Números ordinales y cardinales

Existen dos tipos de números:

 
Los números cardinales
1 (one), 2 (two) etc.
(Utilizados principalmente para contar)
 
Los números ordinales
1st (first), 2nd (second) etc.
(Utilizados principalmente para ordenar cosas en secuencias)
 
Números cardinales
Los números cardinales generalmente se utilizan para:
 
Contar:
I have two brothers.
Tengo dos hermanos.
 
Decir la edad:
I am thirty-three years old.
Tengo treinta y tres años.
 
Dar un número de teléfono:
Our phone number is two-six-three, three-eight-four-seven. (263-3847)
Nuestro número de teléfono es 263-3847.
 
Números ordinales
Los números ordinales se forman añadiendo -TH al final de un número cardinal.
Los números ordinales generalmente se utilizan para:

Decir una fecha:

My birthday is on the 27th of January. (Twenty-seventh of January)
Mi cumpleaños es el 27 de enero.
 
Ordenar cosas en una secuencia:
Liverpool came second in the football league last year.
Liverpool terminó segundo en la liga de fútbol el año pasado.
 
Indicar el número de un piso en un edificio:
His office is on the tenth floor.
Su oficina está en el décimo piso.
Referirse a siglos:
Shakespeare was born in the 16th century.
Shakespeare nació en el siglo XVIème.

2nd second 12th twelfth 100th one hundredth

3rd third 13th thirteenth 511th five hundred and eleventh

4th fourth 14th fourteenth

5th fifth 15th fifteenth

6th sixth 16th sixteenth

7th seventh 17th seventeenth

8th eighth 18th eighteenth

9th ninth 19th nineteenth

10th tenth 20th twentieth

En inglés, los años se leen como dos números separados:
1750 : seventeen fifty
Diecisiete cincuenta
 
El primer año de cada siglo se pronuncia así:
1400 : fourteen hundred
Catorce cien
 
Los primeros nueve años de un siglo se pronuncian así:
1401 : fourteen oh one
Catorce cero uno
 
Se puede hablar de una década de la siguiente manera:
1940-1949 : The ‘40s : ‘the forties’
