TOPIC: simple past tense

El past simple, también conocido como el simple past, es el tiempo verbal que se usa en el idioma
inglés para narrar hechos que ocurrieron en un momento específico en el pasado. Corresponde en
su significado al pretérito perfecto simple en español. Para formar el pasado simple debemos
tener en cuenta dos clases de verbos: los verbos regulares y los verbos irregulares.

1. Verbos regulares: con ellos Podemos formar el pasado simple solo con agregar (ed) al
final, sin embargo, hay algunos que no siguen esta regla.
a. Los verbos que terminan en (e) forman el pasado agregando (D). Example: dance-
danced.
b. Los verbos que terminan en (Y) precedidos de CONSONANTE, cambian la (y)por (I) y
agregan ed. Example study- studied.
c. Si el verbo es de una sola sílaba y termina en una sola consonante precedida de una
sola vocal duplica la última consonante y agrega (ed). Example: stop-stopped.
NOTA: ESTA REGLA NO APLICA EN VERBOS REGUALRES TERMINADOS EN ( c,x,y ,w)
Example: box-boxed.
d. Para los verbos que terminan en una vocal + (C), hay que escribir (K) al final del verbo
y agregar ed. Example: picnic- picnicked.
e. Si l verbo tiene dos silabas y termina en una sola consonante precedida de una sola
vocal y al pronunciarla hacemos el acento en la última sílaba duplicamos la última
consonante y agregamos (ed). Example: refer- referred.
f. En ingles británico duplican la (L) en ingles americano no. Example: travel-travelled
(Britanico) travel-traveled (inglés americano).

2. Verbos irregulares: no tienen reglas para formar el pasado. Example: fly-flew.

GRAMMAR STRUCTURES.

a. Affirmative sentences: subject + verb + complement.


b. Negative sentences: subject + auxiliary verb (did) + base verb + complement.
c. Interrogative form (yes-no questions): auxiliary verb did + subject + base verb +
complement + ?
Affirmative short answers: yes, subject + did
Negative short answers: no, subject + did + not
d. Interrogative form (wh questions).
Wh + did + subject + base verb + complement + ?
Answer: subject + past tense + complement.

Example: Juliana/live/ in Madrid/ last year/


Affirmative sentence: Juliana lived in Madrid last year
Negative sentence: Juliana didn’t live in Madrid last year.
Question: did Juliana live in Madrid last year?
Affirmative short answer: yes, she did.
Negative short answer: no, she didn´t.
Wh: where did Juliana live last year?
Answer: she lived in Madrid.

John Lennon was born on October 9, 1940 in Liverpool, England. His mother's name was Julia
and his father's name was Freddie.

John's father was a sailor and worked on a ship. He didn't live with his parents, he lived with
his Aunt Mimi and Uncle George. His mother visited him often, but she died when he was
seventeen.

John liked art at school, but he wasn't a good student. He loved music, and in 1960 he started
a group called 'The Beatles' with Paul McCartney, Pete Best and George Harrison.

The Beatles played in Liverpool and Hamburg, Germany. Their manager, Brian Epstein,
discovered them in the Cavern Club, Liverpool.

Cynthia Powell was John's first wife. They were married on August 23, 1962, and on April 8,
1963, John's first son Julian was born.

In 1963, John and Paul helped 'The Rolling Stones' with their first hit song, 'I Wanna Be Your
Man'. The Beatles first number one song was 'Please Please Me' John married Yoko Ono on
March 20, 1969 and they stayed in bed for a week in Amsterdam. This was their famous 'Bed-
in for peace'.

John and Yoko's son Sean was born on John's birthday in 1975.

A crazy man killed John Lennon on December 8, 1980 next to his flat in New York. He was forty
when he died.
