In Spain and in most Latin American countries, each person has two surnames. The first is
from the father and the second from the mother. For example, a person is named Carmen
López Alonso, López is his father's first surname, and Alonso is his mother's first surname.
Married women keep their surnames, they do not change them to the husband's surname.
In social and professional life, we generally, use the first surname, but if it is a very common
surname (for example, López) we can use the second surname (for example, Alonso). We
also use both surnames in the documents: national identity document DNI, passport,
driver's license, etc.
The five most frequent surnames in Spain are: García, González, Fernández, Rodríguez
and López. García is the surname of a million half spanish people.
