recibía normalmente era: “Es que esta gente trabaja con pesas”, pero no
decían ni cómo, ni cuánto, ni por qué. De esta manera aparecía una especie de
conflicto combinado entre un señor bigotudo en traje de baño levantando a una
mano halteras de bolas, la advertencia de “ni las toques o te quedarás enano, a
un primo mío le pasó...” y Larry Nance haciendo unos mates del copón...

1. INTRODUCCIÓN
Sin embargo, también es cierto que una percepción mal entendida de esta
realidad ha provocado que algunos preparadores físicos o técnicos diseñaran
el entrenamiento de la fuerza mediante la aplicación exclusiva de cargas
específicas, sin tener en cuenta el grado de especificidad con que los
entrenadores ya diseñaban sus entrenamientos. Es por esta razón por la que
no sólo se ha de analizar los requerimientos de fuerza que tiene un
determinado deporte de equipo sino también de qué manera los cubre el
cuerpo técnico al cual, mientras no se demuestre lo contrario, estamos
subordinados. No olvidemos que cuanto más específica sea una carga de
entrenamiento más agresividad supondrá para el sistema músculo-esquelético
y por lo tanto aumentará el riesgo de que los jugadores sufran una lesión.
Como ejemplo podemos citar estudios que han estimado que por cada 1000
horas de práctica de fútbol o balonmano se producen hasta 50 lesiones
(Rahnama, Reilly y Lees, 2002; Wedderkopp et al, 1997, 1999). Además, la
incidencia de lesiones en competición es 3 veces mayor que en los
entrenamientos en fútbol (Lewin, 1989, McGregor y Rae, 1995, Hawkins et al,
2001) y entre 13 y 20 veces en balonmano (Wedderkopp et al, 1997, 1999). Por
el contrario, la incidencia de lesiones por una carga inespecífica como puede

ser levantar pesas es muy baja en comparación con muchas otras actividades
deportivas como puede observarse en la tabla 1 de Hamill (1994).

“En los juegos de pelota resulta más complejo emplear los indicadores
físicos de intensidad de la carga que los fisiológicos. Esto se debe al carácter
variable de los ejercicios en estos deportes, y a la considerable variabilidad
tanto de la intensidad de la carga (la cual resulta muy difícil de medir
directamente), como también de la magnitud de las reacciones de respuesta
del organismo (las cuales, en general, son más fáciles de medir). Por eso, para
evaluar la intensidad aquí se emplean con mayor frecuencia los indicadores
fisiológicos y bioquímicos, en particular, la FCC”.

AMPLIACIÓN DE INFORMACIÓN
Parece ser que Voigt y Klausen (1990) son los primeros en encontrar que
un entrenamiento intenso de fuerza máxima mejora la velocidad de un
movimiento sin sobrecarga pero sólo si es combinado con un entrenamiento
específico de dicho movimiento. Aparece un concepto empleado en la literatura

Son varios los estudios que han encontrado que un entrenamiento de fuerza
cuando es combinado con un entrenamiento específico de lanzamientos
produce mayores aumentos en la velocidad de lanzamiento que si sólo se
realiza un entrenamiento específico del deporte (Hoff y Almasbakk, 1995;
Lachowetz et al, 1998; Gorostiaga et al, 1999). No obstante, se trataba de
jugadores con cierta experiencia pero no de élite.

Otra pregunta que muchos lectores se habrán realizado es: ¿cuál era el
momento más idóneo para realizar los ejercicios de transferencia? Hace
unos años se realizó un estudio al respecto en el INEF de Barcelona y se
encontró que las mejoras fueron mayores en el grupo que realizó los ejercicios
de transferencia al final de la sesión de entrenamiento que en el que los realizó
después de cada bloque de ejercicios (López et al., 1996). Brown et al (1986)
también encontraron mejoras después de realizar durante 12 semanas (34
sesiones) 3 series de 10 reps de drop jumps (desde 45 cm) al finalizar los
entrenamientos en baloncesto de high school (15 ± años). Desafortunadamente
este estudio no investigó la influencia de la situación temporal de estos
ejercicios aunque sí encontró que el grupo de entrenamiento mejoró
significativamente más su salto vertical que el grupo que sólo entrenó
baloncesto.

Las fuerzas que tienen lugar en los cambios de dirección son de una
magnitud considerable. Por ejemplo, en jugadores NBA se han detectado
fuerzas de componente vertical de más de 3 veces el peso corporal.

