Sam recita este poema en el primer tomo de El Señor de los Anillos: y ya se dijo
que existe una grabación del propio Tolkien cantando.
El troll de piedra
(The Stone Troll)
Troll sat alone on his seat of stone, El troll solitario en su piedra sentado
And munched and mumbled a bare old bone; un hueso mascaba amarillo y pelado.
For many a year he had gnawed it near, Llevaba ya tiempo rumiando y puliendo
For meat was hard to come by. pues no había alimento que dar al colmillo.
Done by! Gum by! ¡Que dar al colmillo! ¡Sacándole brillo!
In a cave in the hills he dwelt alone, Vivía muy alto en su cueva alejado
And meat was hard to come by. y no hallaba carne que darle al colmillo.
Up came Tom with his big boots on. En eso llegaba Tom con sus botazas
Said he to the Troll: 'Pray, what is yon? y al troll le pregunta "¿Qué es eso que
For it looks like the shin o' my nuncle Tim, mascas?
As should be a-lyin' in graveyard. Parece la tibia de mi tío Timba
Caveyard! Paveyard! que aún debería seguir en su tumba.
This many a year has Tim been gone, ¡Seguir en su tumba! ¡Que tumba y retumba!
And I thought he were lyin' in graveyard'. Son ya muchos años que Tim nos dejara;
pensé que estaría tranquilo en su tumba".
'My lad,' said Troll, 'this bone I stole.
But what be bones that lie in a hole? El troll dice "Es cierto. Yo robé ese hueso,
Thy nuncle was dead as a lump o' lead, mas ¿qué hacen los huesos en un agujero?
Afore I found his shinbone. Ya estaba tu tío bien muerto y bien frío
Tinbone! Thinbone! antes que conmigo su tibia topara.
He can spare a share for a poor old troll, ¡Tibita tan flaca! ¡Tan fría matraca!
For he don't need his shinbone.' Puede compartirla con este troll viejo
pues a él ya no le hace ni pizca de falta".
Said Tom: 'I don't see why the likes o' thee
Without axin' leave should go makin' free Y Tom dijo: "Escucha, te daré una tunda,
With the shank or the shin o' my father's no creas que vas a salir con la tuya,
kin; robando a mi gente huesos de un pariente.
So hand the old bone over! ¿Serás tan decente de darme ese hueso?
Rover! Trover! ¡Me das ese hueso! ¡Te rompo el pescuezo!
Though dead he be, it belongs to he; Por más que esté muerto es aún cosa suya.
So hand the old bone over!' ¡Haz pues el favor de pasarme ese hueso!"
'For a couple o' pins', says Troll, and grins, "Tu tío, tu tía", el troll se reía.
'I'll eat thee too, and gnaw thy shins. "¡También a ti voy a morderte las tibias!
A bit o' fresh meat will go down sweet! Tu carne grasienta de perlas me sienta
I'll try my teeth on thee now. y tanto me tientas que el diente te hinco
Hee now! See now! ¡El diente te hinco! ¡Te atrapo de un brinco!
I'm tired o' gnawing old bones and skins; Estoy ya cansado de cráneos y tibias,
I've a mind to dine on thee now'. está decidido: ¡los dientes te hinco!"
But just as he thought his dinner caught, Mas cuando juzgaba su cena ganada
He found his hands had hold of naught. se halló con las manos tanteando la nada.
Before he could mind, Tom slipped behind El troll no discurre y Tom se le escurre
And gave him the boot to larn him. mientras se le ocurre patearlo y que
Warn him! Darn him! aprenda.
A bump o' the boot on the seat, Tom "¡Le doy pa' que aprenda! ¡Preparen la
thought, venda!
Would be the best way to larn him. En las posaderas certera patada
hará que por siempre la lección aprenda".
But harder than stone is the flesh and bone
Of a troll that sits in the hills alone. Son duros, empero, cual piedra los huesos
As well set your boot to the mountain's y carnes de un troll que usa rocas de asiento.
root, ¡Sería igual fiasco patear un peñasco!
For the seat of a troll don't feel it. Las nalgas (¡qué chasco!) del troll nada
Peel it! Heal it! sienten.
Old Troll laughed, when he heard Tom ¡La nalga no siente! ¡Los cuentos no mienten!
groan, El troll ríe oyendo de Tom los lamentos
And he knew his toes could feel it. pues ve que, en efecto, sus dedos sí sienten...
Tom's leg is game, since home he came, Desde su regreso anda Tom más bien cojo,
And his bootless foot is lasting lame; y el pie sin la bota le causa aún enojo,
But Troll don't care, and he's still there al troll la noticia ni aflige ni alivia,
With the bone he boned from its owner. él rumia la tibia que birló al finado.
Doner! Boner! ¡Finado pelado! ¡Felpín deshuesado!
Troll's old seat is still the same, Su viejo trasero ni se puso rojo,
And the bone he boned from its owner! y él rumia la tibia que birló al finado.
