n factor determinante de la prosperidad
que ha caracterizado a nuestro estado a
lo largo de ms de un siglo, es el saberse
anticipar a los acontecimientos para actuar
oportunamente a favor de los legtimos intereses
de nuestra sociedad.
El Gobierno de Nuevo Len se enorgullece
de formar parte del conjunto de fuerzas que
han forjado el rumbo y progreso de nuestro
estado, y que nos ha convertido ya en un cono
del desarrollo de nuestro pas. La responsabilidad
que han asumido empresarios, acadmicos y
gobernantes para crear el Nuevo Len actual, es
ya una caracterstica de esfuerzo y superacin
que nos distingue.
Sociedad y Gobierno seguimos juntos
aprovechando las fortalezas y grandes
oportunidades que se nos presentan. Hemos
demostrado amplia capacidad para enfrentar
y superar contingencias naturales y sociales
de gran calado, sin dejar de atender, al mismo
tiempo, las necesidades ms inmediatas de la
poblacin en mayor desventaja y suministrando
servicios pblicos cada vez de mejor calidad.
An ms, en materia econmica hemos dado
grandes pasos para asegurar el crecimiento de
los sectores estratgicos con base en ventajas
competitivas y las nuevas tendencias de negocios,
con el n de generar fuentes de empleo de alto
valor agregado. En este contexto se enmarcan
grandes proyectos de atraccin de inversin en
infraestructura para la industria, el comercio y
los servicios.
Entre dichos proyectos destaca el de
convertir a Nuevo Len en un polo de desarrollo
energtico sostenible en el contexto de las
recientes modicaciones institucionales en el
mbito federal, para que local y nacionalmente
contemos con el suministro adecuado de energa.
En este marco se inscriben la construccin de
un gasoducto que contar con un ramal para
la provisin de gas industrial y domstico en
la regin Citrcola, y el arranque del proyecto
Monterrey VI, que asegurar el suministro de
agua para la zona metropolitana en el largo
plazo.
Para acrecentar la capacidad logstica
de nuestra economa est casi concluido el
Interpuerto Monterrey, que se desempear
como una muy importante plataforma comercial
para el crecimiento de los sectores estratgicos
y la integracin de cadenas de valor en nuestro
aparato productivo.
En el rubro de infraestructura para el transporte
pblico, estn en marcha la Ecova y la
construccin de la Lnea 3 del metro, proyectos
que brindarn un importante e indispensable
servicio a la poblacin e incrementarn la
funcionalidad y sustentabilidad de la zona
metropolitana. En materia de salud, se hallan ya
avanzados los trabajos de la construccin de tres
hospitales, incluido uno de alta especialidad, que
impulsar el desarrollo de un sector en el que
Nuevo Len ya es altamente competitivo.
Estos proyectos y muchos otros del Gobierno
del Estado en diversos mbitos, forman un
conjunto de acciones cuyo denominador comn
es la construccin de un potencial de crecimiento
digno de nuestra historia.
La edicin Doing Business in Nuevo Len 2014
resume las ventajas competitivas de Nuevo Len
y las virtudes de su capital humano, entre las
que destaca su liderazgo, carcter emprendedor,
espritu de trabajo y capacidad innovadora,
como factores que facilitan las estrategias de
colaboracin y competencia por el crecimiento
de Nuevo Len y de Mxico.

to act in a timely manner, for the sake of
the legitimate interests of our society is
a determining factor in gaining the prosperity
that has characterized our state for more than
a century.
The Government of Nuevo Leon is proud to
be a part of the coalition of forces steering the
course for the advancement of our state, a fact
that has turned us into an icon of development
in our country. The responsibility undertaken by
entrepreneurs, the academy, and government of-
cials to create what is already a current real-
ity in Nuevo Leon characterizes our well-known
spirit of hard work and self-improvement.
Society and the Government still go hand in
hand taking advantage of the strengths and big
opportunities in front of us. Our strong ability to
both face and overcome huge natural and social
contingencies, while addressing the immediate
needs of the disadvantaged population, help to
provide the best quality public services.
Furthermore, we have made huge economic
advances to secure the growth of the strategic
sectors based on our competitive edge and the
new business tendencies in order to create em-
ployment sources with a high added value. This is
the background for the great projects that will
attract investments in infrastructure for indus-
trial, commercial, and service activities.
These projects include turning Nuevo Leon
into a magnet for sustainable energy develop-
ment. In the context of recent institutional modi-
cations at the federal level, in order to maintain
an adequate supply of energy, both locally and
nationally. In this setting, we point to several ex-
amples, such as the building of a gas duct with a
branch to provide industrial and home gas to the
Citrus Region, as well as starting the Monterrey
VI project securing the long term water supply
to the metropolitan area.
In order to increase the logistic capability
for our economy, Interport Monterrey is nearly
complete. It will be a very important commercial
platform for the growth of the strategic sectors
and the integration of value chains to our pro-
ductive system.
IIn public transportation infrastructure, the
Ecova bus line is being constructed, as well as
Line 3 of our subway system. These projects will
provide a signicant and essential service to the
population and will increase the functionality
and sustainability of the Metropolitan area. In
the health care eld, the construction of three
hospitals is well under way. One of them is a
highly specialized hospital positioned to boost
Nuevo Leons development in this highly com-
petitive eld.
These and many other projects of the state
government in various elds are building growth
worthy of our history.
The Doing Business in Nuevo Len 2014
edition sums up the competitive advantages of
Nuevo Leon and the virtues of its work force, in-
cluding leadership, entrepreneurship, hard work,
their ability to innovate. These abilities favor
strategies of collaboration and competitiveness
for the sake of growth in Nuevo Leon and Mexico.

L LUGAR ALCANZADO POR NUEVO LEN en el
contexto regional, nacional y global se debe
a mltiples factores entre los que destacan:
una herencia empresarial e industrial que inici
hace 150 aos; una cultura del trabajo que para
la poblacin signica sentido de responsabilidad,
compromiso, deseo de aprender, y apoyo a
procesos de mejora continua; una ubicacin
estratgica apoyada por infraestructura que se
moderniza constantemente y capital humano en
continua superacin.
Nuevo Len ya es reconocido actualmente
como el Estado ms competitivo de Mxico
por su enorme capacidad de atraer inversiones
y talento; el ms diversicado en el norte de
Mxico por su amplia base de insumos y servicios
que provee con calidad y a tiempo; y el ms
globalizado ya que su economa se enlaza al
exterior a travs de mltiples redes creadas por
sus grandes empresas nacionales y extranjeras.
Nuevo Len con el 4% de la poblacin aport
en 2013 a la nacin el 7.5% del PIB, el 11% de las
manufacturas, el 11% de las exportaciones, el 10%
de la IED, y el 9% del empleo formal. Su ingreso
per cpita de 20,000 dlares es prcticamente el
doble que el promedio nacional, es superior al de
Chile, y se aproxima al de la Repblica Checa.
El Gobierno del Estado destaca a nivel
nacional por sus polticas pblicas. En materia de
desarrollo econmico fue el primero en impulsar
la formacin de clsteres estratgicos como
estrategia de competitividad. Este ao Nuevo
Len ser la sede del dcimo sptimo Congreso
Mundial de Clsteres.
Es el nico estado que cuenta con un
Centro de Vinculacin Empresarial que desarrolla
proveedores y los vincula con las grandes
empresas nacionales y extranjeras. Por ejemplo
en el sector automotriz se identicaron 232
componentes que estn siendo elaborados por
111 PyMes del estado. Este exitoso programa
de integracin de cadenas productivas se
intensicar este ao para abarcar otros
clsteres no solo estatales, sino tambin
regionales.
Est en marcha el Centro de Procesamiento
Logstico para estandarizar prcticas en materia
scal, aduanal y de seguridad para el comercio
exterior en apoyo a las Mipymes de Nuevo Len.

Por otro lado el lanzamiento del Plan Sectorial
de Energa consolida a Nuevo Len como un
estado de avanzada, al ser el primero en sumarse
al esfuerzo del Gobierno Federal y apoyar la
Reforma Energtica con lneas de accin y metas
bien denidas.
Con la creacin de la Subsecretara de
Energa se atendern oportunidades en las
reas de hidrocarburos, electricidad y energas
renovables, con la nalidad de atraer inversiones
nacionales y extranjeras de por lo menos mil 500
millones de dlares en 2014.
El reto es que la suma total de inversin
supere los ms de 3,500 mdd del ao anterior.
Doing Business 2014 ser una herramienta
fundamental para dicha meta.

