who do you live with? ¿Con quién vives?
Where? ¿Dónde?
-Where were you born? ¿Dónde naciste?
Why? ¿Por qué?
La palabra para preguntar es “why?” y para responder es “because (porque)”:
-Why did you call me? ¿Por qué me llamaste?
Which? ¿Cuál o cuáles?
-Which book do you want? ¿Cuál libro quiere?
Whose? ¿De quién?
-Whose is this pen? ¿De quién es este bolígrafo?
How? ¿Cómo?
-How was the trip? ¿Cómo estuvo el viaje?
How much? ¿cuánto o cuánta?
-How much sugar do you need? ¿Cuánta azúcar necesitas?
How many? ¿Cuántas o cuántos?
-How many friends do you have? ¿Cuántos amigos tienes?
How often? ¿Cada cuánto tiempo?
-How often does she go to the cinema? ¿Cada cuánto tiempo va ella a cine?
How long? ¿Cuánto se demora?
-How long was the movie? ¿Cuánto se demoró la película?

1. Teniendo en cuenta la información anterior (Explicación), elabora un mapa
conceptual con las “Wh questions”