Por otro lado, un golpeo del balón a alta velocidad puede equivaler a una
fuerza aplicada de 2000N (unos 200 kgs) con una sola pierna (Luhtanen,
1994). Sin embargo, el estudio de Tsaousidis y Zatsiorsky (1996) encontró en
futbolistas amateur unas fuerzas de cómo máximo 1189 N; Tol et al (2002)
registraron 1025N.
Otro tipo de chut es el que golpea el balón con el interior (figura 21), donde
lógicamente las velocidades son menores. Se trata de un gesto empleado en
los pases a corta o media distancia o en los penaltis. En el Mundial de Francia
de 1998, 16 de 17 penaltis se realizaron con este gesto (Grant et al, 1998). El
jugador, en comparación con el chut normal, orienta la pelvis, la pierna y el pie
más hacia fuera introduciendo una velocidad de componente medial, sin
embargo la mayoría de velocidad del pie es originada por la extensión de la
rodilla (Levanon y Dapena, 1998). Sin embargo, en un estudio posterior,
Nunome et al (2002) encontraron que el movimiento de rotación externa de
cadera si que contribuía de forma considerable a la velocidad de la parte
medial del pie. Las diferencias pueden deberse a la ejecución técnica ya que
las velocidades alcanzadas fueron similares (23,5 m/s y 22,5 m/s)

En sujetos con que hayan sufrido lesiones graves de rodilla (rotura LCA) es
conveniente cambiar la técnica de ejecución de los saltos. En lugar de parar
bruscamente en la batida con la rodilla en hiperextensión y lejos de la
prolongación de las caderas, el jugador debería frenar su aproximación a la
batida mediante pequeños y rápidos pasos con las rodillas ligeramente
flexionadas. En las caídas (aterrizaje) después de un salto, es importante

Por otro lado, Hewett et al (1996) encontró una reducción significativa de las
fuerzas soportadas durante el aterrizaje posterior a un salto después de realizar
un entrenamiento que incluía ejercicios pliométricos. Estos resultados
adquieren una especial importancia después de que Dufek y Bates (1991)
reportaran una relación entre las lesiones de rodillas y el soportar altas fuerzas
de impacto en los aterrizajes.
Otro gesto que implica saltos es el golpeo de cabeza en el fútbol. Este gesto
ha adquirido mucha importancia en los últimos años debido al riesgo que
suponen para el jugador a nivel neurológico (ver excelente revisión de
Kirkendall, 2001)

Parece que esta acción se da una media de 6-7 veces en los partidos (Reilly
y Thomas, 1976). Se ha sugerido que la mayoría de cabeceos ocurren ante
velocidades de balón inferiores a los 65 km/h, lo que implicaría un impacto de
10 ms de un fuerza entre 850 y 921 N y una aceleración de 30 a 55G. Como
comparación se puede citar el fútbol americano (impactos de 200-350 ms y
150-450G) o el boxeo (impactos de 14-18 ms a 6000N y 100G). Cuanto mayor
sea la fuerza y menor el tiempo de impacto mayor riesgo potencial de lesión.
Se ha estimado que la fuerza necesaria para que se produzca una concusión
es de 27 N/s mientras que las expuestas anteriormente como ejemplo para el
fútbol se encuentran entre 12,4 y 13,7 N/s (Kirkendall et al, 2001).

Estos resultados fueron constatados en los siguientes años por otros autores
(Newton et al, 1999).
Baker (1996) propone tres grupos de ejercicios para la mejora del salto,
agrupados según su especificidad, definiéndolos así:

Este autor propone emplear estos ejercicios como continuum de forma que
puedan ser combinados o incluir una mayor proporción de unos u otros. No
obstante, si se trabajan de manera aislada también llega a la conclusión de que
los ejercicios que implican trabajar en la zona de potencia máxima son los que
más permiten mejorar el salto vertical.

Por otro lado, Hoffman (2003) encontró en fútbol americano que dos
sesiones lograban mantener (miembro superior) e incluso aumentar (miembro
inferior) la fuerza al terminar la temporada. Este es el primer estudio en
observar mejoras en jugadores con una previa experiencia en el entrenamiento
de fuerza. Lo habitual es que como mucho se mantengan los niveles (Groves y
Gayle, 1993; Baker, 2001). Sin embargo, en este estudio se encontró con que
sobre todo la intensidad del entrenamiento era la variable que más influía en
los cambios de fuerza. Además, lógicamente los jugadores con menos
experiencia en el trabajo de fuerza tienen un potencial de mejora superior,