UEVO LEON RANKS HIGH IN REGIONAL,
domestic and global contexts for many
reasons, including: an entrepreneurship
and industrial heritage that started 150 years
ago and a culture of hard work which, for the
common man, means a sense of responsibility
and commitment, a desire to learn, and to
continue to improve. These attributes along with
a strong infrastructure and strategic location are
what keep Nuevo Leon at the top.
Nuevo Leon has been acknowledged as the
most competitive state in Mexico because of its
ability to attract both investments and talent.
It is also the most diversied state in Northern
Mexico due to a deep pool of quality supplies
and services with timely delivery. Its strong
global appeal with an economy that reaches
through multiple networks was created through
large domestic companies as well as foreign
enterprises.
With 4% of the national population, Nuevo
Leon produced 7.5% of Mexicos national GDP, 11%
of its manufacturers, 11% of its exports, 10% of
its FDI, and 9% of its formal employment. Its per
capita income of USD $20,000 is virtually double
the national average and is higher than Chiles
and close to Czech Republics levels.
On the domestic side, the public policies
of the state government are outstanding. In
economic development, it was the rst state
to promote forming strategic clusters as a
competitive strategy. In 2014, Nuevo Leon will
host the 17th World Congress of Clusters.
It is the only state with a Business Relations
Center to help suppliers develop their business
and link them with both domestic and foreign
corporations. A prime example is the 111 small
and medium sized companies in the state now
making 232 diferent components identied for
use in the automotive sector. This successful
program designed for the integration of product
chains will intensify in 2014 to include other
clusters both at the state and regional level.
The Center for Logistic Processing is under
way to standardize practices in the tax, customs
and safety elds of foreign trade in support
of micro, small, and medium sized companies
(Mipymes, in Spanish) in Nuevo Leon.
On the other hand, the launch of the
Sectoral Plan for Energy launches Nuevo Leon as
a front-runner state in the eld, being the rst
to support the federal governments efort in
support of the Energy Reform with well dened
lines of action and goals.
With the creation of the post of
Undersecretary of Energy, attention will be paid
to opportunities in the areas of hydrocarbons,
electricity, and renewable energies. The goal is
to attract domestic and foreign investments
totaling at least USD $1,500 millions in 2014.
The challenge is for the whole investment
to top the USD $3.5 billion that was reached the
previous year. Doing Business 2014 will be a vital
tool in achieving that goal.

NUEVO LEN surge a mediados del siglo
XIX cuando se fundaron en la Sultana
de Norte algunas de las productoras
ms importantes de textiles, cerveza
y acero. Su rpida evolucin las llev a
diversicarse en otros sectores como el
vidrio, metal-mecnico y cemento (entre
otros), dando pie al nacimiento de otras
importantes compaas e instituciones
educativas como la Universidad
Autnoma de Nuevo Len (UANL), el
Tecnolgico de Monterrey (ITESM) y la
Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM), las
cuales colocaron a la entidad como
uno de los principales lderes en la
formacin de profesionistas en estas
reas.
El crecimiento ha sido sostenido
y en las ltimas dcadas dio paso
al surgimiento de otros sectores
dinmicos como el de auto partes, el
equipo electrnico, electrodomsticos,
de alimentos procesados, desarrollo de
software y servicios nancieros.
Nuevo Len destaca por su
economa en boga, pues en el 2013,
el estado represent el 11% de la
produccin total del pas, un logro de
su poblacin altamente conocida por
su cultura emprendedora, actitud de
servicio y por ser semillero de talentos
directivos.
Hoy por hoy, los regiomontanos
destacan en el mundo a travs de
empresas como Fomento Econmico
Mexicano (FEMSA), Grupo Bimbo, Grupo
Maseca (Gruma) y Arca Continental,
las cuales formaron parte del top 250
del ranking mundial de empresas que
tienen ventas superiores a los $3 mil
millones de dlares. De acuerdo a un
reporta dado conocer por Deloitte,
estas empresas tambin son parte
del top 10 de las ms destacadas en
Latinoamrica.
NUEVO LEONS MANUFACTURING
HERITAGE began in the mid 19th
century when some of the most
important foundations of Mexican
industry were being in what became
known as the Sultana of the North,
Monterrey. These iconic companies
made history as the most important
producers of textiles, beer, and steel at
the time. These same companies began
to quickly evolve towards diversication
into other sectors; including glass,
metal-mechanics, and cement. This
facilitated the emergence of important
educational institutions, including
Universidad Autnoma de Nuevo Len
(UANL), Tecnolgico de Monterrey
(ITESM), and Universidad de Monterrey
(UDEM). These universities have turned
the state into a driving force in the
shaping of professionals for these
industries.
Growth has been steady and in the
last few decades led to the appearance
of other dynamic sectors, including

Nuevo Leon is truly an economy
with wind in its sails, delivering 11% of
the total manufacturing production in
Mexico for 2013. This achievement is
credited to the states people, known
for their entrepreneurship and spirit of
service. Nuevo Leon is a proud cultivator
of executive talent.
Many global executives hail from
Monterrey and represent successful
worldwide companies such as Fomento
Econmico Mexicano (FEMSA), Grupo
Bimbo, Grupo Maseca (Gruma), and Arca

ranked in the top 250 of companies
with sales over USD $3 billion, according
a report by American company, Deloitte.

La primera aduana binacional del Noreste

INTERPUERTO MONTERREY es uno
de los proyectos ms importantes
de la ltima dcada en Nuevo Len,
su objetivo principal es ser el puerto
interior ms grande de Mxico;
y es que, debido a su excelente
ubicacin geogrca, se pudo crear
este espacio donde las necesidades
del empresario son satisfechas
en un mismo nodo logstico y
de manufactura. Desde su inicio
en junio del 2012, la inversin ha
superado los dos mil millones de
dlares.
Otro de sus objetivos es liberar a
Monterrey y su zona metropolitana
del transporte de carga pesada que
circula en vehculos o ferrocarriles
por sus principales calles y avenidas.
Actualmente, el 60% del comercio
con el pas vecino atraviesa la
zona conurbada de la capital
regiomontana.
Interpuerto Monterrey es una obra
encaminada a liderar como la
primera aduana binacional al contar
con la participacin de autoridades
federales de los Estados Unidos en
territorio neolons.
Se desarrolla en un predio
de 1,350 hectreas localizado
en Salinas Victoria, a escasos
kilmetros de las autopistas y
carreteras a Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa
y Saltillo, as como tambin a las
vas frreas a Tampico, Nuevo Laredo
y Matamoros, y del Aeropuerto
Internacional del Norte. Adems, su
cercana con la frontera a Estados
Unidos permite una mayor eciencia
y ahorro de tiempo en el manejo
de manufactura y distribucin de
mercancas.
INTERPORT MONTERREY is one
of the most important strategic
projects in the last decade for
Nuevo Leon. Its goal is to become
the largest inland port in Mexico.
Its excellent geographical location
has provided a space that lls the
needs of entrepreneurs in a single
logistics and manufacturing hub.
Since its inception in June 2012, the
investment has exceeded USD $2
billion.
Another goal is to alleviate
trafc in Monterreys metropolitan
area caused by heavy cargo that
has to travel through city streets in
road vehicles and trains. Currently,

national customs with U.S. federal

It is being developed on 3,335.92

to the railways of Tampico, Nuevo

Del Norte International Airport.

and time saved in the handling of

Technological Research and Innovation Park (PIIT)
EXISTE EN NUEVO LEN un espacio geogrco en
el que convergen sociedad, gobierno e iniciativa
privada bajo un mismo propsito: promover un
crecimiento econmico sostenido a travs de la
innovacin y desarrollo de nuevas tecnologas
utilizando la investigacin y transferencia
de informacin entre el sector acadmico y
empresarial.
El Parque de Investigacin e Innovacin
Tecnolgica (PIIT) ubicado en Nuevo Len fue
concebido como un modelo de parque tecnolgico
y cientco de cuarta generacin basado en un
modelo de triple hlice, es decir, estableciendo
alianzas entre gobierno, universidades locales y
la iniciativa privada con el objetivo de desarrollar
capital intelectual de Nuevo Len.
En su primera etapa, el PIIT empez su
construccin en una supercie de 70 hectreas
(que se ha ido incrementando) donde las empresas
interesadas han encontrado infraestructura y
servicios de clase mundial para albergar sus
centros de investigacin dedicados a I+D, y al
desarrollo de compaas en base al uso de alta
tecnologa.
Para formar parte de este complejo
de investigacin, los interesados requieren
presentar un proyecto relacionado con las
reas de tecnologa, software, nanotecnologa
y biotecnologa. Una vez aprobado, la compaa
podr empezar a construir su centro de
investigacin exclusivamente, ya que en este
espacio no se contempla la produccin o maquila
de ningn artculo o producto.
IN NUEVO LEON, there is a geographical space

The PIIT began construction on 173 acres and is
still growing. Stakeholders have found world-
class infrastructure and services for their
research centers and company development

To be a part of this research complex,
stakeholders must produce a project related
to technology, software, nanotechnology, and
biotechnology. Once the project is approved, the
company can start building its research-only
center. No production or manufacture of any
good or item can take place.

En Nuevo Len, los esfuerzos por establecer
programas permanentes de apoyo a las
MIPYMES han sido muy fructferos al existir por
lo menos siete de estos organismos, tanto en
el rea gubernamental como privada, trabajando

de manera oportuna, pero sobre todo, eciente a
quien lo solicite.

