Ponga fibra de relleno en el cactus.

Coser la flor en la parte superior del cactus; es posible que desee colocar una pequeña joya en el centro
de la flor.

aguja a través de la cadena externa.
Poner el relleno u el sombrero amarillo y cerrar el orificio inferior de la misma
manera que la parte superior.
Coser el sombrero amarillo sobre cactus superior.

Cactus haken - Trend alert! De cactus is helemaal hot en een musthave voor in je hippe interieur.
Van de prikkelige, kleurloze beauty moet je houden, dus wij komen met dit tedere alternatief.
Zacht, knuffelbaar en kleurrijk zijn deze gehaakte cactusjes, en je hoeft alleen maar het patroon te
volgen!
Schattige, kleine cactusjes zijn op het moment helemaal de trend! Om daar gewoon lekker in mee te
gaan haken we deze knuffelbare jongens. Het zijn vier verschillende patronen dus variëren kan volop.
Ook voor diegene zonder groene vingers zijn deze plantjes ideaal!
Voor de juiste 'cactuskleuren' gebruikten we verschillende soorten garens. De groentinten van de
Cabotine en Thalassa van Phildar doen het goed voor deze desert plant, maar ook de Cotton Aran heeft
mooie, geschikte tinten. Natuurlijk werken we de cactusjes af met vrolijke bloemetjes van Phil Coton 3.

Materials
 All instructions are applicable for any worsted weight yarn. You will need much less than 1 skein of yarn in
several colours – this pattern is a great way to use up scraps of yarn! You will need one or more shade of
green, brown for the soil, and any suitable colour for the pot and flowers.
 For my cacti, I used Bernat Satin and Red Heart Soft yarns.
 Suggested hook size (see Gauge, below): E US/3.5mm
Size
Approximate measurements (including pot): individual cacti 3" (8cm) wide by 4.5-6.5" (11-16cm) tall; cactus
garden 5.5" (14cm) wide by 6.5" (16cm) tall. (Your gauge and yarn choice will affect the finished size slightly.)
Gauge
Gauge is unimportant for this pattern, provided the pieces are crocheted sufficiently tightly that they will not
gape visibly when stuffed. To test a swatch, crochet the first 3 rounds and then push a piece of fibrefill behind it:
 If the stitches stretch open too much and the fibrefill is clearly visible, reduce the hook size.
 If you cannot insert the hook into the previous stitches, reduce your tension (crochet more loosely) or
increase the hook size.

Colour code
A Cactus Green yarn (to give more visual interest, you can use a different shade of green for each cactus,

Create your own Cactus Garden

This pattern includes instructions for 4 different cacti, a small individual pot, and a large pot so that you
can create a cactus garden – a collection of cacti all planted together.
Any one of the cacti will fit into the small pot, or you can mix and match your favourite types to fill the
larger pot. You can customize the collection by including several of one type of cactus and omitting
others – or mix and match with the cacti and succulents in the Cactus Collection 1 and Succulent
Collections 1 & 2 patterns (sold separately).

work so you can crochet through both edges at once to form a tube (Figure 5.2). Through both loops of the
front layer and through the BL of the back layer (Figure 5.3), sc in each stitch across.
Cut yarn, leaving a very long (approx 18”) end of yarn, and draw the cut end through the last loop on the hook.

Finishing
You should have formed a long tube. Turn the tube inside out (Figure 5.4). You’ll find that the seam is totally
invisible from this side – the unworked loops from Row 12 create a ridge that exactly matches the other ridges
around the cactus!
Thread the long yarn end onto a yarn needle, and weave through all the loops around the top opening of the
cactus (Figure 5.5). Draw the yarn tight so that the top hole is pulled closed (Figures 5.6 and 5.7). Insert the
needle so that the yarn passes through the inside of the cactus to the bottom, and through the bottom edge of
one of the stitches at the bottom of the cactus from inside to outside. Stuff the cactus through the hole, and
lose the starting tail of yarn inside the cactus, leaving the remainder of the long yarn end free.

Finishing
Flatten the cactus (Figure 6.1) and begin to brush it with a wire pet brush to generate fluff on the surface. Take
care not to catch your hand with the brush! Brush with a reasonable amount of force – if you are too gentle you
won’t generate any fluff. It will probably take around 10-20 strokes over each area of the piece for the fluff to
come up.
Holding one end of the cactus in your hand, brush the other end of the cactus, up to the middle (Figure 6.2),
then turn it around to brush the other end. Flip it over and brush both ends of the other side, then unflatten
and reflatten the cactus so that a different part of the cactus lies at the edges, and brush both sides again, to
even out any unbrushed patches from the previous edge areas.
Continue brushing until you reach the desired level of fluffiness.

Stuff the cactus firmly. A Detail Stuffing Tool (www.planetjune.com/tool) is perfect for this, but if you don’t
have one, try using an implement that is the same width as the inside of the stalk (e.g. try the wrong end of a
pencil or wooden spoon) to force the fibrefill inside, a little at a time.
If the stuffing isn’t even, smooth it out by rolling the piece between your hands until it is straight and the same
width all the way along.
If the cactus fluff looks squashed after stuffing, re-fluff it with the wire brush.

