SABER vs. CONOCER vs. PODER

Saber, conocer and poder may lead to confusion as in English we only use
“to know” and the modal verb “can”.

CONOCER:
● Conocer algo o a alguien means that you have had an experience with the
thing or person you are referring to.
● Se puede conocer: un libro, una película, un lugar, a una persona.
● We use the preposition a when the direct object is a person.
➢ E.g. Yo conozco un sitio por aquí donde ponen unas tapas buenísimas.
➢ ¿Conoces a Fernando? Es un chico muy simpático.

SABER:
● Saber is used to talk about abilities, like nadar, dibujar, hablar un idioma…
➢ E ¿Sabes hablar chino?
● Saber is also used to talk about the knowledge that you have about some specific information.
➢ E.g. ¿Sabes que María se ha casado? / ¿Sabes quién viene esta tarde?

PODER:
● Poder is used to refer to the possibility of doing something.
➢ E.g. Yo sé tocar el piano, pero hoy no puedo tocar porque me duele mucho la cabeza.
● Poder is also used with a verb in infinitive to ask for permission or give orders.
➢ ¿Puedo sentarme aquí?

SABER / CONOCER:
● Sometimes saber and conocer can be used in the same contexts:
➢ E.g. Conozco / Sé las dificultades de este trabajo.
➢ Hoy las noticias se conocen / se saben al momento en cualquier parte del mundo.
➢ Ramón conoce / sabe su oficio.
➢ ¿Conoces / Sabes la teoría de la relatividad?