According to the U.S. Business Administration,
the global experience tells that somewhere
between 50 and 80% of new companies fall
in their rst ve years; but 87% of companies

EL DESARROLLO DE MEDIDAS EFECTIVAS para
proteger el medio ambiente es uno de los retos de
mayor importancia que actualmente enfrentan
sociedad y gobierno. Y es que, ante el cambio
climtico, la contaminacin, sobreexplotacin
y degradacin de los recursos naturales y la
prdida de la biodiversidad, entre otros, ha
encaminado a las autoridades y a la ciudadana a
elaborar propuestas especcas, como la creacin
de un observatorio de sustentabilidad bajo la
coordinacin del estado y la UANL, un programa
de respuesta a contingencias atmosfricas
para el rea metropolitana de Monterrey, un
manual para el manejo responsable de llantas
de desecho, as como un sistema integral de
monitoreo ambiental.
Sobre este tema, el INEGI 2013 reere que
los servicios de agua potable, alcantarillado
y tratamiento de aguas residuales en Nuevo
Len son actualmente de los ms cumplidos
en el pas. Los 51 municipios del estado tienen
agua potable de la red pblica; de estos, el 96%
cuentan con servicio de alcantarillado y el 61%
dan tratamiento al menos a una parte de sus
aguas residuales.
Esta depuracin de carga contaminante se
realiza en 52 plantas o sitios, donde se realizan
procesos de los denominados, tipo secundario
o convencional, como ltros biolgicos, lodos
activados y sistema dual, principalmente.
El tema de los residuos slidos urbanos tiene
tambin una gran relevancia ambiental en virtud
del impacto que tienen sobre los ecosistemas
terrestres y acuticos y sus afectaciones a la
ora y fauna. En tierras neoleonesas, todos
los municipios cuentan con los servicios de
recoleccin y disposicin nal de residuos y, de
estos, 14 dan tratamiento al menos a una parte
de sus desechos.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF EFFECTIVE MEASURES
to protect the environment is one of the
most important challenges faced both by
government and society. Climate change,
pollution, overexploitation and degradation of
natural resources, and loss of biodiversity have
led authorities and citizens to come up with
diferent ways to monitor the environment.
Specic proposals have included the creation of
a sustainability observatory coordinated by the
state of Nuevo Leon and UANL with a response
program for weather contingencies in the
Monterrey metropolitan area, a handbook for the
responsible management of tire waste, as well
as a comprehensive system for protecting and
monitoring the environment.
A 2013 INEGI survey states that the drinking
water, sewage and wastewater treatment
services in Nuevo Leon are the most efective
services of their kind in the country. The 51
townships in the state use drinking water from
the public system. Out of those, 96% have a
sewage system and 61% treat at least a part of
their wastewater.
The purication of pollutants takes place in
52 plants or locations with so called secondary or
conventional type processes, such as biological
lters, activated sludge and dual system.
Urban solid waste is also environmentally
relevant due to its impact on water and land
ecosystems and their ora and fauna. In Nuevo
Leon, all townships have garbage collection and
nal waste disposal. Treatment is performed on
at least a part of their wastes in 14 cities.

SHALE GAS A MARKET WITH GREAT OPPORTUNITIES
EN LA ACTUALIDAD, NUEVO LEN ocupa el primer lugar en materia
de generacin de energa elctrica y gas en Mxico; por lo que no es de
extraar que fuera el primer estado en levantar la mano para aprovechar
y potencializar los benecios de la reforma energtica mediante la
implementacin de un plan estratgico, que promueve el desarrollo y
explotacin de la Cuenca de Burgos a travs de la extraccin de gas shale.
Nuevo Len es la primera entidad en crear una Subsecretaria de Energa
para atender especcamente los puntos establecidos en la reforma
energtica. Adems, es considerado lder de la denominada economa del
conocimiento o mentefactura.
El 2013 cerr con un ingreso de $1,500 millones de dlares de inversin
extranjera directa en estos rubros.
Se prev que la extraccin del gas shale detonar una larga cadena
en el abastecimiento de electricidad, agua y gas, lo cual comprende de
comercializacin, desarrollo de industrias proveedoras de suministros
(instalaciones elctricas, tuberas, renacin de petrleo, etc.); construccin,
alimentos, transporte y capital humano, entre otros.
La Secretara de Desarrollo Econmico de Nuevo Len informa, en base a
datos del INEGI, que la actividad relacionada con la generacin, transmisin y
suministro de energa elctrica le brindar a la entidad un gran rendimiento.
Por lo que a partir del 2014, este sector ser uno de los de mayor prioridad
para el gobierno estatal y la industria local, ya que atraer mayores
inversiones en la generacin de energas renovables, como la elica y solar.
Hoy en da, Mxico es uno de los importadores netos de gas natural
ms importantes; se estima que con el desarrollo de la Cuenca de Burgos
se tendr una mayor disponibilidad del energtico a menor precio, lo
cual elevar la competitividad de los sectores consumidores y a su vez
desencadenar una baja de precios en distintos mercados nacionales.
Un estudio publicado por BBVA Bancomer reere que el eje conformado
por Nuevo Len, Coahuila, Tamaulipas y Texas ser en conjunto la zona de
mayor crecimiento industrial y comercial derivado de la reforma energtica.

TODAY, NUEVO LEON is rst in the production of electricity and gas in
Mexico; so it was a natural step when it became the rst state to begin
reaping the benets of the energy reform by implementing a strategic plan
promoting the development of the Burgos Basin and the extraction of its
shale gas.
Nuevo Leon is the rst state to create an Undersecretary of Energy
position to address the points set in the new energy reform. It is also
considered a leader of the so called economy of knowledge or mentefactura
(mind manufacturing).
2013 closed with a USD $1,500 million income from foreign direct
investment in these areas.
When you take a look at the big picture, the extraction of shale gas
jump starts a long chain of electricity, water, and gas suppliers along with
the related activities of marketing, development of supplier industries
(electric facilities, ducts, oil rening, etc.), construction, food industry,
transport, human capital.
Based on INEGI data, the Nuevo Leon Ministry of Economic Development
believes that the activities related to the creation, transmission, and supply
of electric power provide the state with many benets. According to the
ministry, beginning in 2014, this sector will become one of the highest
priorities for the state government and the local industry, attracting bigger
investments in renewable energies, such as wind and solar power.
Today, Mexico is one of biggest net importers of natural gas. However,
with the development of the Burgos Basin, experts predict that the higher
availability of energy will drive down the price. This could potentially push
competition in consumer sectors and in turn start a cut in prices for various
national markets.
BBVA Bancomer researched the industry and discovered that the axis
formed by Nuevo Leon, Coahuila, Tamaulipas, and Texas will have the highest
industrial and commercial growth stemming from the energy reform.

PEMEX estima que para el 2027 producir ms de la tercera parte
(35.8%) de la generacin de gas natural del pas.
Nuevo Len ocupa el primer lugar en cuanto a generacin de energa
elctrica y gas. Seguido de Mxico y Jalisco.
Nuevo Len es de los principales fabricantes y empleadores a nivel
nacional en la produccin de derivados del petrleo, que genera cerca
del 13% del empleo en esta actividad.
PEMEX cuenta con seis reneras: las principales estn ubicadas en
Salinas Cruz, Oaxaca y en Tula, Hidalgo. En tercer lugar se encuentra
Cadereyta, Nuevo Len, que mantiene el 16.2% de la produccin nacional.
En Texas, la industria del shale se ha desarrollado notablemente desde
el ao 2008.
Se cuentan actualmente entre 220 a 240 equipos de perforacin
repartidos entre unas 75 empresas que realizan actividades de
exploracin y produccin en el sur de Texas.
En promedio, el proceso de perforacin se lleva a cabo en 20 das, a veces
hasta 30-40, para lo que se usa equipo especializado, generalmente
plantas mviles.

earning a 16.2% share of national production.
In Texas, the shale industry has notably developed since 2008.
Currently, there are 220-240 drilling teams in about 75 companies that
are engaged in exploration and production activities in South Texas.
Drilling takes an average of 20 days and up to 40, most commonly using
specialized equipment, usually a mobile plant.

LA SITUACIN Y CONDICIONES GEOGRFICAS
QUE PREDOMINAN EN NUEVO LEN, junto a la
aprobacin de la reforma energtica, han abierto
mltiples oportunidades de inversin en la
denominada energa verde o alternativa.
El rubro en la entidad est formado por
la energa elica, solar y de reutilizacin de
desechos. Sobre stas fuentes energticas se ha
planteado una plataforma en la que autoridades,
iniciativa privada y organismos educativos
trabajan en conjunto con la explotacin del gas
shale y la industria petroqumica para atraer ms
inversin local, nacional y extranjera.
Este ao se anunci que el municipio de
Santa Catarina, donde ya existe una planta de
energa elica, abrir el Parque Elico Santa
Catarina II, el cual contar con una capacidad de
70 a 80 megawatts de energa para abastecer a
sus clientes. La inversin en alianza con capital
extranjero es de $160 millones de dlares.
Por su parte, Cemex construir dos parques
elicos con una inversin de $650 mdd, esto
como parte de su proyecto Ventika, que considera
la construccin de dos parques elicos de 126
megavatios cada uno.
Otros municipios considerados ideales por
sus condiciones geogrcas para construir este
tipo de plantas son Mina y Galeana.
En cuanto a inversin en energa solar,
el municipio de Apodaca se prepara para la
construccin de un parque de este tipo, que junto
con otro en Mina, tendr un costo estimado de
$400 mdd y podra generar unos 200 megawatts.

Pero no solo son los fuertes vientos tan
caractersticos de la regin y los ardientes
rayos de sol las nicas fuentes energticas a
las que han apostado los empresarios, Nuevo
Len ha trascendido fronteras gracias a la
reutilizacin de desechos orgnicos para obtener
biogs, combustible utilizado para alimentar el
alumbrado pblico del rea metropolitana y el
sistema de transporte Metro.
La empresa SIMEPRODE es la primera
en Mxico y Latinoamrica en reutilizar y
transformar los desechos orgnicos como
combustibles. La bioenerga cubre actualmente
el 82% de los requerimientos energticos de
ambas lneas del Metro de Monterrey.

