Aconitum napellus poisoning, also known as aconite, wolvesbane, devil's horn, etc., is a
highly poisonous plant that contains alkaloids such as aconitine that are toxic to humans
and other animals, and can cause serious health problems if ingested or handled without
taking the necessary precautions, poisoning by this plant is a medical emergency that
can cause serious symptoms, even death, if the poisoned person is not treated
immediately. For this reason, it is important to publicize the identification of Aconitum
napellus to avoid consumption or accidental contact, inform about the most common
symptoms for rapid medical intervention.
In this work, an exclusively bibliographical review on the toxicity of monkshood has
been carried out, for which books, scientific articles, online books have been consulted
through the resources available in databases such as Pubmed, Scopus, CRAI of the UB,
etc., since the toxicity of Aconitum napellus has been known for centuries.
The results showed that the aconitine from Aconitum napellus exerts a strong cardiac
toxicity, neurotoxicity and liver toxicity that are supported by clinical studies and
therefore its toxicity of the plant restricts possibilities of use in clinical practice, but
currently it is used only in homeopathic preparations. Their poisonings are usually due
to lack of knowledge of the plant or it occurs accidentally.
