The Speaking exam will take place in school with your class teacher, but will be
assessed by an external examiner. It makes up 25% of the GCSE.

The Foundation tier lasts 7 – 9 minutes, plus 12 minutes preparation time.

The Higher tier lasts 10 – 12 minutes, plus 12 minutes preparation time.

Task 1 – a role play based on one topic that is allocated by the exam board
(based on Themes 1 – 4)
Task 2 – questions based on a picture stimulus based on one topic that is
allocated by the exam board.
Task 3 – conversation based on two themes. The first theme is based on the
topic chosen by the candidate in advance. The second theme is allocated by
the exam board.

Assessment criteria for the Fountation tier

Role play – Foundation tier (10 marks)


For this task, students’ work is marked by Pearson using the following assessment criteria.
The mark grid is applied once to each individual response to the prompts. There is a
maximum of 2 marks for each of the five prompts on the role play cards.