THE LOCATION AND GEOGRAPHICAL CONDITIONS
IN NUEVO LEON, together with new energy
reform, are opening up many opportunities for
investment in the so-called green or alternative
energy eld.
As part of the states green initiative, wind
and solar power, as well as waste to energy
programs are now being ofered. Authorities, the
private sector and educational institutions are
collaborating on a new platform that revolves
around these energy sources. The addition of
shale gas and the petrochemical industry are
also shaping the market, making it capable of
attracting more local, domestic, and foreign
investments.
Early this year, it was announced that the
township of Santa Catarina would add a second
wind power plant to be named Parque Elico
Santa Catarina II with a 70 to 80-megawatt
capacity to supply customers. The joint
investment with foreign capital is predicted to
reach USD $160 million.
Cemex plans to build two wind parks with
an investment of USD $650 million as part of its
Ventika project, projecting two wind parks to be
built with a capacity of 126 megawatts each.
Other townships considered to have ideal
geographical conditions for this type of plant
are: Mina and Galeana.
As to the power investment in Apodaca, a
plant is in the early stages of development, as well
as a wind power park in Mina. The construction
of both parks will cost approximately USD
$400 million and early estimates are that this
combination of plants could generate about 200
megawatts.
Its not only the strong winds and the
scorching sun, both common features in the
region that energy source entrepreneurs are
betting on. Nuevo Leon is settling a worldwide
example by reusing organic wastes to obtain
biogas, a fuel used in metropolitan area public
lightening systems and in the Metro transport
system.
SIMEPRODE is the rst corporation in Mexico
and Latin America to reuse and transform
organic wastes into fuel. Bioenergy sources
currently cover 82% of all energy needs in both
lines of Metro de Monterrey.

EN LOS RAMONES, NUEVO LEN inici la
construccin de un gasoducto, cuya participacin
(en su primera etapa) es 100% de empresarios
mexicanos. La empresa neoleonesa Tubacero
aportar la manufactura de alrededor de 355 mil
toneladas de ductos de acero, con los que se van
a construir los primeros 118 kilmetros de la obra.
Autoridades de PEMEX informaron que el
gasoducto, que correr de Tamaulipas al centro
del pas y concluir a nales de 2015, aportar un
incremento de hasta el 40% de la capacidad de
transporte de gas en Mxico, lo que garantiza el
abasto de gas a precios competitivos.
El proyecto abastecer cerca del 20% de la
demanda de gas natural del pas, que calculan
crecer en los prximos 15 aos, un promedio
anual de 2.9%. Cabe destacar que esta obra es la
de mayor transporte de gas en Mxico en cuatro
dcadas y tendr la capacidad de satisfacer la
demanda del combustible en el centro-occidente
del pas.
Al arranque de los trabajos asistieron
empresarios mexicanos, directivos de PEMEX y
funcionarios del gobierno, quienes prometieron
a los capitanes de empresa que la asignacin
de contratos a compaas mexicanas seguir
ocurriendo a lo largo de toda la construccin
del Proyecto de Transporte de gas natural Los
Ramones.
El gasoducto est proyectado en tres
etapas de construccin con una extensin total
de mil 21 kilmetros y una inversin superior a los
$2 mil 500 millones de dlares.
El primer tramo ir de Ciudad Camargo,
Tamaulipas, a Los Ramones, Nuevo Len. El
segundo medir 702 kilmetros y se dividi en
dos partes: 442 km. de Los Ramones a Villa
Hidalgo, San Luis Potos (parte norte) y 260 km.
de San Luis Potos a Apaseo El Alto, Guanajuato
(parte sur).
La construccin de la parte sur estar
a cargo de la desarrolladora mexicana ICA,
mientras que la norte, algunas fuentes cercanas
al proyecto indican que la har la regiomontana
Arendal.
La construccin de este gasoducto detona
en una primera etapa el polo de desarrollo de la
zona citrcola, ya que dentro del mismo, habr un
ramal en Linares para abastecer el combustible
a este municipio y a Montemorelos.
THE CONSTRUCTION OF A GAS PIPELINE IN LOS
RAMONES, NUEVO LEON, began with 100%
participation (in its rst stage) of Mexican
entrepreneurs. Tubacero, from Nuevo Leon, will
provide for the manufacturing of about 355,000
tons of steel ducts to build the rst 73.5 miles.
PEMEX authorities predict the gas pipeline,
stretching from Tamaulipas to the central part
of the country, will be nished by the end of
2015. It will mean a 40% increase in (current) gas
delivery capabilities in Mexico. This should sure a
long-term gas supply at competitive prices.
The project is expected to supply about
20% of the natural gas demand for the country,
which is estimated to grow an annual average of
2.9% each year for the next 15 years. Due to its
capacity to provide fuel in central and western
parts of the country, this work has been the
largest in the gas transport area in Mexico over
the last four decades.
Mexican entrepreneurs, PEMEX executives,
and government ofcials were all on hand
for the start of this project and ensured the
assignment of construction contracts would go
to companies headquartered in Mexico as this
project was completed.
The gas pipeline project has been broken down
into three building stages with a total length of
634.7 miles and an investment of over USD $2.5
million.
The rst stage will go from Ciudad Tamargo,
Tamaulipas, to Los Ramones, Nuevo Leon.
The second stage will be 436.3 miles long,
broken down into two parts: 274.1 miles from
Los Ramones to Villa Hidalgo, San Luis Potosi
(northern part), and 161.9 miles from San Luis
Potosi to Apaseo El Alto, Guanajuato (southern
part).
The construction of the southern part will
be performed by ICA, a Mexican developer, while
the northern part will be done by Arendal, from
Nuevo Leon, according project sources.
This gas pipeline construction sparks the
development of a new growth for the citric
region, with a branch line in Linares to provide
fuel for this township as well as Montemorelos.

aeroespacial en Nuevo Len ha cumplido cabalmente

El Centro de Investigacin e Innovacin en Ingeniera
Aeronutica (CIIIA) de la Universidad Autnoma de Nuevo
Len, inform que, para este 2014, se estima que la
inversin en aeronutica en el Estado sea 25% superior
con respecto a lo registrado en el 2013.

NUEVO LEN TRASCIENDE FRONTERAS por su
industria, infraestructura, servicios mdicos
y educacin, pero tambin por su tierra frtil
y generosa que regala frutos a miles de
agricultores que lideran el mercado nacional
en hortalizas, ctricos y cereales. Las ramas ms
importantes son la molienda de trigo, carnes y
lcteos, cerveza y malta, y refrescos y aguas.
En las exportaciones, el sector agroindustrial
de Nuevo Len es conocido por la gran calidad
de sus hortalizas, frutas, cereales, harinas y
productos de pastelera, as como artculos de
contera, bebidas, lquidos alcohlicos y vinagre.
El Clster Agroalimentario en Nuevo Len
(AgroCluster), es una asociacin civil que se gest
bajo la participacin de empresas, instituciones
acadmicas y dependencias gubernamentales
para fomentar el desarrollo de la cadena de valor
agroalimentaria en el estado; y, bajo la premisa
de mejorar la competividad y sustentabilidad
de este sector, brindando a sus integrantes
todas las facilidades para acceder a mercados
internacionales mediante el desarrollo de
capital humano especializado y el impulso a la
Innovacin y transferencia tecnolgica.
En 2013, Nuevo Len registr $659 millones
de dlares en inversin extranjera directa.
ProMxico indic en su informe, de febrero del
2014, que de los 4 mil 557 productos exportables
registrados, Nuevo Len se encuentra entre
los cinco ms importantes en este rubro que
concentra el 52% de la produccin del pas.
Jalisco (711 del total), el Distrito Federal (543),
Estado de Mxico (422), Nuevo Len (353) y
Puebla (341).
De las 32 entidades, 14 reportaron un alza en los
registros de los productos exportables.
Nuevo Len lider la lista con ms de 72.
En el 2012 incorpor 29, mientras que en
el 2013, 101.
En lo que respecta a la exportacin de carne
al cierre del 2013, se enviaron al mercado
internacional 142,000 toneladas de bovino, de
las cuales, el 30% se produce en la zona noreste.
Gracias al sabor y calidad de su carne, Nuevo
Len es uno de los estados con mayor nivel de
exportacin a pases como Estados Unidos, Japn,
Corea, Puerto Rico y Rusia.

wheat milling, meat and dairies, beer and malt,
sodas and water products.
In exports, the agro-industrial sector in
Nuevo Leon is known for the outstanding quality
of its vegetables, fruits, grains, our and pastries,
as well as confectionery products, drinks,
alcoholic beverages and vinegar.
The Cluster Agroalimentario (AgroCluster) in
Nuevo Leon is a non-prot organization nurtured
by the participation of corporations, academic
institutions and government agencies to
promote the development of the agro-food value
chain in the state under the premise of improving
the competitiveness and sustainability of the
sector, providing every member with access to
international markets by developing specialized
human resources while boosting innovation and
technological transfer.
In 2013, Nuevo Leon received USD $659
million in foreign direct investment.
ProMexico pointed out in its February 2014
report that of the 4,557 exportable products
currently registered, Nuevo Leon is in the top ve
states in this sector that makes up 52% of the
domestic production.

