Ambientada en Sewell, campamento minero enclavado en la Cordillera de los Andes, esta novela nos
muestra la forma de vida, las costumbres y las situaciones históricas y políticas de los trabajadores del cobre,
de sus familias, y de los norteamericanos que llegaron a administrar uno de los minerales más ricos de Chile.
Julio, el protagonista, es un joven dirigente sindical que lucha por los derechos de los obreros. Con la misma
pasión con que manifiesta sus ideales, se enamora de Berta, la hija de un minero escéptico, que ya no tiene fe
en el futuro. Juntos deben enfrentar primero la segregación, la falta de libertad y las normas de vida
impuestas por los norteamericanos a los habitantes del campamento y luego los cambios sociales y políticos
durante las etapas de chilenización y nacionalización del cobre.
Con una atractiva forma de narración, la autora logra una novela llena de realismo y sentimientos, en la que
conviven el amor y el desencuentro, la lucha y la esperanza, plasmando lo estético con la búsqueda de las
raíces de una ciudad que hoy es Patrimonio de la Humanidad.
