The Function Deployment Matrix (FDM) can be used to help identify the initial inputs into an FMEA
or it can be used by a Project team to identify the initial factors for a Designed Experiment.
When each of the output variables (requirements) are not to specification that, represents potential
"EFFECTS". When each input variable is not to specification, that represents "CAUSES".
Described below are the directions to use this spreadsheet.
2) Enter in the Project Name and Date and fill in the Customer CTQ Characteristics (those
characteristics that the customer deems important; use customer output variables identified
in the process map).
2) The Customer CTQ Characterisitics need to be numerically ranked (1-10), the most
important receiving the highest number and so on. Place these numbers in the Rank column.
3) Identify all of the potential causes that can impact the various CTQ's and list these in the
Process Input Variables (PIV's) column (see PIV's identified in the process map).
Click on OK when done.
4) The impact of the PIV's on each CTQ needs to be determined. In the Association
Table, numerically rate (using a scale from 1-10, the most important receiving the highest
number) the effect each PIV has on each CTQ.
5) After the Association Table has been completed, click on RETURN TO MAIN MENU button
on the Data spreadsheet.