EL CLSTER AUTOMOTRIZ Y DE AUTOPARTES
DE NUEVO LEN est integrado por empresas
fabricantes de camiones ligeros y pesados como
por empresas de autopartes, de las cuales un
50% (aproximadamente) son de origen extranjero
y el resto nacionales. En la ltima dcada, la
industria ha mantenido un importante desarrollo,
ubicndola como una de las de mayor crecimiento
econmico local y nacional.
A este sector, Nuevo Len suma alrededor
de $1.6 millones de dlares anualmente por la
produccin de partes automotrices, situndolo
entre los primeros cinco lugares en el top 10
nacional del giro manufacturero.
Para apoyar la competitividad de estas
industrias, actualmente se trabaja en un
laboratorio virtual para vincular empresas e
instituciones de educacin superior por medio de
10 comits de trabajo.
La produccin de cabezas de cilindro, motores,
bateras para automvil, vidrio y arneses lideran
el ranking nacional; mientras que en el segundo
lugar sobresale la produccin de camiones y
autobuses, equipo elctrico y electrnico, y
plstico para la industria automotriz terminal.
Tambin se produce carroceras, transmisiones,
frenos, asientos, cuo de metal, llantas, sistemas
de direccin y suspensin, entre muchas otras
cosas.
Al cierre del 2012 la produccin en Mxico
concret un nivel rcord de $75 mdd desbancando
a Corea del Sur y colocndose como el quinto
productor a nivel mundial.
Informacin del Gobierno de Nuevo Len
y del CLAUT revela que las exportaciones del
sector automotriz en el 2012 en la entidad
ascendieron a $7.5 mdd, mientras que en 2013, la
inversin extranjera fue de $870 mdd y se estima
que en el 2014 sea un 5 % ms alta.
La produccin en el Noreste de Mxico,
integrado por Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo
Len y Tamaulipas, se enfoca a la fabricacin
de sistemas de aire acondicionado, sistemas
automotores, piezas de plstico, partes para
el sistema elctrico y partes para el motor y
maquinados.

in Nuevo Leon is made up of lightweight and
heavy weight truck manufactures as well as
spare part companies. Approximately half are
foreign corporations and the remaining are
domestic. In the last decade, the industry has
undergone signicant growth, making it one of
the industries with the highest economic growth
both locally and domestically.
Nuevo Leon contributes USD $1,6 billion
a year to this industry by manufacturing auto
parts. This gure places the sector in the top 5
of Mexicos manufacturing industry.
In order to support the competitiveness
of these industries, there is work under way in
a virtual lab and in outreach projects linking
corporations and higher education institutions,
which meet in 10 task force committees.
The production of cylinder heads, engines,
auto batteries, glass and straps tops the
domestic ranking. It is second in the production
of trucks and buses, electric and electronic
equipment, as well as plastic parts for the auto
manufacturing industry. Many other things are
produced too, including bodywork, transmissions,
breaks, seats, metal wedges, tires, steering gears
and suspension systems.
By the end of 2012, production in Mexico
reached an all time high of USD $75 bllion,
overtaking South Korea for the fth position in
the world producer list.
The government of Nuevo Leon and CLAUT
information reveals exports in the auto industry
for 2012 totaled USD $7.5 billion and foreign
investments for 2013 reached USD $870 million,

LA BIOTECNOLOGA SE BASA en el estudio
e interaccin de la tecnologa aplicada a
mecanismos e interacciones biolgicas de los
seres vivos, especialmente los unicelulares, a
travs de un amplio campo multidisciplinario.
La Organizacin para la Cooperacin y
Desarrollo Econmicos (OCDE) dene el estudio
de sta ciencia como la aplicacin de principios
de la ciencia y la ingeniera para tratamientos de
materiales orgnicos e inorgnicos por sistemas
biolgicos para producir bienes y servicios. Rama
que es utilizada desde hace varias dcadas en la
mejora de los procesos que se llevan a cabo en la
agricultura, farmacia, alimentos, medio ambiente
y medicina, entre otros.
En Nuevo Len, siempre bajo la premisa de
impulsar el aprendizaje empresarial y el
desarrollo de sus miembros, se cre el Clster
Biotecnolgico del Estado de Nuevo Len, el
cual, desde su nacimiento, se ha abocado a
impulsar proyectos de alta tecnologa mediante
la investigacin y capacitacin de socios,
profesionistas y estudiantes aliados.
Para este 2014, la Secretaria de Economa
inform que la fraccin del presupuesto que se
asignar al rubro de investigacin y desarrollo
ser superior a la del 2013, el cual fue de un 30%.

of knowledge, goods and services. This branch
of science has been used for several decades
to improve processes in many elds, including
agriculture, pharmaceutics, foods, environment,
and medicine.
In Nuevo Leon, always under the premise
of promoting corporate learning and member
development, the non-prot association Clster
Biotecnolgico del Estado de Nuevo Len
(Biotechnology Cluster in the State of Nuevo
Leon) was created to boost high technology
projects through research and training for
afliated partners, specialists and students.
The Ministry of Economy projects the
budget share for research and development will
grow from its 2013 total, when it was 30%.

Ubicada a slo 215 KM (2 horas) de la frontera,

que realiza el Clster de Electrodomsticos en
Nuevo Len (CLELAC), el cual ha mantenido bajo
un mismo esquema de trabajo e investigacin
al gobierno, empresas y universidades. La
poltica principal del sector es la innovacin y
el desarrollo de productos, servicios y procesos
amigables con el medio ambiente; as como
promover y premiar el talento humano, la
capacitacin y, por supuesto, la promocin del
empleo.

LOS MEDIOS INTERACTIVOS DIGITALES se
ha convertido en uno de los negocios ms
redituables de la ltima dcada, y es que, debido
a su capacidad de interaccin activa (ujo de
informacin en dos sentidos, entre usuario y
medio) se ha convertido en parte de la vida vida
cotidiana de muchos nios, jvenes y adultos.
En Mxico, esta industria se compone
principalmente de micro y pequeas empresas
que participan en un amplio rango de actividades
que van desde la televisin interactiva, hasta la
animacin, cine y especialmente videojuegos, los
cuales, adems de redituarles grandes ganancias
y ganar terreno en la vida diaria, tambin
fomentan la creacin de empleos de alto valor
agregado.
El estado de Nuevo Len, siempre a la
vanguardia en este y otros rubros, ha consolidado
un crecimiento de ms del 30% en sus ventas
anuales, segn inform el al Consejo Ciudadano
del Clster de Medios Interactivos. Este comit
report que, para el 2013, se haban integrado
a sus las poco ms de 150 empresas locales,
de las 250 que se sabe de su existencia en la
entidad. Adems de las ventas que se reportan
en millones de pesos al ao, se gener un
importante aumento de contrataciones, las
cuales subieron de 700 a mil 700 tan solo los
ltimos dos aos.
La mayora de estas compaas llevan a cabo
proyectos como el desarrollo de aplicaciones de
gestin de microempresas a travs de la nube
a muy bajo costo, videojuegos y, en menor
produccin, cine.
NO DOUBT, THE INTERACTIVE DIGITAL MEDIA
INDUSTRY has turned into one of the most
protable businesses in the last decade. Due
to its active interaction in the form of an often
two-way ow of information between the user
and the (digital) medium, it has become vital in
the lives of many children, youth and adults.
In Mexico, this industry is basically made
up of micro and small companies participating
in a wide range of activities from interactive
television to animation, movies and, especially,
video games which, apart from producing huge
returns and being ever more pervasive in daily
life, also boost the creation of high added value
jobs.
The state of Nuevo Leon, always at
the forefront in this and other sectors, has
consolidated a higher than 30% growth in
annual sales according to the Civic Council for
the Interactive Media Cluster. The group informed
that out of the 250 existing enterprises known
in the state, a little over 150 companies had
become members in 2013. As to sales, several
hundred million Mexican pesos are reported
yearly along with a signicant increase in hiring,
from 700 to 1,700 jobs just in the last two years.
Most these companies carry on projects
such as the development of very low cost cloud
management applications for micro companies,
video games and, to a lesser degree, movies.

analistas econmicos como un enorme mar de

y molculas de los materiales, una valiosa

ende, maximizar sus ganancias.
Un estudio de la BBC revela que solo en el
2011, el mercado fue de $20.1 mil millones de
dlares; y estima que para el 2017 se alcanzarn
los $48.9 mdd.
Nuevo Len es la entidad lder en proyectos
de innovacin tecnolgica en el pas, al obtener
en los ltimos aos mayores presupuestos
para crear productos que han revolucionado
el mercado, segn inform la empresa
Nanomateriales, el 2013 cerr con ventas de $14
millones de dlares y se esperan duplicarlas para
el 2014.
Otro caso de xito es la empresa Lamosa,
que le apost a la utilizacin de Nanopartculas
antibacteriales para los sanitarios; o bien
nanotubos de carbono, que mejoran la resistencia
del aluminio y son utilizados por la empresa
Nemak en recubrimientos reectivos que son
aplicados en la industria automotriz.
Otras empresas que han invertido en la
nanotecnologa para darle un valor agregado
a sus productos son Metalsa, Stay Clean, Key
Qumica y Lubricantes de Amrica, que han
aportado una enorme lista de innovaciones
desarrolladas por el Centro de Investigacin
en Materiales Avanzados y la Incubadora de
Nanotecnologa, localizadas en el Parque de
Investigacin e Innovacin (PIIT), y por start-ups
regias como Nanomateriales. De los trabajos
realizados en estos espacios de investigacin se
han concretado exitosamente tres patentes.

principales receptores: ciudades como Monterrey recibieron una cantidad
importante de pacientes, quienes en promedio gastaban $10,000 dlares
cada uno.
El Clster de Servicios Mdicos Especializados Monterrey ha impulsado
desde su creacin la realizacin de proyectos innovadores, avances
tecnolgicos, premios a la calidad, certicaciones y acreditaciones a nivel
nacional y mundial. Estos permiten prestar el servicio a los hospitales de
la localidad bajo la vigilancia de profesionales altamente especializados y
experimentados en su rama.