Ribs
When the cactus is upright, the unworked front loops from each round (which look like small horizontal bars)
form 6 vertical stripes around the cactus. Each of these will be used as the base to form a rib:
1. Starting from the top of the cactus, choose a rib and insert your hook into the first unworked loop
(Figure 7.1).
2. Draw up a loop of A (Figure 7.2).
3. Insert your hook into the next unworked loop (Figure 7.3), yarn over and draw up a loop, draw through
loop on hook to form a sl st.
4. Repeat step 3, forming a sl st in each loop down the cactus body (Figure 7.4).
5. At the bottom, sl st into both loops of the edge stitch.
6. Cut yarn leaving a 4” tail, and draw cut end through final loop to fasten off.

Finishing
Push the 6 yarn ends from the bottom of the ribs inside the cactus, then stuff the cactus through the hole. The
stuffing should trap the ends in place inside the cactus to save you having to weave them in!
Thread the starting yarn tail from the top of one rib onto the yarn needle. Insert the needle next to the first rib
stitch and draw it through the cactus to the bottom, to lose the yarn inside the cactus. Repeat for the remaining
yarn ends at the tops of the other ribs.
To finish the cactus, we’ll create a circle of flower buds around the top.
With a yarn needle and yarn B, pass the yarn up through the cactus, starting at the stuffing at the bottom
opening and coming up one stitch away from the centre of the cactus top. To create a flower bud, make a
French knot with the yarn (Figure 7.5).
Note: Don’t worry if your French knots aren’t tight or perfectly executed – they’ll just look like larger buds!

Insert the needle into the same hole, and pass the yarn through to the next hole, taking care not to pull the bud
down into the cactus. Create another French knot bud at this position (Figure 7.6). Repeat until you have
formed a circle of 6 buds (Figure 7.7).

Flatten all 4 cactus pieces, then stuff them lightly, so each piece is puffy but still looks flat (Figure 8.1).

Hold the large piece upright, and position the medium piece on top, at an angle, and with the flat edge of both
pieces facing the same direction (Figure 8.2). The exact angle doesn’t matter, so just choose an angle that looks
good to you! Using a yarn needle and the long yarn end from the medium piece, stitch the two pieces together,
all around the open edge of the medium piece.
Position one of the small pieces on top of the medium piece so that it sits vertically, i.e. at an angle to the
medium piece (Figure 8.3). Using a yarn needle and the long yarn end from the small piece, stitch the two
pieces together, all around the open edge of the small piece.
Position the second small piece on top of the large piece, so that it sits next to the medium piece (Figure 8.4).
To make the cactus look more realistic, you can rotate the piece slightly so that one side is further forward than
the other – real cacti aren’t perfectly flat! Using a yarn needle and the long yarn end from the small piece, stitch
the two pieces together, all around the open edge of the small piece.

Option for a flat base
At this stage, you may add a piece of plastic or cardboard to keep the base of the shallow pot flat. Pause to
do this now, as it must be positioned in the base of the pot before you crochet the soil to the pot. To
add a stabilizing base insert:
1. Measure the diameter of the inside of the base of the pot.
2. Find a stiff material e.g. plastic canvas, a flat piece cut from a plastic carton or lid, or cardboard (you
may need 2 layers of cardboard to give it enough rigidity).
3. Cut a circle of your plastic/cardboard, with the diameter you just measured. It doesn’t have to be
exact! If it's slightly too small, that's fine. If it's slightly too large, trim it until it will sit flat against the
bottom of the pot.

Tips to make the perfect pot

Tip 1: The decreases of Rnd 20 are designed to keep the lip of the pot from curling out (Figure 4), but
you’ll have to form it into shape first: smooth around the edge of the lip with your thumbs and
forefingers so that the top of the lip points up and very slightly inwards (Figure 5) – you’ll find that
it will hold this shape once you’ve formed it.

Tip 2: If you find that your stuffing has made the soil bulge upwards excessively, you can squash it
down before you attach your cacti. Find an object that’s slightly smaller in diameter than your
crocheted pot (a can of tomatoes would work well) and place it on top of the soil. Leave in place
overnight – the stuffing will have compressed by morning!

Attaching Cacti to Pots

Individual Cactus (Small Pot)
Flip down the lip of the pot to give you easy access to the soil (Figure 6). Position your cactus at the centre of
the soil, so that the ‘front’ of the cactus (the prettiest side) points in the same direction as the neatest side of
your pot. Using a yarn needle and the long yarn end from the cactus, stitch the base of the cactus to the soil, all
around the open end of the cactus.
Don’t forget to flip the lip of the pot up again (Figure 7), to complete the piece!

Cactus Garden (Large Pot)

The large pot is sized to fit one of each of the 4 cacti in this collection (or you can mix and match with the cacti
in Cactus Collection 1 and/or the succulents in Succulent Collections 1 & 2). If you’d like to create a unique cactus
garden, you can squeeze 1 or 2 additional cacti into the pot, or reduce it to only 3 cacti (it would look sparse
with less than 3).
Arrange all your cacti on the soil before you start to stitch them down, positioning them so that the ‘front’ of
each cactus (the prettiest side) faces the same direction as the neatest side of your pot.
When you have an arrangement you like, you might want to make a note or quick sketch of the position of each
cactus, so you don’t forget later. Remove all the cacti except one, and use a yarn needle and the long yarn end
from the cactus to stitch the base of the cactus to the soil, all around the open ends of the cactus.
Repeat for each cactus until they are all stitched into place.
Enjoy your cacti – they’re guaranteed never to prick you!
