THEMATIC UNIT: PERSONAL MATTERS
THEMATIC CONTENT: A DAY IN MY LIFE
Task: A host family will welcome you, so they have requested you to make
a short video introducing yourself with basic personal information and a
brief description of your regular activities in order to get to know you better.
GOALS:
• To share schedules for making plans to study with a classmate.
• To write about and share one’s own daily routines.
Context: You are going to apply to an exchange program in an English speaking country. A
host family has requested you a short video introducing yourself in order to get to know you
better.
LANGUAGE FOCUS
Greetings and Farewells: How are you? How do you do? Have a good night.
The alphabet: How do you spell your name? How do you spell your last name?
Numbers (1-100): What’s your phone number? What’s your address?

Months: When is your birthday? When is Colombia’s independence?
Days of the Week: Class is on Monday. I rest on Saturdays.
Countries: Where are you from? What country would you like to visit?
Expressions of Time (early, on time, o’clock, at night, in the afternoon,in a rush...): I arrive on time
to the English class. I have science class at night.
Frequency Adverbs: On Sunday, I usually go to the university at 8:00 o’clock, I visit my parents on
vacations.
Sequence Connectors: First, later, then, after, before, finally.
Basic Action Verbs: Study, Work, Eat, Go.
Verb to Be: I am a student, She is my professor.
Simple Present Tense (affirmative, interrogative and negative): I usually work on weekends. I do not
sleep at home on Fridays, What do you like to do on weekends? How often do you go to the library?
Family Members: How many brothers do you have? What is your father´s name?
Colors What is your favorite color? Do you prefer red or green?
Family Types: Do you have step-siblings? What does you father-in-law do?

A. Get together with a classmate and use the schedule above to figure out what
time you can meet to study English during the week. Some of the statements
below might help you with this activity.

it? Discuss your answers and share them with your teacher and classmates. Besides this, talk
about how easy or difficult it was for both of you to make this decision taking into account the
differences in your schedules.

ACTION TWO: Write a note about your own routine and share it with the
class.
1. This is Brenda’s daily routine. Look at the pictures and discuss what she
usually does at the different times shown in the clocks. Then, read the
paragraph on the next page and fill in the information with the missing
actions.
My name is Brenda, and I consider myself a very active and busy woman. Having a
regular schedule is important because you learn how to make better use of your time.

Having a regular schedule is not always easy because you have to be very self
disciplined to keep up, but when you manage to organize your time, you can surely
have free time to enjoy doing fun acitvities with family and friends.
1. Circle the frequency adverbs you find in Brenda’s description of her daily routine
and discuss with your teacher and classmates how they are used in the sentences
with To Be and other verbs.

• Some important components of a paragraph are Coherence and Unity. Coherence refers to
the relationships that are established between the sentences in the paragraph. These are
determined by the use of connectors or linking words: and, so, but, because and others. Take
a look at this expample taken from Brenda’s composition:

The word is a connector that establishes a relationship of cause and effect between both
sentences. What other connectors can you identify in the paragraph? What relationships
between sentences are established by using them?

Unity in a paragraph means that the entire paragraph should focus on one single idea. This
makes the paragraph cohesive, which is an important characteristic in writing. Take a look
at Brenda’s paragraph. Does it focus on one single idea? Which one?
2. Write a paragraph about your own routine(s). You can choose from one of the three options
below:

c. Write about your weekend and talk about how you spend it.
Remember to include some of the connectors you have studied in class, punctuation and
capitalization. Give your paragraph a creative title that reflects its content.
Read aloud the paragraph you wrote. Can you find any similarities or differences between
your own schedule and some of your classmates’?