UNO DE LOS CLSTERS MS JVENES en el
estado de Nuevo Len es el Clster de Transporte
y Logstica que fue creado este 2014 con el n
de promover el desarrollo de este rubro a travs
del trabajo conjunto de empresas interesadas,
academias y gobierno.
Bajo el nombre de Consejo Ciudadano para el
Impulso de la Industria del Transporte o Clster
de Transporte y Logstica de Nuevo Len, el
organismo busca desarrollar nuevos procesos
que hagan ms ecientes a las cadenas de
trabajo bajo un mismo objetivo: estar a la altura

e internacional del transporte y posicionar a la

URBANO SUSTENTABLE en Nuevo Len muestra

Four legal steps to invest in Mexico and its states
EN MXICO, LA INVERSIN EXTRANJERA est
regulada por la Ley de Inversin Extranjera y,
por disposiciones legales, se deben regir bajo el
Reglamento de la Ley de Inversin Extranjera y
del Registro Nacional de Inversiones Extranjeras.
A continuacin los pasos para los extranjeros
interesados en realizar inversiones en Mxico y el
estado de Nuevo Len.
Paso 1
VISA
Todo aquel extranjero que se interna en territorio
nacional con el objetivo de conocer diferentes
alternativas de inversin, o bien, realizar
transacciones directas o supervisadas, requiere
de una visa para realizar actividades de negocio
en Mxico. Se incluyen a los representantes de
empresas extranjeras que de igual forma realicen
transacciones comerciales.
Autoridad responsable: Instituto Nacional de
Migracin. Secretara de Gobernacin bajo la Ley
General de Poblacin y su Reglamento.
Paso 2
REGULACIN Y REGISTRO DE LA INVERSIN
EXTRANJERA
La Ley de Inversin Extranjera establece que la
inversin extranjera podr participar en cualquier
proporcin en el capital social de sociedades
mexicanas, adquirir activos jos, ingresar a
nuevos campos de actividad econmica o
fabricar nuevas lneas de productos, abrir y
operar establecimientos, y ampliar o relocalizar
los ya existentes, salvo por las excepciones
mencionadas en dicha ley.
Autoridad responsable: Direccin General
de Inversin Extranjera (DGIE). Secretara de
Economa.
Para la constitucin de sociedades, se
requiere permiso de la Secretara de Relaciones
Exteriores.
La apertura de nuevos negocios involucra
a las tres rdenes de gobierno; federal, estatal
y municipal. Por lo que resulta indispensable
coordinar acciones para agilizar y reducir al
mnimo los trmites correspondientes.

Para nes scales, son extranjeros las personas
fsicas (individuos) o personas morales (sociedades
mercantiles, asociaciones o sociedades civiles,
entre otras) que se rigen por la legislacin de

But it is the competitive advantages that we
have today, and that we most likely will have in

Although it is a fact that Mexico is attractive
for companies because of its low labor cost
manufacturing environment, it is also true that
manufacturing is the employment of choice for
the middle and lower economic classes in Mexico.

Nuevo Leon achieves a new record in foreign investment (FDI)
AL CIERRE DEL 2013, Nuevo Len sent un
precedente en captacin de inversin extranjera
al cerrar el ao con $3 mil 500 millones de
dlares, 31% ms que los $2 mil 750 del 2012,
lo que de acuerdo a datos de la Secretara de
Desarrollo Econmico, el estado rompi su propio
rcord en materia de inversin extranjera directa
con un incremento del 78.81%.
Los nmeros que los especialistas en
la materia pronostican sern superados
ampliamente, de hecho, ya super la inversin
recaudada en el mismo periodo del ao pasado.
En el transcurso de este ao se han
obtenido percepciones por encima de los mil 200
mdd, un 182% ms que los $425 mdd obtenidos
durante el mismo tiempo del ao anterior. El
monto corresponde a seis nuevas inversiones de
empresas del sector automotriz, manufactura
avanzada y energa.
Uno de los sectores que en el 2013 present un
importante auge en el estado, fue el de servicios
como transporte y logstica, informacin de
medios masivos, nancieros y de seguros,
profesionales, cientcos, tcnicos, de apoyo a
negocios, corporativos, manejo de desechos, y
de salud. Los giros del sector de servicios que la
Secretara de Desarrollo Econmico determin,
mantuvieron un crecimiento muy por encima de
los estndares establecidos anteriormente.
Adems de esto, Nuevo Len se mantiene
lder en la industria de la construccin y
en ms de 20 ramas manufactureras como
recubrimientos metlicos, aire acondicionado,
refrigeracin industrial, autopartes, fundicin de
metales, metales forjados y troquelados, entre
otros.

AT THE CLOSE OF 2013, Nuevo Leon set the
pace for capturing foreign investments with
USD $3.5 billion, a 31% increase from USD $2.75
billion in 2012 which, according to data provided
by the Ministry of Economic Development,
meant breaking its own record in foreign direct
investment with a 78.81% increase from the
same area.
Experts predict this amount will grow in
2014. Investments captured at the start of the
year have already surpassed amounts for the
same time in 2013.
Income from the beginning of the year to
mid-2014 has already topped USD $1.2 billion,
a 182% increase from the USD $425 million
obtained during the same period last year.
This amount comes from six new investments
in companies from the automotive, advanced
manufacturing, and energy sectors.

Industries that gave an important boost
to the state in 2013 were services such as
transport and logistics, mass media information,
nancial and insurance services, professional,
scientic, and technical services, support
services for businesses and corporations, waste
management, and healthcare. The Ministry of
Economic Development said these niches in the
service sector experienced faster growth than
previous standards, which were only higher in the
Valley of Mexico area.
Aside from these growing industries, Nuevo
Leon is still a leader in the construction industry
and in more than 20 manufacturing activities,
including metal linings, air conditioning,
industrial cooling, auto parts, foundry, wrought
and die cut metals.

BULKMATIC
Compaa norteamericana con ms de 18 aos
operando en el municipio de Salinas Victoria,
Nuevo Len. Dedicada a la prestacin de servicios
logsticos, actualmente vive un proceso de
expansin que incluye la integracin de una
nueva planta a los terrenos de Interpuerto
Monterrey. Este ao invertir medio milln de
dlares y proyectan sumar entre 5 y 6 millones
ms a este proyecto, el cual esperan concluya
en un periodo de dos aos. En octubre del
2013 inauguraron una terminal en el municipio
de Garca, en la que se invirtieron $5 mmd. De
acuerdo con su portal, Bulkmatic es la compaa
ms grande en su tipo en Estados Unidos.
DEACERO
Es otra acerera que tambin le est apostando
a la generacin de su propia energa a travs del
proyecto Planta Termoelctrica Deacero Power,
el cual contar con una inversin de $100 mdd
de entrada. Se calcula que tendr una capacidad
de 92 megawatts en su primera etapa y 117
megawatts en la segunda. La construccin del
complejo energtico inici en Junio 2013 y se
espera arranque operaciones para enero del 2016.
FONROCHE
La compaa francesa estableci un convenio para
la construccin del primer parque fotovoltaico
en Nuevo Len, para lo cual realizarn una
inversin inicial de $65 millones de dlares, de un
total de $130 millones. El parque estar ubicado
en el municipio de Galeana, al pie de la carretera
Saltillo-Matehuala, en una zona que cumple con
las caractersticas para la construccin de este
tipo de proyectos, los cuales requieren lugares
con alto nivel de radiacin solar y temperatura
ambiente.
BULKMATIC
This American company was a pioneer in Salinas
Victoria, Nuevo Leon. It started operations in the
township over 18 years ago. The company is still
growing with a new plant on the Interpuerto
Monterrey premises. Bulkmatic is a provider of
logistic services and freight in processes such as
train to road cargo transfer. In 2014, Bulkmatic
will invest half a million USD and plans on
adding an additional $5 - $6 million over the
next few years. In October 2013, a terminal was
inaugurated in Garcia, where USD $5 million were
invested. According to their website, Bulkmatic
is the largest company of its kind in the United
States.
DEACERO
This highly successful company is betting high
on generating its own electricity with the Planta
Termoelctrica Deacero Power (Thermoelectric
Deacero Power Plant) project with an initial
investment of USD $100 million. Its capacity
is estimated in 92 megawatts for the rst
stage and 117 megawatts for the second. The
construction of the energy complex was started
in June 2013 and operations are expected to start
in January 2016.
FONROCHE
The French company signed an agreement to
build the rst photovoltaic park in Nuevo Leon
with an initial investment of USD $65 million
to eventually total USD $130 million. The park
will be in Galeana, near Saltillo-Matehuala
road. The area is well-equipped for this type of
construction project, where high levels of sun
radiation and temperature are required.

IBERDROLA
La central elctrica inici operaciones en
Nuevo Len en el 2002. Es una compaa lder
mundial en energa elica cuyas operaciones se
concentran en el Reino Unido, Estados Unidos,
Brasil, Espaa y Mxico. Este ltimo es uno de los
favorecidos, pues la compaa espaola invertir
mil 200 millones de dlares en la construccin
y ampliacin de dos plantas de ciclo combinado
en el municipio de Pesquera, Nuevo Len. La
central actualmente oferta 530 megawatts
de capacidad energtica a la CFE a travs de la
modalidad productor independiente. La capacidad
elctrica adicional anunciada se vender a
privados bajo el esquema de autoabastecimiento,
segn el permiso otorgado por el regulador el
ao pasado. Las dos turbinas adicionales, una de
gas y otra de vapor, generarn energa para su
venta a empresas locales.
KATCON GLOBAL
El fabricante de catalizadores electrnicos,
con operaciones en ocho pases, inaugur este
ao una nueva planta enfocada al mercado de
vehculos pesados para el mercado nacional y
de exportacin en la que se invirtieron $20 mdd.
El complejo industrial se encuentra ubicado en
Santa Catarina y est enfocado a la manufactura
de nuevas lneas de sistemas de escape para
vehculos pesados, como tractores agrcolas y
equipo de construccin, entre otros productos.
MANITOWOC FOODSERVICE
Empresa norteamericana dedicada a la
fabricacin de mquinas de hielo y refrigeracin,
reconocida por sus operaciones a nivel mundial.
Con una inversin de $40 millones de dlares, la
nueva planta fue instalada en Guadalupe, Nuevo
Len. La factora dar empleo a ms de 110
trabajadores y su producto nal ser distribuido
principalmente en la industria restaurantera.
MONDELZ INTERNATIONAL
A mediados del 2013, la empresa global de
alimentos inform a la comunidad que invertira
ms de $600 mmd para la construccin y
operacin de una planta de 51 hectreas
dentro del Interpuerto Monterrey, con lo que
se convertirn en la productora de galletas
ms grande del mundo. En dicho complejo se
producirn galletas de marcas como Oreo y Chips
Ahoy, mismas que se vendern en el continente
americano. Mondelz International, una de
las compaas ms grandes de botanas en el
mundo, inici operaciones en octubre del 2012 en
Nuevo Len, luego de la escisin del negocio de
abarrotes en Norteamrica de Kraft Foods.
NELSON GLOBAL PRODUCTS
Empresa estadounidense con sede en Wisconsin,
que surge hace 75 aos, es actualmente lder
global en diseo y fabricacin de transmisin
acstica y tubular, y de productos estructurales
relacionados con la seguridad para los mercados
de vehculos comerciales y recreativos. Este 2014
abrirn una nueva planta en el municipio de
Garca, Nuevo Len, cuya inversin ser de $3.5
millones de dlares. Sus operaciones ocuparn
una nave de casi 17 mil metros cuadrados donde
producirn tuberas con forjado de precisin e
invenciones estructurales de lminas metlicas,
junto con caos de escape, silenciadores y
componentes de los sistemas de emisiones. Se
prev que de entrada tengan una planta laboral
de 250 empleados.
Fonroche: $65 mdd destinados a la construccin

