que para ellos no podía ser más que una construcción lingüís
tica. Los defensores del movimiento que se autodefinía como
el "Nuevo Historicismo"37 se ocupaban más directamente de la
literatura y la cultura en un contexto histórico, específicamen
te el de la Inglaterra Isabelina,38 vista a través de sus produccio
nes literarias, como también del encuentro entre Europa y las
culturas nativas del Nuevo Mundo.39 Ambos grupos compar
tían los supuestos fundamentales de la teoría literaria posmo-
derna acerca de la centralidad y opacidad del lenguaje, como
también las concepciones antropológicas de las culturas como
redes simbólicas de significado. No obstante, los "Nuevos His-
toricistas" rechazaron la noción de la autonomía de los textos,
para verlos más bien como parte de complejas negociaciones
simbólicas que reflejaban relaciones de poder entendidas en
términos parcialmente foucaultianos y parcialmente marxistas.
Los textos que formaban las bases de sus análisis contenían la
misma dialéctica cultural de la sociedad en su conjunto, en la
que operaban las fuerzas capitalistas de mercado a partir del
período moderno temprano. Para ellos, como para el sociólogo
Pierre Bourdieu, tales fuerzas adoptaban la forma de un capi
tal simbólico culturalmente negociable, y no material. Enfati
zando los significados múltiples de todos los textos literarios y
culturales, continuaron criticando las prácticas de la "historia

Hay por lo tanto una diferencia entre una teoría que nie
ga la existencia de la realidad en los relatos históricos y una
historiografía que es completamente consciente de la com
plejidad del conocimiento en el campo de la historia, aunque
sin por ello dejar de asumir que gente real del pasado tuvo
pensamientos y sentimientos reales que condujeron a acciones
reales que, dentro de ciertos límites, pueden ser conocidas y re
construidas. Quizás es cierto que, como lo ha expresado Patrick
Bahners, la ciencia desde Kant en adelante no ha poseído "cri
terios materiales de verdad".71 Pero Kant y el pensamiento cien
tífico y científico-social posterior, incluyendo a Max Weber, han
asumido que existe una lógica de la indagación científica que
puede ser comunicada y que, aun cuando no ofrezca criterios
materiales, sí ofrece estándares materiales para el examen del
mundo natural y humano. Sin embargo, incluso estos criterios
han sido cuestionados por algunos teóricos contemporáneos
de la ciencia.
Entre los teóricos modernos y contemporáneos de la ciencia
que han desafiado la noción de que la investigación científi
ca conduce a una comprensión progresiva de la realidad, es
necesario distinguir entre los escépticos más radicales como
Gastón Bachelard72 y Paul Feyerabend,73 por una parte, y los
relativistas históricos como Thomas Kuhn, por otra. Bachelard
y Feyerabend entienden la ciencia como una actividad poética
para la que no hay una lógica o método de indagación consis
tente. En su La estructura de las revoluciones científicas (1960),74
Kuhn argumentó que la ciencia no puede entenderse como el

inglés el año 1997 bajo el título Historiography in the Twentieth
Century. From Scientific Objectivity to the Postmodern Challenge.
Ha sido traducida a varios idiomas, incluyendo el chino, el co
reano, el japonés, el polaco, el checo, el griego, el turco y el is
landés. La primera edición en castellano fue publicada en 1995
(Barcelona, Editorial Labor). La edición y nueva traducción que
se publica ahora, con revisiones del autor, representa la última
versión a nivel internacional de este clásico de la historiografía.
Este libro tiene todas las virtudes que uno relaciona con Georg
Iggers -lucidez, distancia, equilibrio y la capacidad de revelar la
conexión entre las grandes tendencias historiográficasy su con
texto político y cultural más amplio.