En baloncesto, Janeira (1998) encontró que las primeras partes eran más
demandantes en cuanto a saltos y cambios de dirección. Lo mismo ocurría en
cuanto a la distancia recorrida por los jugadores y finalmente en parámetros
fisiológicos como la frecuencia cardiaca o la concentración de lactato.
Probablemente esto se explica por un menor rendimiento físico de los
jugadores a causa de la fatiga acumulada. Resultados parecidos han sido
encontrados por numerosos autores en el fútbol (Reilly y Thomas, 1976;
Ekblom, 1986; Van Gool, 1988; Bangsbo et al, 1991, 1994; O’Donoghue et al,
2001). Este hecho, que pone en cuestión una óptima preparación física de los
jugadores, podría estar relacionado con el desproporcionado número de goles
que se marcan en los últimos 15 minutos de un partido de fútbol. Además, un
estudio epidemiológico reciente en la Premier League inglesa ha encontrado
que la mayoría de lesiones ocurrían al principio de temporada o en el tercio
final de los partidos, lo que permitía presuponer una relación entre lesión y la
falta de un adecuado trabajo preventivo desde un punto de vista muscular y
articular (Woods et al., 2003). Estos resultado parecen venir refrendados por un
estudio recién publicado en el número de noviembre de 2003 de la revista
Journal of Sports Sciences por el grupo de Thomas Reilly. Los autores
realizaron un ejercicio en el cual se simuló el ritmo de trabajo de un partido de
fútbol. Se realizaron mediciones completas de fuerza en los cuádriceps e
isquiotibiales antes, en el supuesto intermedio y al final. Se encontró un
progresiva pérdida de fuerza que afecta a distintas características funcionales
relacionadas con las demandas del fútbol (Rahnama et al, 2003). No olvidemos
que cuanto mayor es la fatiga menos energía será capaz de absorber el
músculo antes de llegar al grado de estiramiento que produce su lesión (Mair et
al., 1996).

lineal parece tener, por los datos presentados, un mayor nivel de entrenamiento
inicial ya que pesa 4 kgs de media más y tiene un nivel medio de 1RM de 83,41
kgs (press banca) y 266,82 kgs (sentadilla) con respecto a 66,59 kgs y 230,23
kgs en el grupo que siguió la periodización ondulatoria. Este hecho puede
afectar a los resultados ya que aunque su nivel medio de experiencia era
similar (5,4 vs. 5,0 años), pueden estar más cerca de su máximo potencial y
por lo tanto menos susceptibles a mejoras.

Por otro lado, Tidow considera que una pérdida de una 10% de velocidad
en un entrenamiento de fuerza explosiva en la élite es inaceptable ya que sólo
una pérdida de un 5% de velocidad en un lanzamiento de peso implica pasar

Sin embargo, es conocido el estudio de Rooney et al. (1994), quienes
encontraron que la realización de un programa de entrenamiento de 6 semanas
con una intensidad de 6 RM, sin descanso entre las repeticiones, provocaba
unas ganancias de fuerza mayores que cuando en el programa se tomaban 30
segundos de descanso entre cada repetición. Por lo tanto, si el objetivo es el
aumento de la masa muscular se debería potenciar la fatiga muscular no
descansando entre repeticiones.

Sistema endocrino
Uno de los estudios que más sorpresa ha causado en los últimos años es el
de Bosco et al (2000) indicando la respuesta hormonal como posible causa de
las mejoras tan espectaculares en cuanto a fuerza explosiva encontradas en la
mayoría de estudios. Estos autores encontraron un aumento de la GH de más
de un 400% con respecto a los niveles basales. Además la concentración de
testosterona aumentó significativamente y la de cortisol disminuyó, por lo que
se establece un entorno idóneo para el anabolismo, al aumentar la relación
T/C. Sin embargo, los citados grandes aumentos en la concentración de GH se
producen de manera similar o superior después de realizar un trabajo intenso

musculares dinámicas tradicionales (Tous y González de Suso, datos sin publicar, 2002).

muscular en la fase excéntrica. Esto provocó que los tres sujetos estudiados
padeciesen síntomas intensos de DOMS durante los 3-4 días posteriores al
ejercicio, consistente en sólo 3 series de 10 repeticiones.
En los últimos años se han realizado dos estudios que emplearon diferentes
modelos para reproducir la ingravidez y falta de movilidad a la que se ven
sometidos los astronautas en las estaciones orbitales. Este grupo de trabajos
es lo que constituye la tesis doctoral de Björn Alkner defendida en octubre de
2005 (Alkner, 2005). Un estudio se realizó en Rusia e incluyó 110 días de
confinamiento en una habitación y el otro en Toulouse e incluyó 90 días de
encamamiento. En el primer estudio los resultados mostraron que los niveles
de fuerza se mantuvieron al realizar 6 ejercicios diferentes en la máquina yo-yo
(ver figura 50) con un volumen de 4x10 reps (2-3 veces por semana) al 80%-
100% (Alkner et al, 2003). En el segundo estudio se encontró que la pérdida de
masa muscular de los diferentes grupos musculares era prevenida (extensores
rodilla) o atenuada (extensores plantares) en el grupo de entrenamiento con
respecto al grupo que no realizó entrenamiento (Alkner and Tesch, 2004a,b).
Además, se encontró que la pérdida de masa ósea fue atenuada en la misma
medida que un grupo que recibió medicación específica para evitar la pérdida
de masa ósea (Pamidronato) (Rittweger et al, 2005)
Por último, el estudio que más nos interesa para los deportes de equipo es el
de Carl Askling et al (2003) quienes encontraron una disminución de un 70% en
el número de lesiones isquiotibiales en futbolistas de élite suecos. Además, los
jugadores mejoraron su velocidad en 30 m.