Ternium: planta generadora de electricidad que

IBERDROLA
The power plant company began operations in
Nuevo Leon in 2002. It is a world leader in wind
energy with operations in the United Kingdom,
U.S., Brazil, Spain, and Mexico. One of Iberdrolas
top priorities is Mexico, where the Spanish
corporation announced their intention to invest
USD $1.2 billion in 2014. From that total sum,
USD $305 million will be spent on building
and expanding two combined cycle plants in
Pesqueria, Nuevo Leon. The Pesqueria power plant
today produces a capacity of 530 megawatts
as an independent producer. Additional electric
capability will be sold privately under the self-
supply chain. Permits for this were obtained in
2013. The two additional turbines, a gas turbine
and a steam turbine, will generate electricity to
be sold to local companies.
KATCON GLOBAL
An e-catalyst manufacturer operating in eight
countries, Katcon inaugurated a new plant
focused on heavy vehicles for both the domestic
and international markets, investing USD $20
million for 2014. This industrial complex is located
in Santa Catarina. The new plant will focus on
manufacturing new lines of exhaust systems
for heavy vehicles, including farm tractors and
building equipment.
MANITOWOC FOODSERVICE
An American company dedicated to
manufacturing of ice machines and refrigeration,
known for its worldwide operations. With an
initial investment of $40 million dollars, the
company just broke ground on a new plant in
Guadalupe, Nuevo Leon, which will employ more
than 110 workers with their nal products set to
be distributed in the restaurant industry.
MONDELZ INTERNATIONAL
In mid 2013, this global food corporation
informed the community of its plans to invest
more than USD $600 million to build and operate
a 126.02 acre plant inside Interpuerto Monterrey,
making them the largest cookie producer in
the world. In this complex, cookie trademarks
such as Oreo and Chips Ahoy will be produced
to be sold throughout the continent. Mondelz
International, one of the biggest snack producers
in the world, started operations in Nuevo Leon
on October 2012, after breaking away from Kraft
Foods.
NELSON GLOBAL PRODUCTS
This American company is headquartered in
Wisconsin. It began 75 years ago and today it is
a global leader in the design and manufacture
of sound and tubular transmission, as well as
structural products related to safety for the
commercial and recreational vehicles. In 2014,
it will open a new plant in Garcia, Nuevo Leon,
with a USD $3.5 million investment. Operations
will be carried on in a little over 4 acre industrial
unit where precision forging tubes and metal
sheet structural components, as well as exhaust
tubes, mufers, and emission system parts will
be produced. Estimates are the plant will have
250 employees as it begins operations.
Fonroche: USD $65 million to build a photovoltaic
park in Galeana.
Ternium: an electricity power plant will be jointly
built in the same area with subsidiaries Tenaris
and Tecpetrol, both of them in the Techint group,
with a USD $1 billion investment.

NEXT ENERGY
Con inversin de $160 mdd, nacional e
internacional, arranca el proyecto de energa
elica Santa Catarina II, que ya est en
construccin y tendr una capacidad para
generar de 70 a 80 megawatts de energa.
Esta empresa es pionera en la utilizacin de
la energa que proveen los fuertes vientos que
azotan la regin. Sus principales clientes son
la mayora de los municipios metropolitanos de
Monterrey, pero su objetivo es ofertar el servicio
a la industria local.
Adems, tienen en anteproyecto construir
otra planta elica en Mina, Nuevo Len, en la que
tienen previsto invertir $400 mdd.
TECHINT
Controladora de las siderrgicas Ternium Mxico
y Tenaris Tamsa, est por iniciar la construccin
de una termoelctrica de ciclo combinado en
Pesquera, la cual ser alimentada con gas
natural y abastecer de energa a sus respectivas
plantas industriales en el estado.
Previo a estos proyectos, en febrero del 2013,
Ternium arranc en Monterrey un proyecto de
generacin de energa solar para la iluminacin
del patio logstico de su Planta Guerrero, ubicada
en San Nicols de los Garza.
TUBACERO
Con una inversin de 90 millones de dlares,
la manufacturera de acero inici la operacin
de su cuarta planta en Mxico, ubicada en el
Interpuerto Monterrey. Se trata de la nica fbrica
en el mundo capaz de producir tubera de acero
helicoidal (en espiral) a partir de placa en rollo
de hasta 96 pulgadas de ancho, lo que permite
ahorrar costos en la aplicacin de soldadura y
alcanzar longitudes de hasta 24 metros. Se
produce, adems, tubera con dimetros de
100 o hasta 144 pulgadas, (utilizados en la
conduccin de agua). Actualmente laboran en
ella 92 trabajadores, de un total de 450 que se
integrarn cuanto est a su plena capacidad.El
da de hoy, Tubacero tiene una produccin cerca
de 180,000 toneladas anuales de tubera de
acero.
NEXT ENERGY
This Santa Catalina II wind power project
is starting with both domestic and foreign
investments. It is being built with a USD $160
million investment and it will be able to produce
70-80 megawatts. This company is a pioneer in
using the energy provided by the strong winds
that blow in this area. Their main customers
are most Monterrey metropolitan townships,
but their goal is ofering the service to local
industries.
They also have a preliminary plan to build an
additional wind power plant in Mina, Nuevo Leon,
where they plan to invest USD $400 million.
TECHINT
This company controls the Ternium Mexico and
Tenaris Tamsa steelworks. They are to start
construction on a combined cycle thermoelectric
plant in Pesqueria. This plant will feed on natural
gas and supply power to industrial plants in the
state by the beginning of the third quarter in
2016 with a billion dollar investment.
In February 2013, Ternium began a solar
power project in Monterrey to light up its
Guerrero Plant in San Nicolas de los Garza.
TUBACERO
With an initial USD $90 million investment, this
steel manufacturer began work on its fourth
plant in Mexico, located in Interpuerto Monterrey.
It is the only factory in the world able to produce
helical (spiral) steel tubes from roll plates up to
96 wide, reaching lengths of up to 78 feet and
saving costs in welding. It also produces ducts up
to 100, or even 144, in diameter (used in driving
water). Today, it employs 92 people, however the
projected workforce is 450 when the plant is
operating at full capacity. Currently, Tubacero is
producing about 180,000 tons of steel tubes a
year.

Parque Fundidora
El Parque Fundidora es Museo de Sitio dedicado al
esparcimiento y recreacin de toda la familia. Est
ubicado en el lugar que ocup durante ochenta
y seis aos la primera empresa siderrgica de
Latino Amrica: la Compaa Fundidora de Fierro y
Acero de Monterrey. El 4 de noviembre de 1988 se
estableci el Parque Fundidora como un espacio
de preservacin ecolgica, recreativo, cultural,
deportivo y de fomento econmico.
El parque-museo est conformado por 114
hectreas aproximadamente en las que
se encuentran edicios antiguos, jardines,
andadores, plazas, lagos, reas infantiles y
nuevos desarrollos para actividades culturales,
recreativas, de negocios y deportivas.
Centro de las Artes
Espacio cultural localizado en una nave industrial
restaurada, que fue construida en 1901 y que
funcionaba como taller de fundicin o vaciados.
La nave alberga a la Cineteca y la Pinacoteca
Nuevo Len que cuenta con dos salas de cine
con capacidad para 168 personas, sala de video,
biblioteca, tienda de regalos y libros. Adems,
exhibe exposiciones fotogrcas.

the steel mill closed, Parque Fundidora opened
in late 1988 as an enviromental preserve,
along with entertainment, cultural, sports and

The Park-Museums extension of
approximately 280 acres allows visitors to
discover old foundry buildings, gardens, pass
ways, squares, lakes, kids playgrounds and
new developments for cultural, enterteinment,

Center of the Arts
This former XIX century steel mill now hosts a

ms alto de carne en todo el pas y es famoso
por sus restaurantes donde el comensal podr
encontrar los ms nos cortes de carne al
carbn.
Algunos de sus platillos han trascendido
fronteras, como la carne seca de origen indgena,
que mezclada con huevo dio nacimiento al
deleite culinario ms emblemtico de la regin
para el desayuno: el machacado con huevo.
Otro platillo mestizo muy tpico y buscado
por los visitantes, tanto nacionales como
internacionales, es el cabrito al pastor. Adems,
al igual que los machitos de origen espaol o
los frijoles con veneno, pasando por el delicioso
asado de puerco, las agujas y el corte de res
nico de la regin, la arrachera.
En la gastronoma local tambin
encontramos carne zaraza de Montemorelos,
papitas de Galeana, las famosas glorias de

