Since pre-Hispanic times, Mexico has been distinguished by presenting a


great variety of ecosystems rich in fauna and vegetation, the food of ancient
pre-Hispanic Mexico was based on corn, and its diet at that time was based
on plants. They clearly also consumed various types of beans, chia and
sunflower, tomato, chayote, jicama, pineapple, roots, and tropical fruits. In
addition, they domesticated fruits and vegetables such as avocado, custard
apple, passion fruit, zucchini, carrots, and yams. Chili peppers were also
important, not only because they were used to flavor their food, but because
some varieties of chili peppers have been found to be rich in vitamin A and
C. Rabbits, hares, deer and quail, which were obtained by fishing and
hunting, but they also domesticated animals for their consumption, such as
chickens and even dogs, the latter were consumed only on special festivities.
