of circles. In graphics, circles are the new squares. For
humans, circles are the most natural shape, the one we
have the most comfortable relationship with. This paper
takes advantage of that, using the shape to make dense
information more approachable.

Cutting across many topics, it’s extremely well done.
You could trust this individual to interpret and simplify
anything. You get the sense you could throw the most
complex matter at this person and know you’ll receive
clarity on the page. And you appreciate the technique and
range of styles that really make this portfolio stand out.

elicits strong emotional reactions. The
beauty draws you in, then the subject

Any one of the individual illustrations will
draw you in, then you’re compelled to
investigate the entire range. It isn’t over
the top and exploited; it shows restraint,
within the depth of the gruesomeness.
This transcends the level of illustration
and becomes art. It is something you have
never seen before. If it isn’t gold, what is?

before, but the voice and humor here are

this page. It’s brilliant, a huge surprise. It
gets better and better the more time you
spend with it. There’s plenty of fake funny
out there. This is really funny.

THIS IS AN EXERCISE IN HOW TO DESIGN. The
illustrations are amazing, showcasing the state of the
art in layout, illustration and tonal and color palettes.
There’s nothing to fault; they’ve gone through every stage
and thought hard about it. On even the small touches of
typography and the small map, the tonal qualities are
elegant and considered. Nothing shouts. Every element
frames the illustration and gives it movement. That’s a
tiger of an art director. It’s crazy good.
SILVER
INCREDIBLE. THE ILLUSTRATIONS work on many levels.
It’s not overly complicated. It challenges the traditional
way we look at collectible sections. The gold colors work
on one level, the black and white on another. There’s
incredible consistency throughout, but it doesn’t feel
one-note. The moment we saw this, we thought, “Wow!
It’s fantastic!” It’s so well put together, so well printed,
exciting, inviting and thoughtful.
ORO
ESTO ES TODO UN EJERCICIO DE DISEÑO. Las

punishment they have put their feet through. We see
the players in an intimate and slightly vulnerable
state. Each set of feet reveals rich detail, such as sock
impressions, scars and battered toenails. The decision
to play the heads and feet at the same size pushes the
design beyond the norm. The rhythm of each spread
does not feel repetitious because of the variety of the
expressions and profiles. Each spread features 20
questions with the athlete as well as fun breakouts,
such as his shoe size.

magazine cover; the feet are ugly and exposed with
veins, sock marks and battered toenails. This cover
says so much, not just about the player but also about
the country and soccer — and it does it without any

THESE PHOTOGRAPHS were taken
during a four-hour period while visiting
Shabunda in South Kivu in the Democratic
Republic of the Congo. The women each
wrote down a few details before they sat
for the portraits: name, age, hometown, if
they have any children, marital status and
who raped them. The answer to the latter
is mostly “men in uniform.” The directness
of the approach is simple but powerful
and sensitive to the subject matter.
The smaller pieces combine to make a
greater whole that creates a haunting
overall effect. It took very good planning
to pull this off.