A TANTALIZING VARIETY OF DISHES are found
in Nuevo Leons regional cuisine. Because of
Northern Mexicos strong cattle breeding
industry, the meats of this region are mouth-
wateringly delicious and readily available. Nuevo
Leon is the main consumer of meat in the
country and is famous for restaurants where
diners can select the nest cuts of beef for the
simple but succulent preparation of charcoal-
style grilling.
Some of Northern Mexicos most beloved
dishes have become popular in other areas of
the world. One of the most treasured begins with
marinated and dried indigenous meat mixed with
eggs, producing one of the most iconic breakfast
dishes in the region: machacado con huevo.
A traditional dish that is enjoyed by both
domestic and foreign visitors is the cabrito al
pastor, or shepherd-style kid goat. The entrails
of the goat are prepared sausage style for a dish
inspired by Spain, called machitos. Frijoles con
veneno is mashed and fried beans topped with
asado de puerco (pork roast) which is famous in
its own right. Nuevo Leon is also known for its
roasted, grilled meats. Carne asada or agujas are
avorful cuts of beef including the arrachera or
ank steak.

Other regional specialties include the carne
zaraza or tenderloin strips served with
guacamole, from Montemorelos; and papitas
from Galeana, tiny and intensely avorful
potatoes roasted in the oven. On the sweet side,
glorias from Linares, which are sweets made of
burnt milk caramel and can include pecans; or
Bustamante bread, which is sweet baked bread
from a Tlaxcaltecan Indian recipe. Each one of
these truly unique treats is named after the city
they come from.

Garca Caves, these caverns were
discovered in 1843 and are more
than 60 million years old. Theyre
located at an altitude of 3,300 feet
above sea level and can be reached
by an old rail car traveling over
2,460 feet of uneven land on a steep
slope. After this trecherous journey,
visitors are rewarded with a tour of
the inside of the cavern covering 1.9
miles, with an impressive sample of
stalactites and stalagmites. It also
has a swimming pool, bungaloos
and shaded areas with barbecue
grills, making the perfect site for
a picnic.

The mountains that surround the

LA PRINCIPAL FORTALEZA DEL ESTADO DE
NUEVO LEN es su gente, por lo que el impulso
a las actividades que realizan da a da es
fundamental para que contine siendo punta
de lanza en el ejercicio de las reas acadmicas,
cientcas, culturales y por supuesto, del deporte.
Disciplinas en la que jvenes neoleoneses han
tenido destacadas participaciones incluyen los
clavados, el ciclismo, remo, natacin atletismo,
taekwondo y tiro con arco. En este, Mariana
Avitia fue protagonista en el medallero de las
Olimpiadas en Londres 2012, donde se alz como
la tercera mejor en el mundo.
En el mundo del ftbol, la entidad destaca
por tener dos equipos profesionales. Se considera
como la mejor acin de Mxico el seguidora
de los Tigres de la UANL y de los Rayados del
Monterrey, los cuales tienen hinchas igual de
aguerridas que paralizan la ciudad cuando se
enfrentan en el clsico rayado.
La Raza de Monterrey es otro equipo de
ftbol, pero en este caso, del denominado ftbol
rpido donde integrantes de la Major Indoor
Soccer League de Estados Unidos paso a paso se
han ido ganando a la acin.
Orgullosamente regios, los Sultanes de
Monterrey son el equipo de la liga profesional
de bisbol, quienes aceleran los corazones de su
ferviente acin en cada juego y por supuesto, en
las incontables nales que se han disputado en
el estado.
Fuerza Regia representa dignamente a
la entidad en la Liga Nacional de Baloncesto,
mientras que en el ftbol americano a nivel
colegial, dos equipos con gran arraigo y
responsables de inmobilizar la urbe cuando se
enfrentan en el clsico universitario son los
Autnticos Tigres de la UANL y los Borregos del
Tecnolgico de Monterrey
Otro de los deportes que ha ganado terreno
es el golf. El estado cuenta con ocho campos
para su prctica, seis de ellos estn ubicados
dentro de la zona metropolitana de Monterrey,
uno ms en Santiago y otro en Allende.
Existe en Nuevo Len un Centro de Alto
Rendimiento que alberga 18 instalaciones y
atiende cerca de 70 mil personas que practican 25
deportes en sus campos. Adems, se encuentra
en construccin un Centro Acutico que incluir
una fosa de clavados y una alberca olmpica; se
cree estar listo para el 2015.

into their daily activities is essential to keeping
the state a front-runner in academic, scientic,
cultural, and sporting arenas. Nuevo Leon youths
have shown outstanding performance in many
sports, including Olympic diving, cycling, rowing,
swimming, track, taekwondo, and archery. In fact,
Mariana Avitia just won the bronze medal for
archery at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
When it comes to soccer, the most popular
sport of the country, there are two professional
teams in the state, Tigres de la UANL and
Rayados de Monterrey. They equally have erce
fans and the city is literally paralyzed when the
two meet in the eld.
The Raza of Monterrey is an indoor soccer team
with the American Major Indoor Soccer League.
Slowly, but surely they are winning over fans
and claiming a place of honor in this extremely
popular sport. The same goes for Fuerza Regia,
the states team in the basketball national
league.
The Sultanes of Monterrey proudly
represent the city in the professional baseball
league. Energy goes sky high for their passionate
fans, making every game electric, especially for
any one of the many nal games played here in
Nuevo Leon.
And when it comes to football (college),
the city grinds to a hault in excitement over
the game, these fans also experience paralyzing
pandemonium while cheering for city rivals,
Autenticos Tigres of UANL and Borregos of
Tecnologico de Monterrey (ITESM).
Golf is also gaining popularity in the area.
Eight painstakingly manicured golf courses are
situated in Nuevo Leon: six are in the Monterrey
metropolitan area, another in Santiago, and the
last one in Allende.
Nuevo Leon also boasts a High Performance
Center with 18 diferent facilities serving
approximately 70,000 people in 25 diferent
sports. An Aquatic Center is also under works.
The diving pool and Olympic swimming pools are
expected to be completed by 2015.

y nanzas. La Sultana del Norte es una zona
geogrca ampliamente conocida por su larga
cadena montaosa parte de la Sierra Madre
Oriental, as como por extensas llanuras y
desiertos plenos de agreste belleza y una gran
biodiversidad de importantes especies de ora
y fauna, que pasan por varios programas de
conservacin y en 29 reas Naturales Protegidas
que tienen una extensin de casi el 2.46 % del
territorio.
Las primeras reas naturales protegidas
estatales fueron creadas en el 2000, con el n de
proteger diversos ecosistemas representativos
del estado. El Sistema Estatal de reas
Naturales Protegidas se logr con el decreto de
tres nuevas reas en la pasada dcada:
El Cerro del Obispado, en el 2005
El Parque Lineal Ro Santa Catarina, en el
2008
El Parque Ecolgico La Pastora, en el
2009
Otras reas naturales que estn protegidas son
el Parque Nacional Cumbres de Monterrey, el cual
cuenta con una extensin de 880 hectreas, y La
Estanzuela, donde el visitante podr disfrutar en
familia o con amigos de sus caones, arroyos y
reas verdes.
La ora de la regin incluye pastos,
matorrales, agaves y cactceas en las regiones
bajas y pino y encino en las montaas. La fauna
comprende de loros, osos negros, zorrillos,
coyotes, venados de cola blanca, perritos de la
pradera, murcilagos y otras especies pequeas
como las ardillas.
Mencin especial merece el oso negro
que habita principalmente en los cerros de la
zona metropolitana y baja a las zonas urbanas
en bsqueda de alimento y agua por las altas
temperaturas que se registran en los meses
de junio, julio y agosto; motivo por el cual, las
autoridades han implementado programas de
convivencia entre plantgrados y poblacin para
evitar incidentes.

commerce and nance. The Sultana of the
Norths geographical area is famous for its long
mountain range, a part of the Sierra Madre
Oriental, as well as for its huge plains and
deserts plentiful in wild beauty. The biodiversity
of the area, along with important ora and
fauna species (some of them endemic) are
preserved in various conservation programs and
in 29 Protected Natural Areas covering almost
2.46% of the territory.
The rst state protected natural areas were
created in 2000, with the goal of safeguarding
various historic ecosystems in the state. The
State System of Protected Natural Areas was
achieved when three new areas were named in
the last decade:
Cerro del Obispado, in 2005
Santa Catarina River Linear Park, in 2008
La Pastora Environmental Park, in 2009
Another protected natural area is Cumbres de
Monterrey National Park, where visitors can
enjoy canyons, creeks and green areas on a
2,174.53 acre surface. The Estanzuela Park is one
of the most visited parks in Monterrey because
of its proximity to the metropolitan area.
Flora in the region includes pasture, bushes,
agaves and cactacea in the lowlands, as well as
pine trees and live oaks in the mountains. Fauna
includes parrots, black bears, skunks, coyotes,
white-tailed deer, prairie dogs, bats, and other
small species such as squirrels.
Black bears deserve a special mention
as they mostly inhabit the hills above the
metropolitan area and they are known to
come down from their habitat to the urban
areas in the months of June, July and August, in
search of food and water because of the high
temperatures in the region. That is the reason
why authorities have implemented programs for
the coexistence of bears and humans in order to
avoid accidents.
