Unusual Grocery Shop

Located in Rotterdam, Netherlands Markhal is an unusual “shopping

centre”. More precisely it is a residential and office building with public
market inside. The building looks like a huge arch. Inside the arch there is
a food hall and in the outer part of the arch there are offices and
apartments.

Markthal is different from supermarkets

like Tesco, because it is not a one big shop.
There are no cashiers, no queue, no
trolleys and baskets. The Markthal consists
of many small shops called stands. The
stands specialize in selling different
products like baked goods, vegetables,
fruits, meat and dairy products. Each seller
has a cash register at which you can pay
for your groceries. There is also no self-
service, so the customers must talk to the shopping assistant and point to
all the bottles, boxes, cans, cartons, jars and tins they want to buy.

Markhal is trying to recreate the old way of shopping. In the past there
were no supermarkets and people went shopping almost every day in
order to have fresh products. Today a lot of people prefer going to
supermarket mostly because it’s fast. Nevertheless, it’s possible that the
quality of their products is not as good as the ones sold by local sellers.
Maybe the concept of recreating old way of shopping is a good idea.
