BRENDA’S DAILY ROUTINE

My name is Brenda, and I consider myself a very active and busy woman. Having a

regular schedule is important because you learn how to make better use of your time.

Let me tell you about a typical weekday for me: I ______________________________ at

wake up

6: 00 a.m. in the morning and take a shower right away. Before leaving for work, I drink
some coffee and ____________________________________________ at
eat my breakfast

everyday. I teach at a community college. At ________________________________
8.00 a.m. in
the morning I usually walk to school, and I do office work until 1:00 p.m. Then, I take a
break, and I ____________________________________________.
watch my computer I usually teach a class at
4:00 p.m., and I finish at 6:00 p.m. After this, I go home and relax.

In the evening, I often __________________________________

read a book at about 6:30 p.m. I
love sports because they are a great way to relax after a busy day, so I ________________
go to run

up at the gym at 8:30, and we __________________________________________________
go to out

___________. When I get home, I usually ________________________________

take a shower at about
9:00 p.m. and then I ____________________________________.
go to sleep I am always in bed by
10:00 p.m. I seldom stay up late because I like to rest well for another busy day.

Having a regular schedule is not always easy because you have to be very self
disciplined to keep up, but when you manage to organize your time, you can surely
have free time to enjoy doing fun acitvities with family and friends.

Adapted from: Gateway to English from Uceda English series

Grammar Task: Frequency Adverbs use.

1. Circle the frequency adverbs you find in Brenda’s description of her daily routine
and discuss with your teacher and classmates how they are used in the sentences
with To Be and other verbs.
How about you? What are some things in your routine that you:

a. usually do b. often do c. seldom do d. never do

What is in a paragraph?
Review and discuss these basic rules for writing a paragraph about your own daily
routine:

• A paragraph is composed of a series of sentences that are organized and coherent,

and are all related to a single topic. Take a look at Brenda’s paragraph. What is her topic?

• A paragraph is introduced by a main idea (Topic Sentence,) which states what

the paragraph is all about. Is there a Topic Sentence in Brenda’s paragraph?

• Some important components of a paragraph are Coherence and Unity. Coherence refers to
the relationships that are established between the sentences in the paragraph. These are
determined by the use of connectors or linking words: and, so, but, because and others. Take
a look at this expample taken from Brenda’s composition:

“ Having a regular schedule is important because you learn how to make better use of your time.”
sentence 1 sentence 2

The word is a connector that establishes a relationship of cause and effect between both
sentences. What other connectors can you identify in the paragraph? What relationships
between sentences are established by using them?
8

Unity in a paragraph means that the entire paragraph should focus on one single idea. This
makes the paragraph cohesive, which is an important characteristic in writing. Take a look
at Brenda’s paragraph. Does it focus on one single idea? Which one?

WHILE: Write about your own routine

2. Write a paragraph about your own routine(s). You can choose from one of the three options
below:

a. Describe what you do on your busiest day of the week.

b. Write about your weekly routine. How do activities vary each day?

c. Write about your weekend and talk about how you spend it.

Remember to include some of the connectors you have studied in class, punctuation and
capitalization. Give your paragraph a creative title that reflects its content.
